AIBU TO WONDER HOW IN GOD'S NAME PEOPLE WILL BE ABLE TO AFFORD THE INRESE IN ENERGY PRICES

OK this obviously won't affect those who are lucky enough to have money - but - how are those on low incomes/benefit, poor pensioners, etc. ever going to possibly be able to afford the energy price increases? Also the increases will have a knock-on price increase effect on everything we buy - food, clothes ...... I am concerned.

As an ex pat, it’s awful watching what is happening to living standards in the UK. Are any protests planned? People used to march for their rights. Doesn’t seem to happen as much anymore.

If I was in the UK now and young, Id be actively trying to get out. Emigrate. Most countries have their issues, but living standards are far higher in the 2 countries I have lived in since leaving the UK, for the average person.

Yeah well brexit fucked that up didn't it.

And I'm lucky as I have a European partner so we can. Feel so sorry for anyone without that option.

We are giving our jobs another 6 months for stability then looking to get out. We're on the shortage occupations list too...your loss UK.

TheFormidableMrsC · 05/02/2022 21:21

I've refused to up my direct debit, instead paying whatever it is over that amount. The direct debit my energy company suggests is £150 more than I'm using. I don't use the dishwasher, I have the heating on for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. We have blankets and "Oodie" copies from Primark. I've stopped using the tumble dryer except for towels and bed sheets because I can't dry them quickly otherwise. I use the quick wash on the washing machine for lightly worn items. I've cut corners everywhere, meal planning, shopping late for reduced things. I also suspect I am going to have to budget in my ex's pathetic maintenance going to zero at next review. Im so sick of it all.

@Gardeningcreature

We should not have to live like this that is the entire point. Both dh and I work full time. I absolutely should not have to tolerate this shit. I didn’t vote for it. I’ll say it again. You will get the ‘Let’s blame X lazy bastards, they shouldn’t live in a house with central heating/feed their children/own a pair of shoes/own a car/have a phone etc etc etc When will people wake the fuck up. This government have spent BILLIONS on their mates and giving tax payers money to their mates. They do not give one fuck about anyone who has to actually work for a living. If you have had the privilege of attending a private school which cost £23,500 PER YEAR per child plus over £1000 for a uniform, you have no idea, repeat no idea what it will mean to go out to work to earn a living. The thought that some people will not be able to give their children a hot meal or bath them due to the sheer expense is incomprehensible to entitled (usually white middle class males) who are in power. You may as well talk in Chinese for all the comprehension they will have.
Absolutely 100% with you on this 🤬

People have started to use candles for heat and light. This is serious stuff.

FurbleSocks · 05/02/2022 21:24

Mine's gone up by £100 a month. We can cut back on non essentials like days out and the one chip shop trip a week. People whose finances are already cut to the bone are absolutely up shit creek.

It probably costs more to buy a candle than to run a light though.

What the actual fuck?
SuitcaseOfWhine · 05/02/2022 21:31

@PenStation

So what would happen if there is mass non-payment? Which is probably going to happen.
No idea, but if it's a toss up between getting £50 off somebody or asking for £100 and not getting it at all, then I know what I would choose.

I expect that non-payment would have a negative effect on the energy companies if they don't pay and it would be shit if they did go bust, but this might force the government's had to come up with something better. If we just carry on paying then it is only going to get worse.

FurbleSocks · 05/02/2022 21:32

Thedogscollar
This govt have provided no help at all. This £200 direct debit you pay back over 5 years is useless

There is £4.7bn and £8.7bn in the pockets of fraudsters, chancers, MPs friends and price gougers. Why can't they pay it back? If each household has to pay back £200 over 5 years why aren't the government chasing the much bigger sums?

PurpleThursdays · 05/02/2022 21:33

Agree, people need to object to paying an masse for big corporations ans government to take action.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 05/02/2022 21:33

I was in tears last night watching a news report on how this will be even worse for people with disabilities. How do you charge your electric chair less? Or use your CPAP machine less? What happens with your hoist to get in/out of bed if you can't afford electricity. How has one of the richest countries in the world come to this?

Much easier to shit on the little guy than go after their mates. Government are the biggest fraudsters going. They should all be imprisoned.
Akire · 05/02/2022 21:34

Candles you can buy for £1 or two, topping up a meter usually has mim amount be that £10 or £15 so yes candles will work out more than lightbulb but if you only have £2 that’s only option you have. Being poor costs more in every way

Notsandwiches · 05/02/2022 21:39

Yet again those at the bottom of the heap are disproportionately impacted. The £150 council tax reduction won't mitigate the increased energy costs if your income is already so low that you either don't pay council tax or pay very little. It's all part of the great reset agenda: "you will own nothing and be happy". After a few years of this austerity many people will embrace it.

Exactly. People who are going on about people cutting down / switching things off have no understanding of this.

I wish I could uptick this comment a million times.

This is the result of 12 years of Tory rule. Not Brexit (though that's a shambles) not Covid, not sheer bad luck. Its a benefit system that's broken, a living wage that isn't a living wage, and a government so removed from reality that they lay the blame anywhere except where it belongs.

They have choices. They're the ones in power. They could help, but they're deliberately choosing not to.

Anyone who voted for this shower should really be considering their life choices.

What? Who is advocating for full burkas?

Twinkleylight · 05/02/2022 21:49

I'm looking for a full time job now because our 1.5 wage household was just about OK. The energy price rise now means we will struggle. I worked p/t to off set childcare costs but I can't afford the luxury of p/t job now. So many people are in a similar position having to choose between bills and other costs. I spend more time remotely working from the library so I don't have to heat my home.

Sad

This kind of shit would turn me into a activist…

Sitchervice · 05/02/2022 21:51

My husband is seriously considering getting a second job just to pay for heating. Its shit as we have a young baby and can't even afford nursery. We are to ritch for help, but also to poor to fully afford stuff.

Northernsoullover · 05/02/2022 21:52

I actually earn an ok salary. Not huge but more than average. However, I'm a lone parent. Rent is 50% of my salary. Council tax another 200 quid. By the time other bills are paid I'm left with about 200 per month to pay for petrol and food for 3 adults (teens) I'm using the heating max 3 hrs per day. I've just bought a shower timer, we've all got those primark fleece hoodies. I am seriously considering going back to the early 80's sink wash with a flannel. It's pretty shit tbh.
Rents are spiralling in my city. If I ever have to leave my rental I don't know how we will live. Moving isn't an option due to elderly parents. I can't see any hope for the future.
