AIBU TO WONDER HOW IN GOD'S NAME PEOPLE WILL BE ABLE TO AFFORD THE INRESE IN ENERGY PRICES

OK this obviously won't affect those who are lucky enough to have money - but - how are those on low incomes/benefit, poor pensioners, etc. ever going to possibly be able to afford the energy price increases? Also the increases will have a knock-on price increase effect on everything we buy - food, clothes ...... I am concerned.

Rabblesthecat Pah!

It is what it is…….

Just about to buy car number 3

So hoping it’s electric!

So hoping it’s electric!

Why? Is the cost of electricity not the topic here?

felulageller · 05/02/2022 22:55

People will stop having daily showers!

NettleTea · 05/02/2022 22:56

@Bringsexyback

Please do not over pay your gas or electric bill the money needs to be in your bank account earning even a piddling amount of interest rather than British gas or Eon’s earning them friggin millions every day.
my overpayment is in OVO, and due to me being a longtime customer, earning 5% interest per year. Much better than the bank, and for once provided me fortunately a slight cushion to hopefully see me over this huge bump. Ive been overpaying for 5 years though, and its likelyt to all be wiped out in a year. Other than that its about keeping heating down low or off, and keeping consumption as low as I can. Or not buying as much food. I dont do most of the extra stuff people do, swapped car for a cheaper smaller, more relaible one, I dont really know whereelse to cut
Porcupineintherough · 05/02/2022 23:00

@Cissyandflora

I’m very worried. We are freezing in our house. I can’t put the heating on for long because I’m so worried about the bills. My children keep having long luxurious showers and it’s making me so worried about paying. They don’t understand. I know I’m not struggling as much as some. But it’s a big concern. Also prices don’t drop after they have risen.
We have the same problem. Tomorrow I'm buying one of those kitchen timers and in future showers will be 3 min long.
Longingforatikihut · 05/02/2022 23:00

I gave up heating for the most part years ago. I guess I'll start walking the ten mile round trip to work to save the bus fare... Not really got much else I can give up. No subscriptions or paid telly. I work for the NHS and the national insurance increase has negated the 3% payrise we got. Im trying not to panic but I am scared I won't cover everything, lose my home and end up on the streets like i was 10 years ago.

pickledonionsandwine · 05/02/2022 23:03

How long do you think I need my hot water on for ? I think this is increasing my gas usage. I assume it heats water and then stores it during that time. But is it constantly reheating it? I think I have it on 12-2 at lunch so I have hot water to wash up, but would half an hour be enough?

Bunnyfuller · 05/02/2022 23:04

Yep, so wrong I could weep.

We have 45 mins heating in the morning and 2 hrs 4-6 in the evening for the kids getting up and that’s it. We do have a log burner but that is only on some evenings.

DH and I both work full time for the police, both in roles that can be done from home. Blankets, extra jumper, scarf and hat are our work uniform! Have to take a bit off for Teams meetings.

We buy fresh food for the kids and basically live on their leftovers.

Our local FB is still full of mindless morons bugging up theTories, whilst at the same time moaning about the cost of living now. There’s a group on FB called Feed you Family for less. Most of it doesn’t sound super healthy, but egg chips and value beans is hot and warms you up.

Why does this country do it to themselves?

amusedbush · 05/02/2022 23:04

Oh look, I found the Tory.

BreadProductionLine · 05/02/2022 23:04

Single people on benefits get £60-£70 a WEEK to live on after rent. For everything. Food, Gas and Electric, Hygiene, cleaning, household stuff, clothing, internet, and often a bit of council tax or rent has to still be paid.

How is this going to be even possible for some people??!!

People are going to freeze / starve.

Why is this being allowed to happen??!!

Whattochoosenow · 05/02/2022 23:07

@SirChenjins they wouldn’t support the motion because I think they said they were worried about the impact on energy companies and jobs might be lost.

Willyoujustbequiet · 05/02/2022 23:10

People will starve/freeze to death.

I hope you idiots that voted for the Tories are happy. You will reap what you sow.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 05/02/2022 23:11

Not sure what the government will do now Minirza the culture warrior has gone. Maybe they can try the London elites thing again to distract people? That’s worked before.

In France utilities are nationalised so everyone gets the basics like heating and water which should not be for profit but we’ve got a lot of people in the U.K. who will vote to pay obscene profits to companies in order to pay for French kids to get subsidised heating (EDF) whilst their own children are queuing up at the food bank. They can’t be helped and will drag sensible people down with them any chance they get in order to spite others.

PurpleThursdays · 05/02/2022 23:11

@RJnomore1

It’s obvious from the responses to *@tolerable* you lot aren’t good at reading Scot’s and don’t know how bad things are getting up here…and not because of the tories…well not all …
Are you Scottish? Can read your post perfectly well. Tolerable's posts were garbled and made no sense.
earsup · 05/02/2022 23:20

people will stop spending in other areas to keep warm....cut out coffe shops, buy less clothes, eat out less....we will.....i grew up in a cold house and wont be cold and miserable in my retirement so will make savings elsewhere....but less spending in other areas will affect and impact others and business....

sweetbutapshyco · 05/02/2022 23:24

Yes, everything is going to get expensive as you need energy to produce things. And we are not there yet with clean energy yet. This is what happens when you force big energy companies promise to go clean and stop drilling more.

milkyaqua · 05/02/2022 23:31

People will die from hypothermia, particularly older people. I would expect in some numbers. It is absolutely appalling.

RosesAndHellebores · 05/02/2022 23:50

@JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil there is much to recommend France. However, are you not aware that tax rates are eye-watering.

Whattochoosenow · 05/02/2022 23:57

So how’s the situation to be fixed? Tax big business more? Raise personal taxes? If we renationalise energy companies taxes will certainly have to go up to pay for it. Would we be any better off? I genuinely don’t know. It’s a nightmare.

PickAChew · 06/02/2022 00:00

@Notsandwiches

Yet again those at the bottom of the heap are disproportionately impacted. The £150 council tax reduction won't mitigate the increased energy costs if your income is already so low that you either don't pay council tax or pay very little. It's all part of the great reset agenda: "you will own nothing and be happy". After a few years of this austerity many people will embrace it.
Also wondering how much of this councils will be expected to shoulder. Bye bye warm libraries (for the 2 days a week they were open, anyhow)
Usernamepleasework · 06/02/2022 00:19

What works for me is going to bed way before partner to make sure I am in a deep sleep before he comes to bed. I also only have coffee in the morning and no other caffeine after lunch so I fall asleep better and have a better sleep. If he wakes me up I put in Loop Ear Plug (google them) and ask him to lie on his side helps a lot. I feel ur pain I also recorded him one night and let him listen to it in the morning so he knew I wasn’t being dramatic and he has a lot more sympathy. It is torture for sure.

oakleaffy · 06/02/2022 00:20

@ISpyCobraKai

Back to heat or eat. I did it when Dd was little and it was fucking shit.
Same here. House was considered ''Warm'' at 16 DegreesC Breath~ plumingly cold indoors.

Mum's house was often 12Degrees C
Wearing outdoor clothes indoors is so dismal.

She moved to a much smaller house that she could afford to heat.
But doubt that now.

Do you have a ''Combi boiler?''...this way, it only heats the water as you use it, unlike the old water tanks that were lagged.
RosesAndHellebores · 06/02/2022 00:27

@Usernamepleasework I dunno. Early to bed, leave DH in the warm, limit boiling the kettle for coffee - all stacks up on this thread.
