Mirena Coil - to ask how much weight you put on?

Just that really. Considering having a mirena inserted but worried about weight gain as a side effect as I gained weight on the combination pill previously.

One of the reasons I went for a hormonal coil is that the hormone release is localised –so side effects like weight gain, acne and mood swings are far less than other hormonal contraception.

Nothing to worry about, OP.

No weight gain and no periods - win/win for me.

@CanorCanelloni see your GP. You're not too old for a Mirena at all. I got mine at 46 and it got rid of my heavy periods completely. The Mirena is often used along with oestrogen as a form of HRT.

CanorCanelloni · 21/02/2022 08:02

Lots of very positive feedback about Mirena, I'm tempted to try it but I am confused as on a couple of years ago there was thread after thread on which women complained about the horrible side effects with Mirena. It's confusing.

gingerninja99 · 21/02/2022 08:12

No weight gained, I actually lost 4 stone in the first 2 years of having it. Left over baby weight and extra gain from trying the implant

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 21/02/2022 08:15

None. I got migraines though

Weaverspin · 21/02/2022 08:20

No weight gain, and no periods either. In fact, no side effects that I can think of. Fitting it was a faff, and I had spotting for the first couple of months, then all settled down. I’m keeping this for as long as they’ll let me!

Cabbagegarden · 21/02/2022 08:39

My first coil was the mirena that was absolutely fine, no pain on insertion, no weight gain, no periods but it got pulled out during intercourse (i had no clue this happened until he held it up asking what it was). I've had the copper coil for a couple of years now, it was very painful and i nearly fainted when this was inserted. I've had heavy periods like clockwork every month since and put on around a stone the i just can't seem to shift. Not sure if I would recommend either personally but lots of woman have no issues at all with the coil. You do what you feel is best for you and your body.

TheTeenageYears · 21/02/2022 08:44

None. Just had my 4th (and last) started in late 20's and not had a break (just in case that makes any difference).

DivotyFarm · 21/02/2022 08:45

I had one fitted 2 weeks ago and in the past week I've noticed my appetite has decreased. I'm not snacking between meals anymore and have gone off chocolate and I usually eat huge amounts of that. I'm hopeful I'll lose weight!

BobHadBitchTits · 21/02/2022 08:55

This has been offered as an option to me.

Should I do it? I've never had one before so I'm not sure what to expect.

Getting it in isn't much fun, but once it's in you (hopefully) don't have to worry about contraception for 5 years, and as PPs have said, the hormones are released locally in the reproductive system rather than round the whole body (like with the pill/implant/injection) so there's a lower chance of side effects.

I loved my Mirena - had no periods at all with my first one, and only very light spotting each month with my second, and no other side effects. Obviously it varies for different people, though!

ScrumpyBetty · 21/02/2022 12:28

No weight gain with mirena coil

Wish I was one of those lucky people to have no periods though, I've still had periods (light) every month, and my periods now last about 10-14 days.

Rawtinhail · 21/02/2022 12:31

I gained nothing when I had it inserted, but since I've had it removed I'm finding it increasingly difficult to shift weight.

VickyEadieofThigh · 21/02/2022 12:38

None whatsoever.

I went on it because of appalling periods (pain PLUS length - they were going for 11 days out of 22 or 23) and it transformed my life.

ohidoliketobe · 21/02/2022 12:39

6lb 4oz (plus placenta, waters etc.) with surprise DC#3 ...

Odoreida · 21/02/2022 12:40

I also managed to lose weight with the mirena coil. Not having heavy bleeding and pain etc meant that I could exercise without feeling awful all the time

ScrumpyBetty · 21/02/2022 12:56

Me too @Odoreida it's been life changing, I now swim three times a week. Before having coil inserted I couldn't exercise regularly because of awful period side effects every month.

Odoreida · 21/02/2022 13:07

@ScrumpyBetty life-changing is right. I do feel sorry for the many people who suffer from side effects as it works so well for me.
