to run tumble drier and washing machine overnight in terrace

I live in an old terrace house and my washer/drier are on 2nd floor.
It's 11pm and I have just realise that dryer is probably not just noisy and vibrating for me. Is it v antisocial to do this, I was thinking of putting a wash in too.

OP posts:

I sleep under a fire blanket next to my fridge.

I sleep in my fridge with a fire blanket and a fireman. We switch the fridge off first, of course.

TigerLilyTail · 08/02/2022 09:47

I was also going to point out that they definitely aren't the number one cause of fires. They're fairly low down the list.

Anyway, the vibrations in a terrace would be pretty bad so better not to run them late at night.

cheekychaplin · 08/02/2022 09:48

I’m really struggling to believe that tumble driers are the fire hazard that people are claiming on this thread

A quick Google or read of the fire service website will maybe help? People are not making it up. The advice is there to help prevent fires. Minimising it is dangerous.

cheekychaplin · 08/02/2022 09:48

Makos should say to minimise fire/fire damage/risk to life.

HoldingTheDoor · 08/02/2022 09:51

www.northwalesfire.gov.wales/news/2018/11/tumble-dryer-dos-and-don-ts/

"Indeed, tumble dryers have accounted for 57% of all fires involving white goods in Wales over the last three years (there are on average 158 fires involving white goods in every year)."

Numerous fire services have pages dedicated to tumble dryers and all of the advice is not to leave them unattended so they seem to think that they're dangerous enough.

It isn't difficult to find reports on related fires either

I did a quick Google and it said that they aren’t the number one cause of fires, nor does the government stats page include a specific mention of that That was literally the point of my post

I’m not doubting some fires are caused by them but if we are all about minimising risk, why aren’t you all advising posters to turn off phone charging leads and never use extension cables..?

toomuchlaundry · 08/02/2022 10:17

You shouldn’t charge phones overnight either

HoldingTheDoor · 08/02/2022 10:17

Because the thread is specifically about tumble dryers and washing machines. I don't use chargers overnight either though.

Inspectorslack · 08/02/2022 10:18

Well I know someone whose garage burnt literally to the ground due to one. I have a combined washer dryer and I rarely use the drier I use a rack and I don’t run it if I’m out nor do I run it at night.

SW1amp · 08/02/2022 10:18

@toomuchlaundry

You shouldn’t charge phones overnight either
I’ve heard it all now! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
toomuchlaundry · 08/02/2022 10:23

@SW1amp maybe you should read fire safety advice given out by fire services

www.dsfire.gov.uk/safety/home/top-ways-reduce-your-risk-having-fire-home

This says don’t leave chargers unattended and don’t have tumble dryers on when asleep

TigerLilyTail · 08/02/2022 10:29

The thread was about noise nuisance. I don't think the OP said she was leaving it running while she was asleep.

toomuchlaundry · 08/02/2022 10:31

@TigerLilyTail she says she can sleep through the noise so possibly was running it when asleep

Dyrene · 08/02/2022 10:32

never leave a charging device unattended

Seriously, this is advice given with no thought to how people actually live and behave.

No one is going to sit and watch their phone charging.

There’s no point at all in such impractical and stupid advice. It makes people disregard any sensible or practical advice in there.

etulosba · 08/02/2022 10:36

I know somebody whose washing spontaneously combusted when she left it out on the line overnight.

As to the noise nuisance caused by running a washing machine overnight, my washing machine sounds like a jumbo jet taking off when it is near the end of its cycle. I wouldn’t be too impressed listening to that reverberating through a terrace at midnight.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 08/02/2022 10:36

My washing machine caught fire many years ago. Luckily I was in the flat at the time. I could easily put on washer/dryer over night where we live now however wouldn't dream of it.

If it's unsocial for your neighbours of course you shouldn't.

TigerLilyTail · 08/02/2022 10:36

Well, she said she can sleep through that kind of noise, but I feel we are veering into Pedant's Corner territory here.

My brother burnt his house down after falling asleep drunk with a cigarette in his hand. Definitely don't recommend doing that!

cheekychaplin · 08/02/2022 10:48

I’m not doubting some fires are caused by them but if we are all about minimising risk, why aren’t you all advising posters to turn off phone charging leads and never use extension cables..?

Mostly because the thread is about tumble driers.

Mickarooni · 08/02/2022 10:53

@SW1amp

You don’t have to adhere to it but it’s well known that charging cables overnight is a risk. It’s a risk some people choose to take but some don’t.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 08/02/2022 10:54

Over the years I’ve taken many groups of scouts and guides to fire stations for visits where fire safety is explained

Every single time the fire officers stress that the best way to prevent house fires is not to run washers dryers and dishwashers overnight

As they’re the experts and know the statistics And see the devastation that occurs I don’t question their advice and don’t run these things overnight because I value my families lives

Dyrene · 08/02/2022 10:57

I agree that the paranoid safety advice to sit and watch your tumble drier lest it might blow up and kill everyone is not helpful.

It’s a bit like those threads where someone would ask a question and people would pile in quoting debrett’s etiquette advice as The Law and insisting that, of course, everyone owns fish knives and realises how uncouth it is to slice your roll open and butter it. There seem to be fewer of these than there used to be.

Maybe we could combine the two here. Etiquette on when it’s acceptable to turn a dryer on with fire safety advice of the ‘live in a cold cave without electricity and only eat raw food’ type. Peppered with horror stories about how people know a friend of a friend’s uncle whose dog’s previous owner once had a washing machine that went rogue and had a terminator style killing spree down the local high street.

Aprilx · 08/02/2022 10:58

I live in a terraced house, no I wouldn’t put my washer or dryer on at night if it were upstairs and near a neighbours wall. I am surprised anybody needs to ask that.

I don’t tend to do my washing or drying at 11pm at night, but I would if it wanted to as we are the end terrace and my living room is between where the washing machine is and the neighbours.

Nanny0gg · 08/02/2022 11:00

@SquigglePigs

Our washer and drier are in a utility room the other side of the house to our kitchen and lounge. Even in the day we'd be no where near it to know if there was a problem. I'm not sitting and supervising a tumble drier!
You'll hear and respond to a smoke alarm quicker when you're awake
toomuchlaundry · 08/02/2022 11:01

Don’t think anyone is saying you have to sit and watch a tumble drier or a phone charger, but be in a position to react if there is a problem, which you wouldn’t be if you are asleep in bed

SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 08/02/2022 11:08

Yes it’s anti social. My NDN’s washing machine sometimes wakes us up early in the morning.
