Just that really. Considering having a mirena inserted but worried about weight gain as a side effect as I gained weight on the combination pill previously.

I gained a lot of weight on a combined pill, none whatsoever on Mirena.

rattlemehearties · 11/02/2022 19:52

None at all. Is it a known side effect?

ThirdElephant · 11/02/2022 19:54

None. Mirena isn't combined- it's progestin only.

lndnbrdge91 · 11/02/2022 19:56

None, I lost weight. Not a lot but less bloated and never as hungry as I was before (on combined pill)

Preworkouttingle · 11/02/2022 19:57

None. Fell pregnant though…

cocodomingo · 11/02/2022 20:00

None. Although ocasional migraines

Wendysdoll · 11/02/2022 20:01

You can fall pregnant with the coil? God I have one in, I hope not.

NoHeavenNoMore · 11/02/2022 20:02

If you're worried about that, have you considered a non hormonal copper coil?

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 11/02/2022 20:02

0kgs. I thought I did but turned out I was just chubby and needed to get my diet in order.

When it was fitted were you not told that nothing is 100%?

It should have been explained to you before it was inserted, but yes, it's not 100%

rattlemehearties · 11/02/2022 20:15

The coil is more effective than condoms though, with the bonus that periods are non existent!

Yup. You still get periods if you have the copper coil. The mirena coil you dont get periods
PrettyBluebells · 11/02/2022 20:26

None.

Darkstar4855 · 11/02/2022 20:26

None, on any of the three I have had.

The period thing isn't always true! I'm on my 3rd mirena & while my periods have been short & light they've been regular as clockwork since I got this one. First one I had no periods & second one period were light & short but sporadic.

As for weight OP I find that my weight is fairly stable & easier to keep in check while using the mirena.

SWS17 · 11/02/2022 21:15

Thanks all. Really reassured by that - the possibility of weight gain is something I was very worried about…

None in my late 20's/early 30s. It was in for five years.

In my 40s I gained two stone in 7 months and had it removed pronto.

Same body, different time of life, both inserted for heavy periods. It is a very individual thing.

Do people still get the coil? 😟
I think it's quite painful. Could you not use other contraception? I understand your not wanting to take the pill.

Yes. People have choices. There are advantages and disadvantages of each type of contraception and for some of us a 5 or 10 yearly bit of pain and short procedure is worth it for not worrying about contraception the rest of the time and no hormones (copper) or no/light periods (Mirena)
Needaholiday101 · 12/02/2022 06:46

Had the cooper coil for 10 plus years but periods were getting too heavy and really painful. Swapped to mirena last year, no weight gain and only one painful period. Wish I had done it sooner!

HerbivorousRex · 12/02/2022 06:50

I didn’t gain any weight at all.
I absolutely loved the Mirena coil (after the first few months of spotting and cramping). The insertion was painful the first time but definitely bearable with ibuprofen and co-codamol (I was 19 and hadn’t had kids). The removal and 2nd/3rd insertions hurt much less (even though I forgot to take painkillers for the last one).

I didn’t have any periods and loved not having to worry about pills (there are also loads I can’t take due to migraines/higher risk of blood clots, whereas the Mirena is fine).
I had it for over 10 years without getting pregnant (although it is a possibility so it’s important to check the strings regularly to make sure it’s still in place, it’s also the most effective form of contraception other than abstinence/sterilization).
I took it out to TTC and got pregnant 2 months later (so no long term effects on my fertility!)

You hear a lot of horror stories and it’s definitely not for everyone but I had a really positive experience with it (and I’ll definitely use it again once we’re done have children).
