Will you self isolate if covid positive test?

Monopolyiscrap · 12/02/2022 00:47

Compulsory self-isolation is ending if you test positive with covid. Instead, people are being advised to choose to self-isolate.
In reality, I think many people will not. I would not get paid if I self-isolate but am well enough to work, so why would I forego a week's wages?

So will you self-isolate if you test positive with covid?

YABU - Yes I will self-isolate
YANBU - No I will not self-isolate

I wouldn't isolate but I would be careful..wear masks, avoid going into shops or just do in big shop with a mask and only touching what I was buying, wouldn't go to the gym, not hug and kiss my kids. But I would take my dog on walks, drive my kids to school. Unless I was symptomatic, in which case, I would isolate.

bonetiredwithtwins · 12/02/2022 05:42

Not for the full 7-10 days no. Me and my children were capable of carrying about our normal lives after 2-3 days

ChangingStates · 12/02/2022 05:56

I will treat it like any other illness, if too ill to be able to to work or be out and about I will stay home, if not well but well enough to work etc, then I will.

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 12/02/2022 05:59

I currently have Covid, and yes I am self isolating. The first 2 days were pretty horrific, and I am triple vaxxed. Would absolutely not be comfortable passing it to other people.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 12/02/2022 06:04

I've had covid twice and I wouldn't say it made me really ill but I wasn't well enough to go out the first 3 or 4 days anyway

Iggly · 12/02/2022 06:14

I’m hoping they’ll explain etc is to treat it like other notifiable diseases which require a vaccine.

That’s the bit that people are missing. This isn’t like the flu because it’s vaccines that have made covid relatively mild for most of us. Omicron is not mild and without vaccines I’m guessing we’d be screwed as a population.

I watched an interview with the WHO who explained it nicely. We aren’t in the end game yet, we don’t yet have a long term vaccine, so we should reduce transmission.

What happens when boosters start to wane? What happens about those with long covid? Covid is a sneaky fucker of a virus. For example it increases your risk of heart disease regardless of severity of initial symptoms or risk factors. This is a virus that may seem mild when you first have it but create problems later down the line.

I don’t blame people for not isolating- I blame the government for not doing something about sick pay and better support for those who are self employed etc.

Spikeyball · 12/02/2022 06:18

I will leave the house for exercise and take ds out for exercise and drives. I would the latter before restrictions end because I know ds wouldn't cope otherwise.

UseOfWeapons · 12/02/2022 06:19

I have to test for work (NHS), at the moment, not sure what will happen when things change. We still have to self isolate if we’ve had a close contact, until we’ve had a negative PCR.
If we no longer have to isolate if we have have symptoms, I think that work will still want us to stay away, but I would avoid my elderly parents, and other people, and. wear a mask when out and about. I just wouldn’t confine myself to the house.

BABAHOTEL · 12/02/2022 06:25

Another one that won't test, so I won't isolate.

Toanewstart23 · 12/02/2022 06:28

If ill
I won’t go out for as long as I don’t feel up to it
Just like with any illness

Won’t test ever again

GiantSpider · 12/02/2022 06:28

I'm not planning to self isolate if the guidance does not require me to. I think this is the logical next step towards living with the virus (which must inevitably happen at some point).

TooBored1 · 12/02/2022 06:28

I'll carry on testing a couple times a week and will isolate if I'm positive. It's just not fair on others to potentially infect them, especially as different people react differently and some may get very ill.

I get that it's pretty awful if you don't get paid - we need to choose a better model for our society, where our needs are better protected.

Toanewstart23 · 12/02/2022 06:29

* I don’t blame people for not isolating- I blame the government for not doing something about sick pay and better support for those who are self employed etc.*

The vast majority, me included, just don’t WANT to. Bugger all to do with the government

AFIK · 12/02/2022 06:30

Really interesting thread. Presumably the majority will therefore be happy for their elderly/vulnerable relatives to be treated by nhs staff with “colds” that haven’t been tested for covid and potentially given a deadly virus. Fair enough. Maybe that’s what used to happen pre pandemic.
I really can’t wait for all of this to end but not convinced self isolation should be ending just yet.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 12/02/2022 06:34

@GrandTheftWalrus

So you think your family are above the rules?

Flowersandbread · 12/02/2022 06:40

I guess i won't be testing anymore tbh. Actually I haven't done a routine LFT for 2 weeks anyway. If I was feeling poorly I'd stay home

Iggly · 12/02/2022 06:42

How lovely of you.

When people get chicken pox, D&V, etc are they advised to carry on? Nope. They’re expected to stay away from other people.

Im hoping it’ll be the same for covid.

Why do people think this should be over now?

I think we are fine where we are for now and should carry on until the end of March as originally planned.

There is no scientific support for this. Since when do people think that science should be ignored when it comes to public health?

nether · 12/02/2022 06:47

Yes, and it wouid include working out how to isolate from one of my household (who is in in the critically vulnerable/4 jabs group)

We'll probably all have to keep away from gatherings when this comes in, as the current advice for people in this group, during a time when people with it are not meant to be out and about, is to SD as much as possible, avoid crowded indoor places, insist contacts are 14 days after 2nd jab, and have all visitors wear masks.

What more will we need to do, to remain at the current level of risk?

workwoes123 · 12/02/2022 06:51

Hows it going to work for vulnerable people?
My manger is physically quite frail and definitely CEV and my closest colleague is undergoing cancer treatment so her immune system is seriously compromised. They’ve both carried on working throughout (we are in a school) and it’s been possible because of the strict rules about masking, testing, isolation et. (we aren’t in the U.K.). Under the no testing, no isolation required rules, what happens to them ?

Also, I’m in a book group with a lot ofolder people, some vulnerable. I’ve got a feeling that they will want to keep testing before we meet up in person. Would you do that - test if someone specifically asked you to ?

ThinWomansBrain · 12/02/2022 06:52

I think I'd WFH (I usually hotdesk in a community space), get shopping delivered, not go to restaurants and theateres or use public transport- but if I was asymptomatic I'd definitely go for walks in quiet places wearing a mask.
When I had it though, I was so unwell it was a huge decision to decide whether I had the energy to go to the loo or make a pot of tea, so may not be optional!

Toanewstart23 · 12/02/2022 06:52

Thank you @IgglySmile

littlepeas · 12/02/2022 06:53

A lot of people won't even know they have it when routine testing stops - I wouldn't have even noticed my symptoms if I wasn't testing. People will stop testing, because soon it will cost money.

If I knew I had it I would not work, as I am in fairly close proximity to people - I would still go for walks, etc. But I am unlikely to know I have it as, unless it is glaringly obvious, I won't be testing - hardly anyone will.

WhateverHappenedToFayWray · 12/02/2022 06:54

I tested positive for covid nearly 3 weeks ago and I am still suffering with symptoms. I struggle to sleep at night as I am struggling to breathe. I am young and have no underlying health issues btw.

I genuinely can't believe how selfish some people are. I would feel terrible if I passed it on to someone who was vulnerable.

SweetPotatoDumpling · 12/02/2022 06:55

Surely you just take sick leave...like in 'the olden days' 🤷‍♀️
