To think dogs shouldn’t be allowed in shops

Has anyone else seen that wilkos are now allowing dogs in their stores? I’m not keen on dogs as it is and wouldn’t really want other shops to start allowing dogs in. What about people that are scared of them? Seriously why do you need to take your dog shopping? I hope no other shops start doing this.

Unless for medical reasons - nope. Dogs should not be in shops, cafes, or restaurants. Or bloody offices. I truly love dogs but I hate how we're all meant to be totally accepting of them now. Not everyone likes dogs or wants to be around them.

Total bugbear of mine was working in an office where people had dogs in all day. I reserve the right to eat my lunch without someone's smelly pet trying to knick my sandwich off me.

In fairness, it's probably dog owners than the actual dogs that are the issue.

Sprig1 · 09/02/2022 15:12

I love dogs and I don't want them in shops. Too many people are not in control of their dogs. Apart from the safety aspect there is the cleanliness issue. I have only ever been to Pets at Home twice but will never go again. There was literally dog pee everywhere, including on a lot of the stock.

InTheNameOfAllThatIsHonest · 09/02/2022 15:14

@SpaghettiArmsMurderer the issue is whether they are a nuisance when you are out and about. Some people think dogs are, others think children are.

Mylittlepixie · 09/02/2022 15:15

Ive worked in a food store for a while and honestly compared to what some people do to, a dog licking the food would bother me less.
I get that some people dont like them and that it’s unhygienic around food. But so are people tbh. You have to wash the stuff at home either way.

I see it more as about rights. An adult has the same right to be in a shop as a child as they are both people. A dog has less right to be there because it’s not a human and human rights trump animal rights.

YABU. Dogs unfortunately do need to be allowed in shops. Dog theft is rife. Dogs are being stolen all over the country, not just from outside shops or in cars, but also from their own homes (more than 50% of dog theft occurs from the home/garden). Until dog theft is treated as an actual crime with appropriate punishment, people are wary of leaving dogs alone at all and many would rather take them to the shops etc. It's a sad world we live in!!!
I fail to see why I should be subjected to dogs in shops because of this. It's a terrible idea.
YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 09/02/2022 15:27

I have never ever bought an item of clothing with hair and slobber on it, not tripped over a lead in a store. Where do you live that’s there’s so many dogs in shops?!

Bloody love dogs in shops - more the merrier I say.

Bagelsandbrie · 09/02/2022 15:28

I don’t want dogs in shops (unless guide dogs of course). I think there is a culture shift in terms of people wanting to own dogs and take them everywhere with them and so shops are trying to cash in on this by making themselves dog friendly but what about people who don’t like dogs? I don’t dislike dogs as such but I don’t want them in shops. They lick their bums and lick everywhere and slobber on stuff. No thanks!

MrsWinters · 09/02/2022 15:29

Commercial decision, dog owner represent a large portion of the economy and nowadays you can’t tie your dog outside a shop any more or leave it in the car.
They’ll gain more in business that they’ll lose from those clutching their pearls muttering about hygiene.

ElftonWednesday · 09/02/2022 15:39

Depends entirely on the business owner.

I wouldn't want to take my dog into food stores though. She would think all her Christmases had come at once.

This is very true. I now will not touch anything loose or unpackaged after the things I've witnessed 🤮
DrWhoNowww · 09/02/2022 15:44

Totally agree, dogs shouldn’t be allowed in shops.

The rise in dog ownership has led to a massive increase in badly behaved pets - I was in a garden centre just after Christmas and watched a man allow his dog to urinate up against one of the clothes stand (the garden centre has a joules/pavers/regatta type concession in it) and then he just wondered off leaving the bottom of this jacket dripping.

Absolutely grim.

Itsthedramamick · 09/02/2022 15:45

Precious pet owners 🤦‍♀️ Just leave them at home!

BertieQueen · 09/02/2022 15:47

I’m pleased that more places are allowing dogs in, just hope the bad dog owners don’t ruin it for the rest of us.

Mariposista · 09/02/2022 15:50

I personally wouldn't take my normally very well behaved dog into a shop even if allowed - not a great environment for him, especially as he is young and easily distracted.
However I don't agree with making rules for 'people who are scared of dogs'. If you are scared of them you should be doing something about that, especially in the case of children - dogs are not like snakes, you can't easily avoid them, you will come across them everywhere and you have to get used to that. and let's be honest, the vast majority won't hurt you!

InTheNameOfAllThatIsHonest · 09/02/2022 15:53

@SpaghettiArmsMurderer I see it as someone not wanting to have to put up with others' decisions. The child doesn't decide to go to a shop or a restaurant, like a dog doesn't. It's the parent/owner who makes that decision. That decision affects others.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 09/02/2022 15:55

Our dog comes with us to places. He always comes to pubs he's allowed. If he's allowed in a shop or cafe and I am on my own he'd come in with me.

It's up to the owners of the places to dictate. I don't care if places don't let him in.

CornishGem1975 · 09/02/2022 15:56

@Mariposista Actually I disagree, you should be easily able to avoid other people's dogs if you want to! It shouldn't be hard...

beaverdiego · 09/02/2022 15:59

YABU

Dogs on lead, and fairly well behaved I have no issue with. They are highly unlikely to do their business indoors I suspect. I also feel that many dogs are cleaner and/or better behaved than many humans anyway haha.

Nah. He likes getting pork scratchings in the pub. And he comes with us on holiday too.
Comedycook · 09/02/2022 16:03

I buy and sell on ebay sometimes. If I sell clothes I always say they're from a "smoke free, pet free home". I like that if I'm buying too. No way would I buy clothes from a shop which allows dogs

So no shop ever then?
BitOutOfPractice · 09/02/2022 16:05

People with phobias can't expect the world to revolve around them.

Or, dog owners can't expect the world to revolve around them?

shepabear · 09/02/2022 16:06

I'm a dog owner and very fond of them but no I don't think pet dogs should be in shops - obviously guide dogs are different. A pet shop would be different but otherwise no I think they should be kept outside of shops and restaurants. When we walk our dog sometimes we stop at a cafe and sit outside with her if there is outdoor seating and have a drink and some food, but I'd never go inside with her. If we have to run errands while walking her like go to the post office then one of us waits outside the shop with her while the other runs in, or we leave her at home. I appreciate that not everyone likes dogs or might be allergic to them, and can completely understand why people don't want dogs in supermarkets/clothes shops/bookshops etc.
