House on 16 + layers

ByMyName · 08/02/2022 17:40

I’m guilty of having the house on 23 Blush because I like being warm. I’ve been saying to DH that I will make some changes.

Today I set the hearing at 16. This is what it will be say and night.

I had to wear a jumper around the house but it’s genuinely fine.

We can really make some habit changes and cope with the has increase. Or am I deluded?

@Mylittlepixie

Ours is on 22 always day and night. During the day when its sunny it goes up to 23/24 Blush I hate being cold! My DDs room is always 1 degree cooler than the rest of the house and i shiver just walking into her room. I do wear jumpers during the day!
How can you bear that at night?
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/02/2022 17:12

I sleep better if it’s warmer. I hate having a cold head.

gogohm · 09/02/2022 17:17

Ours is only on for 3 hours a day set at 18. It really isn't that cold, nothing a jumper and thick dicks can't hold off. I can only assume people west far less clothes than me, my old house was old, no cavity walls and we still coped on 3 hours a day heating

Reporting back… 16 is cold!

A jumper is not enough. I’ve been in my thick dressing gown since 5.

Ours is mostly at 19, occasionally 20. We would sweat buckets at 23. I don't even always wear a jumper at 19.

Don't be miserable. It's no way to live. Turn the heat up and relax in your own home. If the bills get high, think of other ways to economise.
Youngatheart00 · 09/02/2022 19:35

I voted YABU because in my view 23 is too hot and 16 too cold!

We have ours on for 90 mins at 21 to warm house up in the morning and then 90 mins at night at the same temp.

At all other times it’s set to 16 but rarely kicks in

ByMyName · 09/02/2022 19:36

@Maireas it was more of social experiment. Heating set at 20. House starting to warm up.

Good! Now relax....

YouHaveMail · 09/02/2022 20:01

@ByMyName I'm the same with heating. I don't know how people have the heating off at night, I wish I didn't get so cold 🥶

Crimesean · 09/02/2022 20:32

PIL keep their house at 23° - I always pack layers when we visit, and even then I'm uncomfortable at night in just a negligee.

I prefer 18° during the day, and heating switched off at night unless it's below freezing.

Ours is 22. I’ve got thick thermal socks on, a long sleeve t, a thick hoodie and a cardi. I’m still cold.

AuntyBumBum · 09/02/2022 20:42

@Darbs76

Depends on your insulation etc, I set mine to come on when the house is under 20 degree 5-8am and 5-10pm, then under 19 rest of time. But it’s pretty cold in the house when it gets under 19.5. Mine would be Baltic if I let it get to 16. I can fortunately afford it, and I’d rather make other cuts then be cold personally
Don't really get this. 16° is 16° whether it's in your house or mine?

22 is about the July average high temperature where I am. Are you cold in the summer?

ziggiestardust · 09/02/2022 20:57

We sit with it at 22 on most of the time. We do try and remember to turn it off overnight.

BagpipeBarmcake · 09/02/2022 21:01

Blimey, we only have our heating on for a couple of hours at getting up time and then 4.30 - 10pm. Wouldn't dream of leaving it on overnight, that's what duvets are for surely? When I am WFH I have a nice fleecy blanket out of sight on video calls - wouldn't dream of running the heating just for one person, although on really cold days I do sometimes press the 'one-hour' button.

BurbageBrook · 09/02/2022 21:09

I have it at 20, but only for a few hours a day. Having it on overnight is truly bonkers! Just set a recurring alarm to turn it off if you’re both forgetful.

declutteringmymind · 09/02/2022 21:35

Ours is on 14 most of the time and we just boost it for 2 hours at a time as required. We have a fire going though so don't need it as much.

16 is a bit low. I'd go down 2 degrees at a time if you can afford to.

Get an oodie, and some quality thermals.

We have ours on overnight. ASD 3 year old won’t stay under his covers or wear layers (sensory issue). So he’d freeze if we didn’t.
ParkingFeud · 09/02/2022 21:42

Ours is generally about 16, not through choice but because it's a tumbling down draughty rental. I read that your body starts to make brown fat to keep warm when it's consistently cold. I found it awful at first, I thought I was such a 'need to be warm person but actually you really do get used to it. I read it takes about 10 days to start feeling comfortable.

Lipsandlashes · 09/02/2022 21:45

Either 17 or 18 here and heating off over night. We’d never not wear a jumper in the house during the winter!

SilverGlassHare · 09/02/2022 21:46

@AnathemaPulsifer

Why would you keep it so hot at night? I’d go 17 in the day and 8 at night when you’re tucked up under your duvet.
Wow that’s boiling. I have it at 13 during the day and 0 at night. We wear 4 layers and do star jumps if we’re cold, anything else is a sign you hate the planet.
RunningFromInsanity · 09/02/2022 21:50

Hot water bottles are your friend.
Put under duvet as you are getting ready for bed.

HootOwl · 09/02/2022 21:59

@SilverGlassHare 🤣🤣🤣 it's all getting a bit "four Yorkshiremen", isn't it?
