House on 16 + layers

ByMyName · 08/02/2022 17:40

I’m guilty of having the house on 23 Blush because I like being warm. I’ve been saying to DH that I will make some changes.

Today I set the hearing at 16. This is what it will be say and night.

I had to wear a jumper around the house but it’s genuinely fine.

We can really make some habit changes and cope with the has increase. Or am I deluded?

23 is hot!

We are usually on 18

PunsDontKillPeople · 08/02/2022 17:41

This baffles me.

Doesn't everyone wear a jumper in the house in winter? I can't imagine ever heating a house to a temperature where I didn't need a jumper or big cardigan inside!!

BurntO · 08/02/2022 17:42

I dunno OP….if wearing a jumper in the house is a new thing for you, I’m not sure what to say Grin 23 IS warm. Maybe you will be fine but many most definitely won’t be .

AnathemaPulsifer · 08/02/2022 17:43

Why would you keep it so hot at night? I’d go 17 in the day and 8 at night when you’re tucked up under your duvet.

Well… I used to. Then I had babies and I wanted the house to be toasty for them. BIG SIDS warning as I was doing it wrong.

Now expecting DC3 and planning to have the house on 16. Everyone will wear jumpers. I need to get some more.

If I had my heating on 23 we would all boil! Your gas bill must be horrendous! Ours doesn't go past 18 and is off totally overnight.

Jumpers when its chilly etc are standard in our home and just about everyone else I know is similar.

Frlrlrubert · 08/02/2022 17:44

Ours is 20 and I'm still in a jumper. I get cold easily. At 16 I'd be in thermal base layers, clothes, think jumper and gloves if I wasn't moving around.

Darbs76 · 08/02/2022 17:44

Depends on your insulation etc, I set mine to come on when the house is under 20 degree 5-8am and 5-10pm, then under 19 rest of time. But it’s pretty cold in the house when it gets under 19.5. Mine would be Baltic if I let it get to 16. I can fortunately afford it, and I’d rather make other cuts then be cold personally

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/02/2022 17:45

Oh god I couldn't cope with the house at 23. I allow Grin dh to put the log burner on in the living room on the evening but basically sit there complaining about how hot it is for an hour then retreat to the cold bedroom.

I wfh and the house is usually sat at 15-16 when everything's off. If it's a really cold snap, I'll put it on at lunchtime.

If we do have the heating on (3pm-7pm winter only), it's at 18max.

I don’t know… someone posted to keep it same temperature all the time as it’s more efficient? Really not my area of expertise.

Darbs76 · 08/02/2022 17:45

Also off for the night at 10pm

CorrBlimeyGG · 08/02/2022 17:45

Wearing a jumper in the house is fine. Wearing several layers plus dressing gown and still being cold is very uncomfortable. If you've only lowered the stat today you're still benefiting from the previously higher temp, plus it is mild today.

Twospaniels · 08/02/2022 17:45

23 to 16 is a big difference!

We have ours on 19 during the day when we’re in and down to 16 overnight.

Sometimes late afternoon I feel cold having just been sitting working from home and I might turn it up to 20.5 for an hour

ByMyName · 08/02/2022 17:46

Also I heard you should not have heating completely off as pipes may freeze etc

OP posts:
tiredanddangerous · 08/02/2022 17:46

Do you really need heating on at night? Ours goes off when we go to bed and comes on half an hour before we get up in the morning. I have fleecy pyjamas and a winter duvet and I'm not cold over night.

OwlNoises101 · 08/02/2022 17:47

23 is baking. 16 is cold. Why not go for a reasonable 18 in the day and off at night?

OwlNoises101 · 08/02/2022 17:48

Ours is always off at night, and despite it going down to -10 outside once, the pipes have never frozen.

AmbushedByCake1 · 08/02/2022 17:50

Do you really sleep with your heating on at 23 degrees?

Merryoldgoat · 08/02/2022 17:50

I have mine around 23 but my heating is very efficient and house is very well insulated.

I get very cold at about 20 and am not willing to have it that low.

My bill is currently about £105 a month for dual fuel and it’s a large 3 bed. I run a dishwasher, washing machine, dryer and lots of other stuff too.

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 08/02/2022 17:52

We wear lots of top and bottom layers and keep the thermostat at as low a temperature as possible, not just a jumper.

minipie · 08/02/2022 17:52

There’s a lot of options between 23 and 16!

I would say 16 at night is good. In the day, I’d ideally want 20 (although only in the rooms I use).

I wear warm jumpers and slippers. At the moment I’m in my unheated N facing office with two jumpers on. It’s ok.

ISeeTheLight · 08/02/2022 17:57

Why do you have the heating on at night? Surely there's a compromise here. 16 is very cold!
Ours is on 20.5 during the day and off at night.

Anonymouseposter · 08/02/2022 17:57

I would be too cold at 16 even well wrapped up but my house is old with high ceilings etc. i have the heating on about 19 in the day and completely off at night. 23 to 16 is a very big difference.

ByMyName · 08/02/2022 17:57

@AmbushedByCake1

Do you really sleep with your heating on at 23 degrees?
Really embarrassed by this. We are meant to put it lower at night. And we really forget. Then DH will wake up sweating and goes to reduce if. Not great!

Congratulations on your pregnancy @ByMyName! I use the Jojo Maman Bebe Sleep Snugglers. Baby started sleeping through in them too because they were fidgeting less. Sold on eBay for cheaper, I bought two in a 20% offer they had. Recommended for down to 15 degrees with two layers. Gave me so much peace of mind that baby was comfy, I was constantly checking them and their temp otherwise.
