House on 16 + layers

ByMyName · 08/02/2022 17:40

I’m guilty of having the house on 23 Blush because I like being warm. I’ve been saying to DH that I will make some changes.

Today I set the hearing at 16. This is what it will be say and night.

I had to wear a jumper around the house but it’s genuinely fine.

We can really make some habit changes and cope with the has increase. Or am I deluded?

I hate a cold house, but even I would find 23 overnight too much!
We have ours at around 19 during the day. DH works from home and gets chilly sitting at his desk, so he puts a blanket over his knees sometimes.
We can’t go too low at night as our 3 year old (suspected ASD) hates wearing too many clothes but also won’t stay under his covers, so we usually have it at around 17.

Coulddowithanap · 08/02/2022 20:46

And it is actually a myth that keeping your heating on makes it more efficient /saves money etc, you should just heat the rooms you need when you need to, otherwise you are just wasting energy. You may find you don't actually need the heating on at all some days.

Tulipvase · 08/02/2022 20:47

I don’t really believe most thermostats are correct. And where are people living that they set their heating 15/16 degrees? I live in a draughty old Victorian terrace (so to be fair we have the help of neighbours). The back door blows a gale down the side and the floor boards have massive gaps. With no heating, our house rarely drops below 16 degrees - unless it’s really very cold. When I got home today at 4pm it was 17.5 degrees. No heating since 7am.

BuritoCat · 08/02/2022 20:47

Mines set to 16 hour in the morning, hour in the evening it's fine even when it feels like -6 outside. Smile
At 23 your bill must be through the roof! Shock

LlamaLucy · 08/02/2022 20:49

23 is criminal! Mine’s simply not on. (Terrace, so we get the benefit of the others, plus we own jumpers and socks, and… it’s 11C outside - VERY MILD!).

Leilala · 08/02/2022 20:50

DH away so staying with DM has the heating set to 14!

14 degrees is not a target temperature, 14 degrees is abuse!

Tulipvase · 08/02/2022 20:50

Ignore me - I was reading an MSE thread.

But I don’t believe most people are comfortably sitting around at a temp of 16 degrees - that’s cold as an indoor temp.

User8721643839 · 08/02/2022 20:51

YABU as it isnt even cold at the moment

Agrudge · 08/02/2022 20:52

Heating is off and I'm in shorts and t shirt and socks

DisneyMillie · 08/02/2022 20:54

Mines 21 downstairs, 19 upstairs - on all day downstairs as underfloor heating - I’m still in a jumper and have a blanket over me watching tv - I’d be miserable at 16!

BarbaraofSeville · 08/02/2022 20:57

@Angrymum22

My DSis and I were discussing menopausal hot flushes recently and how central heating is totally unnecessary when you are menopausal. In fact DSis thought that energy companies were missing out on an untapped natural heat source. A roomful of menopausal women probably produce enough heat to supply an average house.
God yes. I've WFH 80-100% of the time for the last 2 years and I genuinely believe this is the reason our heating bill has not increased in this time (every cloud and all that), until the prices rises started kicking in last October.

Ours is set at 18 in the daytime, 20 in the evening and 16 overnight, which in practice means off as it rarely comes on unless v cold. I do click it on boost for half an hour if I get a bit cold, but that's after I've put a hoodie and socks on. Or just wait for a well timed hot flush.

In fact, I've just been to open the bedroom window because the house is boiling although it isn't really because I also clicked the heating onto the nightime setting an hour ago. We only have a 1 tog quilt all year round too.

In fact I think just reading about the people who have the heating on at night, wear pyjamas in bed or have a 15 tog quilt and are still cold is hot flush inducing.

It is where I live It's been blowing a gale and lashing rain. I've got the heating up to about 20c. Lovely and toasty Wink
museumum · 08/02/2022 21:00

16 is way too cold for sitting reading or working at the computer - I’d need gloves! It’s ok for doing housework and moving around. But it’s too warm for sleeping.

We are generally between 17 and 20 when we’re relaxing during the day but off overnight. It rarely drops below 14.

RosesAndHellebores · 08/02/2022 21:02

In our old house it was usually 17/18 and a jumper, usually not though. Turned down to 15 at night. DH was up first and turned it up for me and the DC.

Now we have hive heating. Different zones at different temps. Never more than 17/18. If cold put on a jumper.

It's a common sense issue not a money issue.

VestaTilley · 08/02/2022 21:03

23 is mad and wasteful. Just wear a jumper.

Unless you’re elderly or have small children at home or you have a very cold house, you only really need the heating on 6.30am - 8.30am then 5pm - 7pm unless it’s properly freezing outside.

I’d set it at 21 in very cold weather or 19 normally.

AngelinaFibres · 08/02/2022 21:04

We have heating on at 21° 7 to 10 in the morning and 5 til 10 in the evening. Off all night. We are retired. If its chilly in the afternoon and I am doing a sitting down job then I light the wood burner. Wood is mainly free. No gas available so heating oil in a big tank.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 08/02/2022 21:07

Ours is generally on at 19 during the day - if we feel cold, we borrow a cat or a dog Grin

Off at night - it's normally 14-15 degrees when I wake up for a wee.

Caspianberg · 08/02/2022 21:10

Regarding pipes, where we are the heating system is just set up so if it drops below -2 outside, water (cold if off), is just pumped around the radiators. That way no heating is wasted, and pipes don’t freeze.

So at ours in winter heating goes off around 8pm, then usually overnight at some point the cooler water will be pumped around a few times before heating back on at 6am. It’s also set that if it drops lower ie -5/6 outside the actual heating comes on on a lid of override setting

No, I need it on after 7. That's when I'm just relaxing for the evening. I switch it off just before bed.
Moonface88 · 08/02/2022 21:15

I think the WHO recommends that your home's temperature shouldn't dip below 18 degrees. I would need a jumper if my home was 18 though, I really feel the cold.

Babyghirl · 08/02/2022 21:31

I heat the heating on only have it on for an hour in the evening, I prefare to be to cold than to warm, and for the hour in the evening its set at 16 and that's norm to just dry my uniform for work the next day.

EdHelpPls · 08/02/2022 21:43

I don't think our thermostat is accurate. It's currently at 14 except morning and bathtime when its 17. I wear a long sleeve top and either a vest top under or a cardi over and dont feel too cold at 14 but need to take it off at 17. I hate being cold in the slightest!
If I'd a newborn I'd probably look to get a decent room thermometer to make sure their bedroom stays a healthy temp. I think I read 18-20 for a newborn? (It's been a few years!)

GracieLouFreeebush · 08/02/2022 21:47

I had no idea what mines on, I just checked and it’s 24.5! I must be a cold person though because it feels comfortable and I’ve got an oodie on. It turns off at 10 though but comes on for 15 mins at 12, 2 and 4 though otherwise the cold makes me cough.

spidersenses · 08/02/2022 21:57

With my old thermostat we used to have it set to 20, 21 max. We got a new thermostat a few months ago and 20 now feels cold with this one! Super strange what a difference it makes. Same location, just different thermostat.

T00Ts · 08/02/2022 22:10

I feel sick if the house is too hot. I don’t have the heating on at all if I can help it. I just light fires and wear lots of clothes. I sleep with my bedroom windows wide open year round. I love an icy cold bedroom so I can get snuggly under my quilt.
