I'm coming to the end of my contract and I need a new handset. My current provider is telling me to get the oldest model of iPhone they have available (but still newer than mine) is a 31% increase per month.

I'm currently paying £35 for an iPhone 8 which I'm happy with but think the price hike for an 11 is a bit ridiculous when it's one of the older models on the market.

£5 sim only, been same for years. Normally but basic smart phones but splashed out and Bought a pixel, think it was £450 outright.

I don't use much data

JaceLancs · 05/02/2022 15:10

£15 a month sim only

Derrymum123 · 05/02/2022 16:06

£12.50 with newish Samsung from Tesco, but I often use my club card points to knock down my phone bill.

£40pm for my iPhone 11 Pro Max and unlimited calls/text/data. Not long left on it (2 year contract) and the phone is still going strong so will go sim only for a while I think.

Although wanted a second phone for my work (own business) a that I could avoid the messages/tweets/alerts at the weekend.

So I got the cheapest smart phone with good reviews on a £10/month PAYG. It was £90 upfront (Oppo) and have to say I'm really impressed with it for such a low price. Perfect for non tech folks or when my DC are old enough for phones. (Although will likely get my cast offs so we can all be Apple)

I pay for the phone separate as most phone and sim contracts are rip offs. £8 a month for sim, I was £15 a month for my phone for 12 months. I'd still be paying the full price if not more currently if I'd gone for a full contract.

£58 a month on the newer iPhone at the time. I don’t know why I did it as my last phone worked fine

OneTC · 05/02/2022 17:37

I buy a 2 year old phone for maximum 200 and use it for a minimum of 2 years. I have a PAYG SIM that gets me 68gb/month, unlimited calls and texts and costs 20 a month. Currently 2 years into my current phone (pixel 3XL) and no real reason to replace it yet

purplecorkheart · 05/02/2022 17:41

I bought my phone outright and use a pay as you go sim. I find buying my phone outright and not tied to a network and paying as I go works out significantly cheaper for me give my phone use and the cost of a similar handset in contract compared to buying outright.

SamphiretheStickerist · 05/02/2022 17:46

£5 month unlimited texts, calls and 2G, which I never use.

I bought a brand new, 5 or 6 times since updated OnePlus6T for about £300. The phone will probably last me 5+ years, just like the last one did. I only be upgraded because I needed a better camera.

Backmarket.co.uk seems decent for second hand refurbished tech at lower prices, for anyone thinking buying the phone outright is too expensive.
