Suitcase locked with everything inside

Not really an AIBU but am in dire straits (relatively speaking) and hoping someone can help...

Have come away for a few nights with toddler. DH lovingly shut and locked out suitcase ready to go, before realising that he didn't actually know the code.

We had to run and catch the train so left with a locked suitcase, thinking that we'd be able to figure out the code later.

999 tries on the combination lock later and no joy, so now we're stuck in a hotel room with no clothes and, worse, no books or cuddly toys to help toddler sleep.

It's a Delsey suitcase with a 3-digit combination lock and a button with a space for a key.

Please please can anyone help?

@Clymene

I'd just break the bloody thing. I can't believe you're going to spend a morning of your holiday doing an hour's round trip without having brushed your teeth or changed your knickers. With a toddler!
Totally.

Or, send your bloody husband out as he was the one who locked the thing in the first place!!

twominutesmore · 14/02/2022 08:26

Good luck, op, let us know how you get on!

TabithaTittlemouse · 14/02/2022 08:35

I love that your Dh lovingly shut the suitcase. How do you do that? Kiss it?

ChittyBangs · 14/02/2022 08:41

I wouldn't even waste your time.
Break it open

My guess is that it was his only contribution to the packing and OP's expected to be grateful for it Grin
RoRoYoYo · 14/02/2022 09:00

Hope you sort it soon OP. I can't believe how many people are having to Google how many combinations there could be!

PyongyangKipperbang · 14/02/2022 09:09

Work out the cost per hour of your break, multiply that by the amount of time you have spent/will spend trying to get into the case and compare that the to cost of a new cheap case. Then take off the time it took you to work that out.....

I am confident that it will work out cheaper to get a new case.

TabithaTittlemouse · 14/02/2022 09:14

@girlmom21 Grin probably!

NatashaBedwouldbenice · 14/02/2022 09:16

So op would rather go without and travel 30mins somewhere and then 30mins back all not to bust open the suitcase?

Yes, plus spend an evening and a morning without toiletries, medication or fresh clothes.

PyongyangKipperbang · 14/02/2022 09:24

I am trying to square up why busting into the case is "such a waste" but spending hours of an expensive break farting about with combinations and hair grips isnt.....

barofsoap · 14/02/2022 09:27

break into the case - get amazon or argos to deliver a new one for when you go home

whynotwhatknot · 14/02/2022 11:08

FFs just break it open its now monday morning and you still havent got your toilettries or clothes but want to try and save a bloody case!

TeenTitan007 · 14/02/2022 11:29

We had this recently. Had to cut open the top with a knife. The. We got it stitched up so managed to save the suitcase.

toomuchlaundry · 14/02/2022 11:36

This reminds me of the safe threads, it will never be opened!

twominutesmore · 14/02/2022 13:00

Some people seem to be a bit cross that you're not taking their advice op. Hope you manage to get it open without ruining it.

Casheeeew · 14/02/2022 15:03

@LuckySnips

Is there 999? Doesn't it go 123 etc, 223, etc 323 etc

Wouldn't that be 1000s of combinations?

What 3-digit number do you think you can make that doesn't fall between 000 and 999 Grin ?!

Omg I get it now. What a total minter Blush
YankeeDad · 14/02/2022 15:42

The lock is TSA coded. That’s the US airport security organisation and it means that there are master keys that allow them to inspect locked luggage contents and re-close the luggage.

Most airports probably have those keys, and if you are lucky then maybe the luggage shops have them too. If you are even luckier then maybe the hotel concierge will have those keys.

Good luck!

TatianaBis · 14/02/2022 15:45

I’d already have pieced the zip and ordered a new one on Amazon Prime by now.

Wasteful to me spending hours of your holiday fannying around over suitcase.

Suitcasefuckup · 14/02/2022 16:20

The guy at the Samsonite shop opened it in about a minute. I didn't see very closely but he was looking down the side of the dials so I think he might have been looking for dents in the wheel bits.

Given that the cheapest Samsonite is about £150 I'm glad I took half an hour to get to the shop to get it open. Was wonderful to get all our stuff back!

Thanks to everyone for their advice Smile

Horray!

Returnoftheowl · 14/02/2022 16:26

Great news! Glad you've got it open!

Jellybean23 · 14/02/2022 16:54

Put a note of the combination on your phone - can't face going through this again!

TatianaBis · 14/02/2022 17:15

Which shows how effective those combination locks are!

speakout · 14/02/2022 17:25

The guy at the Samsonite shop opened it in about a minute.

He's in the wrong line of work! Wink

I locked myself out of my car a few months ago, the central locking activated itself with the keys in the ignition. Engine was off.
It took the RAC guy about 40 seconds to open one of the back doors via the window , no specialist tools. I was gobsmacked as I watched how easy it is to break into a locked car.

Wafflesnsniffles · 14/02/2022 17:38

Id go through all the numbers again............ from 000 to 999. Worth a try!
