I found the book brilliantly funny. I have worked in admin hospitals and primary care, so can relate re cut backs etc.

Anyone else enjoying this drama, if that’s the right word! True to life. Any doctors, nurses etc anyone?

Ccu nurse, loved it! Been a fan of Adam for years. Saw him live a few years ago, and my heart broke when he described the event that ended his medical career.

Glitterazzi · 12/02/2022 18:40

I was feeling ill so stayed in yesterday and ended up watching all 7 episodes in a row! I really enjoyed it. Heartbreaking in places. I read the book too.

iklboo · 12/02/2022 18:44

Really enjoying it. Ben Whishaw is so good.

MayThePawsBeWithYou · 12/02/2022 18:46

I really enjoyed binging it. The final scene perfectly sums up the frustration.

CailleachGranda · 12/02/2022 18:49

Anyone else enjoying this drama,

Loads of people on the thread in telly addicts.

Boood · 12/02/2022 18:56

Do doctors really speak to each other like that? I’ve known one person in my 25 year working life who made a habit of being that sarcastic and aggressive and he was constantly dodging warnings. It’s so far outside the norm in private companies it’s bizarre to watch.

MatildaTheCat · 12/02/2022 19:00

I worked in nhs midwifery for 25 years and was really uncomfortable with the lack of respect for the women and the undercurrents of nastiness. Some of the situations were utterly ludicrous. Yes, it has a kind of appeal and of course it highlights how doctors used to work insane hours but no, it wasn’t a workplace I recognised.

sillysmiles · 12/02/2022 19:10

Is it on Netflix or where are you watching???

iklboo · 12/02/2022 19:11

@sillysmiles - it's on iplayer

80sballetgirl · 12/02/2022 19:22

I’m still chuckling at “brats & twats” 😂😂

Leilala · 12/02/2022 19:22

@Boood

Unfortunately yes. But not as much anymore. Some individuals become notorious for it but it is usually more common in some specialties.

The mess really becomes a safe haven for juniors to be able to debrief and reflect.

You have to be able to fight your own corner and have the game to back it up.

However the majority of colleagues are lovely and dedicate a lot of time to educating juniors which even if not obvious, is very much appreciated.

drpet49 · 12/02/2022 19:24

I don’t like Ben Whishaw. Just find him so boring and drab

cansu · 12/02/2022 19:28

enjoyed it. I thought the book was much funnier and less depressing though.

SC215 · 12/02/2022 19:36

I've read the book, found him quite patronising and misogynistic. Funny in parts. But I cringed a lot too. I am a nurse and wouldn't like to work with him, or have him look after me as a patient. But I guess he does make the point that they don't properly screen medical students for empathy when applying to medical school.

I've only watched the first episode so far. The part when he is operating without the consultant made me feel sick, when the midwife says "I've already phoned him" when he asks her to, reminds me of all the cringey moments when I've had to question a junior doctor as a nurse. I would say it probably is realistic of hospitals back in 2006 or whenever it is meant to be, now a days hopefully things are different and the midwife would speak up louder and clearer before the shit hits the fan.

HappyDays40 · 12/02/2022 19:36

Have been an A and E OT, can't wait to watch.

SoupDragon · 12/02/2022 19:38

I watched the first episode and won't be watching any more. I found him completely unlikable and a nasty wanker.

SC215 · 12/02/2022 19:44

I also hated the part where he let the junior doctor with him do her first c section on that racist patient, who had just asked him if he would be doing the operation, and no one else, and he said yes. She might have been a racist twit, but she's still a patient, and has the right to consent to who is doing her operation. Him sewing up her dolphin tattoo wrongly was also disgusting. Being a healthcare professional is a privilege, and patients should be able to trust us, even if they've done things that make us feel angry, sad or sick inside etc.

DingleyDel · 12/02/2022 19:47

I’m really enjoying the drama, haven’t read the book. I’ve not worked in a hospital but I did have to laugh at the episode where the roof fell down as that actually happened when I was on the post natal ward of our local hospital. I have a few friends who have been junior doctors, sounds like hell. They’ve experienced really quite toxic work environments. And I’ve witnessed a consultant (surgeon) talk to a junior doc at our local A&E (the junior was simply being cautious with my dc) like they were a piece of shit on their shoe in front of the patient (me). Absolutely disgusted.

AAAAAGHH · 12/02/2022 19:50

This should be in Telly Adicts.
No interest in watching

modgepodge · 12/02/2022 19:58

I read the book a few years ago, my overall memory is that it was hilarious with a fair few poignant bits and a few upsetting bits, but mostly funny. Watched the first episode last night and found it overall depressing with little light relief, very different from my memory of the book (though probably more representative of the NHS and the situation he was in). I will carry on watching but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought i would.

blowupthehouseandmove · 12/02/2022 20:11

Obs here, bloody awful and won't be watching again!

the80sweregreat · 12/02/2022 20:14

To be honest, I'm surprised it was commissioned. The books are a lot easier to take in and a lot less abrasive , but they seem to have gone out of their way to make this show much more controversial, even if it was set in 06 etc and things are a bit different now ( so I'm told )
I guess I was lucky to have two normal deliveries and had fairly ok care in the 90s , but I know this isn't the same for every woman of course and things will go wrong as giving birth can be incredibly dangerous for so many.

purpleme12 · 12/02/2022 20:15

I started to watch it. Out of curiosity really after reading all the things said.
But I could see how he wasn't very nice from the few minutes and thought it wasn't worth it
I've read what everyone says about him and the book and it sounds horrible

the80sweregreat · 12/02/2022 20:20

I think people interested in this should try the books as they are much better than the tv version.

GoodyAlsop · 12/02/2022 20:20

It’s vile. He’s a foul misogynist and I’m very glad he is not practicing any more.
Episode 5 it looks like he’ll get his cummupance. I’m just disappointed that didn’t actually happen. Haven’t watched further than that yet.
Is this suppose to be entertainment? Seeing what junior doctors are expected to do? How actual women are treated? Or is this some weird government plan to put more nails in the NHS coffin?
