How many takeaways?!

Southtrainer · 11/02/2022 09:11

I'm wondering if my husband and I are over indulging and it would be good to know if we are normal or not Grin

How many takeaways do you and your DP (not DC) have per week / month? 🤫

OP posts:
Dishwashersaurous · 11/02/2022 12:55

Once every two or three months

CatherinedeBourgh · 11/02/2022 12:56

Have had less than 5 in the past 15 years.

Not martyrs, just living somewhere where they are not easily available, so the ones we have had have been while moving around/travelling.

georgarina · 11/02/2022 12:56

One every 3-6 months. Really not often. They're just so expensive where I live - at least £30 - and often arrive cold/messy/not great quality.

tokyo1 · 11/02/2022 12:57

Twice a month I think. Sometimes more if busy with work and no time to cook.

Enko · 11/02/2022 12:57

Once a month to every 6 weeks.. Got a bit more after we moved and are near the most amazing burger place

Maria1982 · 11/02/2022 12:57

Used to be once a fortnight, once a week max.
Currently it’s gone up to once a week, every week (very occasionally twice a week). It’s gone up cause I’m pregnant and tired, he’s working long hours and we both had covid not long ago.

UseOfWeapons · 11/02/2022 12:58

Chip shop chips about once a year.
That’s all.
Prefer to make things at home, tbh.

Laiste · 11/02/2022 12:58

@VeryLongBeeeeep

ShallWeTalkAboutBruno I'll have yours then Grin
Sorry - i've got it. But we can share Grin
FfsKaren · 11/02/2022 13:05

Dh and kids once a week chip shop
Dh often has a curry by himself too
Me I only like pizza takeaway so maybe 3 times a year

Laiste · 11/02/2022 13:06

@WombatChocolate - ''... of course lots of people can perfectly afford this frequency without it impacting anything else they need to spend or save for (for example housing or pensions) and lots of people might eat extremely healthily the rest of the week and be a perfect weight and BMI and exercise frequently. I know eating weekly takeaway might not drive you into financial difficulty or make you over weight.....but what about those where it does contribute to these problems....is there any awareness of the connection?''

Any awareness? Who in this country hasn't heard of the complicated social connections between poverty and obesity/bad bad eating habits?

Laiste · 11/02/2022 13:07

i meant bad not bad bad Grin

Dmsandfloatydress · 11/02/2022 13:08

A few times a year. Usually Christmas eve and emergency situations. We eat out more regularly. At least once a month.

silverbubbles · 11/02/2022 13:10

once every 10 days

Sh05 · 11/02/2022 13:10

I've cut it down to Once a month. Even then ithink of the trolley full of shopping I could have bought with that 30 odd quid.
I'm not a miser it's just I generally cook from scratch and I have a Cupboard full of spices so we might order from a place once then I'll remake the same dish at home. Home made pizza has become something I can get on the table in less than 2 hours from scratch, which includes making the dough and sauce and toppings.
We're a family of 7 so this is one place where I know I'm Definitely saving lots.

qualitygirl · 11/02/2022 13:14

@WombatChocolate I have a takeaway on average once a week, I am neither in debt or obese. Everything in moderation I suppose

Sh05 · 11/02/2022 13:16

I fully accept that when I order takeaway I'm paying not for the food but just for the day off cooking. The taste is the same wherever we get it from, I always feel unsatisfied and disappointed with myself that I gave in and didn't just cook it myself.

peboh · 11/02/2022 13:18

At the moment, one every other month due to both trying to shift some pounds. However usually once a week maybe every two weeks depending on what we're doing.

catfunk · 11/02/2022 13:19

Probably once a week on average. Thai noodles, sometimes an Indian curry or pizza. They're always massive portions so we pack up half each for lunch the next day when it arrives.

We very rarely eat out so enjoy a takeaway !

TicksallBoxes · 11/02/2022 13:19

Over the last decade I've got really into cooking and in comparison so many take always taste a bit meh, so about six a year now I guess.

CouncilHousedAndViolentBaby · 11/02/2022 13:20

Every other day😳

Laiste · 11/02/2022 13:20

It would have been interesting if the OP had included asking what the average spend on posters 'take away' is.

If it was 30 quid for the 2 of us then we would only be once a month as well. But our village chippy is well cheap. A 'small' chips is only £2 and does 2 adults easily. DH has their double cheese burger and i have a small fish and we're seriously stuffed full on less than a tenner.

hiredandsqueak · 11/02/2022 13:23

Once every four to six weeks although I cant remember the last time we had one. It always feels disappointing as the food is never as nice as I imagine it to be.

Kitfish · 11/02/2022 13:23

The children have one per week (Friday nights). We have about one per month.

WombatChocolate · 11/02/2022 13:28

Quality girl, Perhaos we see ‘everything in moderation’ differently. To me, once a week takeaway doesn’t seem like moderation, but it clearly does to you.

That was my point really….that people’s idea of moderation has shifted. Once a week takeaway isn’t perceived as a luxury or pushing the boundaries, but entirely normal or almost one’s right after a full-on week. That’s so different to in the past, when it would have been considered a huge indulgence by most, especially if they weren’t well off.

Someone just mentioned they consider the half trolley load they could get for the £30 takeaway bill, and that focuses their mind. Perhaps that’s how people thought in the past. But people think differently now…they don’t seem to think like that, but then they will still suggest they are choosing between heat and food when the energy bills rise.

I suppose expectations have risen. People expect more now and see more things as essentials and not luxuries. A takeaway weekly isn’t considered a luxury, or an indulgence, hence all the ‘only once a week’ comments, instead of people saying ‘as often as once a week’. On one level, if course that’s a good thing if standards of living have risen, but have they really? Most people haven’t had real term pay rises since the financial crash and more and more people struggle to buy property and most people have insufficient put into their pensions. People arein debt and obesity is growing….although none of the frequent takeaway eaters on MN…obviously!

I’m not saying we should return to the times when hardly anyone ate out or had takeaway. I’m just interested in the cultural shifts going on and how they feed into some of the difficulties of the day.

And interesting to hear from a couple of posters who say their parents had regular takeaways when they were young, but they don’t now. I wonder if they are younger posters with younger parents, or again, if regular takeaway eating in the past was focused amongst certain groups. I don’t know.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/02/2022 13:29

We use to get a takeaway every week, sometimes twice. It was just born out of laziness really. Now we only get them occasionally, once ever couple of months and is usually to mark an achievement by one of the kids.

We cut down because we realised we weren't getting much pleasure out of it. It had just become a habit born out of lack of time which wasn't needed anymore.
