Spelling my DS name

FootrotDog · 11/02/2022 12:49

My DS is nearly 6.
He is irritated with people mispronouncing his name (there's a kid a couple of years older in school with the same name but he goes by the mispronunciation).
DS has argued with me for about the past 8 months on how to spell his name!!
He wants to spell it slightly differently to reflect how it should be said.
I much prefer the "correct" spelling.
AIBU to insist he spells his name correctly?
YABU: It doesn't matter, let him do it if it makes him happy
YANBU: Of course you should insist he spells it properly.

Louis?

ChittyBangs · 11/02/2022 12:51

I was going to say Louis

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 11/02/2022 12:51

I think we really need to know what the name is to judge

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 11/02/2022 12:51

Is the name Louis? YANBU

PleasantBirthday · 11/02/2022 12:53

It depends. If his name is Louis and he wants to spell it Lewis temporarily, that would be OK, I think. If he wants to spell it Loo-wiss, I think that would be silly.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 11/02/2022 12:53

It's his name, it's obviously bothered him for a long time so it's not a whim and it's him that is facing the issue everyday.

Honestly yes I think you're unreasonable to demand he uses the spelling you chose. Support him in using the spelling he prefers, it's really not something you should have a say in to be honest.

FootrotDog · 11/02/2022 12:54

Pretty sure you were gonna need the name, hence my NC! Grin

It's Xavier.
We pronounce it zay-vier
The older kid is an exay-vier

He wants to write it Zavier

If it's Louis then just persist. Most people do pronounce it properly in life. I'd drop in on the teacher/TA and tell them it's bothering you son and they need to say it properly and correct the kids, I presume it's coming from the staff seeing it written down. It's not unusual for names to have genuine different pronunciations (Esme, Mia etc), so it's something the school can handle.

For god's sake don't spell it Louie.

If it's not Louis you might need to say what it is!

Sirzy · 11/02/2022 12:58

I don’t think either mispronounce it, just different possible pronunciations depending on the origin of the name. But with an older child with the same spelling but different pronunciation it will cause confusion!

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/02/2022 12:59

Ha!

But same as above applies..

(Ex-zay-vi-er is hilarious)

DrManhattan · 11/02/2022 12:59

What is the name?

RussianSpy101 · 11/02/2022 13:00

Zavier is fine.

BadgeronaMoped · 11/02/2022 13:00

I think you have the X-men franchise to thank for that mispronunciation. That's really annoying, maybe let him spell it his way for now, I'm sure he'll grow out of it and use the proper spelling when he's older.

Mo1911 · 11/02/2022 13:00

It's his name, his life and it's causing him problems therefore let him spell it whatever way he wants. Something like this really isn't up to you and why situs you persist in making his life more difficult than it needs to be.

Akite · 11/02/2022 13:00

Keep it as it is, your pronunciation is right. How soon will the other child be leaving the school?
I knew a Xavier when I was younger who went by the nickname Zavs, could he pick a nickname to stop so much comparison?

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 11/02/2022 13:01

@DrManhattan

What is the name?
Did it take you 5 minutes to type that GrinGrin
DrManhattan · 11/02/2022 13:01

Cross Post! Don't change it! It's a great name btw

FootrotDog · 11/02/2022 13:02

@Sirzy

Sorry, just to clarify I meant "mispronounced" only in relation to how my Xavier's name is pronounced! I know there's a fair split between the two ways to say it.

I was also going to say I think it's pronounced Ex-avier in X men.

MaggieMooh · 11/02/2022 13:04

Your son goes by a mispronunciation too, because it’s correctly pronounced Zha-vee-air 🤷‍♀️

TigerLilyTail · 11/02/2022 13:04

I'd let him change it if it's really annoying him. I don't see the harm.

DillDanding · 11/02/2022 13:05

Exay-vier? Omg that’s flipping ridiculous.

I’d be really annoyed.

Parpophone · 11/02/2022 13:05

@Luredbyapomegranate

Ha!

But same as above applies..

(Ex-zay-vi-er is hilarious)

Why is it "hilarious"?

Perfectly acceptable pronunciation.

HelloKeith · 11/02/2022 13:06

My DC have multiple Elenas in their classes. Pronounced Ell--en-nah, Elle-lay-nah, and possibly some other way. Everyone gets it right after the first few times. Why is the school not working harder?

How does he feel about becoming a "zav" for short?

VanCleefArpels · 11/02/2022 13:08

I think you should encourage him to spell it the correct way because as he grows up and gets used to spelling it a different t way he might get in a pickle with the difference between his “name” and official documents eg when buying flight tickets, name has to be the same as passport. This has happened on my family where a child was named eg James but always been known as Jamie
