to run tumble drier and washing machine overnight in terrace

I live in an old terrace house and my washer/drier are on 2nd floor.
It's 11pm and I have just realise that dryer is probably not just noisy and vibrating for me. Is it v antisocial to do this, I was thinking of putting a wash in too.

OP posts:
cheekychaplin · 07/02/2022 23:06

I would say it's more dangerous than anti social

CherryBlossomCheer · 07/02/2022 23:06

Just depends on the house whether your neighbours can hear it or not, could you ask them?

Babadook76 · 07/02/2022 23:07

I’d ask the neighbours.

cheekychaplin · 07/02/2022 23:07

Sorry i have just reread. You do r mean overnight at all, do you Blush

I'm in a mid terrace and I use my washer late on but I can't hear either of my neighbours so just assume they can't hear mine.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 07/02/2022 23:07

You've just admitted it's anti-social. You sound lovely.

cheekychaplin · 07/02/2022 23:07

Don't mean overnight Blush

PriamFarrl · 07/02/2022 23:09

It depends how long the wash is. If it’s a 3 hour job that’ll be spinning at 2am then don’t do it.

Also I personally never leave the washing machine or moreover the tumble dryer running overnight. Too much danger of a fire.

SmellyOldOwls · 07/02/2022 23:11

Yeah I wouldn't put them on after 8 or 9 probably, having said that I actually ask Alexa to play washing machine noises for me but it's different when it's your own choice.

nerdsville · 07/02/2022 23:11

I live in an old mid terrace and can practically hear my neighbours breathe due to the lack of soundproofing. If one of them ran a washing machine or tumble drier upstairs at 11pm then I would be plotting a homicide.

Justkeeppedaling · 07/02/2022 23:12

Why is it dangerous?
milkyaqua · 07/02/2022 23:13

Driers can catch fire, left unattended.

SantaClawsServiette · 07/02/2022 23:13

Yes, I would really avoid it that late. But could be worth asking the neighbours if they can hear it.

Fl0w3ry · 07/02/2022 23:14

I think it depends on your neighbours. I live next door to noisy party people so I would put mine on that late. If your neighbours are quieter I wouldn’t.

Hairyfriend · 07/02/2022 23:16

Depends how loud in Db your washer/dryer is, how much of a vibration is causes and what sound proofing you have between the houses?

When I lived in a fairly well sound proofed flat with tall ceilings, I could certainly feel and hear when the upstairs flat had their washing machine on! Their kitchen was above ours, so I couldnt hear it from my bedroom, but if the layout had been different then YES, I'd find this really antisocial.

Sound obviously sounds much louder later at night with less traffic, less outside noise, less noise inside a house generally. Even if you can't hear THEIR machines in the day, doesn't mean that YOURS, at 11pm isn't terribly loud and disruptive!

Do you know the neighbours? Can you hear their machines? Can you ask them? I personally would wash/dry at that time of night at all given the living arrangements.

cheekychaplin · 07/02/2022 23:16

@Justkeeppedaling

My mistake. I thought OP meant overnight when she was in bed.

Hairyfriend · 07/02/2022 23:17

Typo- I WOULDN'T wash/dry at that time of night!!!!!

melj1213 · 07/02/2022 23:17

YABU

If it was the ground floor then I'd probably say it was annoying but not the end of the world unless it was very loud/vibrated violently - as someone who lived in a terrace and now a flat, you have to get used to other people's noise and a washer/dryer in a neighbours kitchen is unlikely to be much more than a dull hum from a bedroom on a separate floor - but if it's on the second floor then it is likely to be near the neighbours bedrooms (especially if it is against a party wall) and therefore is more likely to be disturbing them.

CoastalWave · 07/02/2022 23:23

It's dangerous. That's enough reason NOT to do it.

You should never leave a washer or a dryer on over night.

My driers always on the go when I’m out
ambushedbywine · 07/02/2022 23:28

I think downstairs would be fine but upstairs at night is antisocial if it can be heard loudly in their bedrooms. Perhaps just ask your neighbour?

cheekychaplin · 07/02/2022 23:29

@Babadook76

So what? That doesn't make it any less dangerous Confused

Elieza · 07/02/2022 23:29

Number one cause of fires.

Never run these things when you are asleep.

oviraptor21 · 07/02/2022 23:32

What's the point of economy 7 if you don't run your appliances in the cheap window?

Justkeeppedaling · 07/02/2022 23:34

@milkyaqua

Driers can catch fire, left unattended.

Presumably they could catch fire in the daytime too though. So why is it more dangerous to run them at night? Hmm

Yerroblemom1923 · 07/02/2022 23:34

I don't have a drier because they're dangerous and expensive. I do put my washing machine on past 10pm sometimes if I've forgotten to put it on earlier. I only put it on the quick cycle, then spin it again. We live in a terrace but it's pretty old. I can't hear the neighbours unless they're drilling.
