I'm coming to the end of my contract and I need a new handset. My current provider is telling me to get the oldest model of iPhone they have available (but still newer than mine) is a 31% increase per month.

I'm currently paying £35 for an iPhone 8 which I'm happy with but think the price hike for an 11 is a bit ridiculous when it's one of the older models on the market.

£6pm on a 30 rolling contract.

@Chasingsquirrels

£6pm on a 30 rolling contract.
That's SIM only, I always buy the phone upfront.

£35 a month for mine. It worked out cheaper than buying the phone upfront because it was a couple of years ago when phones were silly prices. Will keep it once I have finished the contract.

nannynick · 04/02/2022 11:45

Around £9, SIM only contract, 8GB data, unlimited mins/texts.
Buy the handset outright, then you get whatever one you like. iPhone SE is around £390 if you can still get it. iPhone 11 is around £490.

boringbertha1 · 04/02/2022 11:47

@Maddiemoosmum0203

£39 newest iPhone 24 month contract but it is heavily reduced due to DH work discount on EE
I'll drop in that I'm NHS staff in the live chat because they often offer a discount- hadn't thought of this.

I've just done a quick search and on the same network through another site I can get the phone for less than I'm paying now. I'll bring it up with them and see if they can do anything.

£10 SIM only, phone bought up front for £275. Should last a good 2-3 years, so less than £10 a month for the handset.

Biker47 · 04/02/2022 11:49

£10 a month, bought the phone myself.

BonnesVacances · 04/02/2022 11:51

I paid for my phone up front. Think it was £200. And I pay £7 a month for the SIM but get around half of that refunded each month for unused data.

GunsNShips · 04/02/2022 11:53

I agree - if you can afford to buy a phone upfront you’ll save in the long run. But not always possible to do so. I recently bought a secondhand iPhone 8 for my DD for £50 and then her tariff is £10 pm.

Inthesameboatatmo · 04/02/2022 11:56

15pounds pm. With tesco

VanGoghsDog · 04/02/2022 12:00

£8.49, unlimited text and calls, 5gb data which I don't get near to using. Contract free sim only.

But I buy my own handset and this one was £800.

SockFluffInTheBath · 04/02/2022 12:18

£23.50 for an iPhone 12 mini with unlimited calls & texts and 2gb (we’re all with sky and have masses of data in the piggy bank so I just top up out if that when I need to).

BarbaraofSeville · 04/02/2022 12:20

Look on Moneysaving Expert for advice on cutting mobile costs, including whether it's cheaper to go sim only (usually) or get a contract with phone included (mostly more expensive but every so often there's an anomaly), which where was recently on some type of iphone.

endlesslystandingonlego · 04/02/2022 12:30

I'm on apple upgrade thing, so I pay 45/m for my iPhone 12 (0% finance over 20 months. And then 10/m to giffgaff for sim.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/02/2022 12:32

The other thing to try is to ask for a loyalty discount from your current supplier.

Look up what deals are available to new customers and see if they can match them. Quite often they'll knock a considerable amount off and send you a new phone in return for you sticking with them for another couple of years.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 04/02/2022 12:37

£44 for iPhone 13, £35 for iPhone 12 mini, £27 for iPhone 11, £26 for iPhone XR and £26 for iPhone se. All with EE. (Only one is actually mine, the rest are the dcs phones)

Chishnfips · 04/02/2022 12:38

Currently £20 a month that include the repayment for the handset. When that runs out in November as long as the phone is still working ok I'll go to sim only which will hopefully half that amount.

Forgetaboutme · 04/02/2022 12:43

I pay 65pm! I went a bit nuts at myblast upgrade and chose the newest Samsung with extra memory etc. Phone is still great and I'm due an upgrade soon so I will then go sim only for a year hopefuly which will be much cheaper.

HelloFrostyMorning · 04/02/2022 12:43

£10 a month on a rolling contract. Kinda like pay-as-you-go. I top up with a voucher with a 12 digit pin that I buy once a month. I get unlimited calls, unlimited texts, and 10 gb of data. It's brilliant. I never use more than 2 or 3 gbs. But it's there if I need it.

£65 a month?! Shock

I don't know anyone who has paid that much since the early 2010s!

Ylvamoon · 04/02/2022 12:44

£ 10 sim only, bought phone outright about 5 years ago.

MyGPsurgeryisUseless · 04/02/2022 12:46

£30 a month for unlimited calls, texts and data - is slightly expensive but I’m limited on what network I can have as we get no signal at home on some networks joys of living rurally and this was the best price of the bunch.

Phone was paid for outright

savehannah · 04/02/2022 12:47

Sim only £6 a month. If you can afford the outlay it's always cheaper to buy the phone outright and get a SIM only contract.
