I'm coming to the end of my contract and I need a new handset. My current provider is telling me to get the oldest model of iPhone they have available (but still newer than mine) is a 31% increase per month.

I'm currently paying £35 for an iPhone 8 which I'm happy with but think the price hike for an 11 is a bit ridiculous when it's one of the older models on the market.

Kept my phone when contract ended and got a giffgaff sim, £10 a month with more data than I ever come close to using.

goodwinter · 04/02/2022 12:51

I buy a refurbished phone upfront (think my current one was £2-300 a couple of years ago) and then I pay £10 a month to SMARTY for unlimited texts/calls and 30gb data.

Squidgames4U · 04/02/2022 12:51

£110 a month for an EE family contract for 4 of us. 3 phones (husband kept his old one), 150Gb data between us that I have control of.

saleorbouy · 04/02/2022 12:51

Do you research and find out the high street prices for the model/contract you want.
Ring the cancellation line of the phone company you're with, they'll want to keep your business so will often have good leverage to adjust a contract price to what you want to pay.
Personally I tend to buy a phone and go SIM only it works out better than being on contract.

Newnormal99 · 04/02/2022 12:53

You can get the phone on 2 years interest free from apple and then do sim
Only. Or if you d on t want newest phone go via affordable mobiles or similar as there contracts are way cheaper than going direct to network.

IzzyD0ra · 04/02/2022 13:02

With giffgaff I pay £18.50 + an £8 goodybag for iPhone 12 mini .

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 04/02/2022 13:05

£10 sim only have an iphone 8 I bought second hand a couple of years ago.

InvalidCrumb · 04/02/2022 13:05

If you don't need what is essentially a loan with interest to buy the phone upfront, then I'd do that and go sim-only. £10 per month for all the data i realistically use and calls and texts.

I guess if you want to upgrade all the time a phone contact might be worthwhile.

Stath · 04/02/2022 13:05

I lease from Raylo.

iPhone 11 for £15.99 and I have a Smarty sim for £6. The phones are refurbished (some are new though more expensive) and in excellent nick.
After the term is up you can normally buy the handset for a nominal price.

Works out a lot cheaper than others.

coffeetofunction · 04/02/2022 13:08

About £90 in total for 4 contacts, mine, DH, DS and DD. With EE so we can share data. Hoping to reduce it over summer

LaurieFairyCake · 04/02/2022 13:15

£98 (was newest iPhone 2 years ago) - unlimited everything

ForcingSmiles · 04/02/2022 13:18

Mine is £20 a month , unlimited texts and calls, 120g of Data

Iphone 11 which I bought upfront (I bought through Very as they have a pay in 3 option)

Overandout1 · 04/02/2022 13:19

I used to always upgrade to the newest Samsung Galaxy, I last went to do this 2 years ago and the contract would have been £55!
Until my partner suggested buying a Chinese phone outright and a cheap contract (he's tech savvy).
I bought a Realmex2 2 years ago for £220 and it's amazing, when comparing to the newest Samsung at the time, the Rwalme exceeded the Samsung in every category (better camera etc) and now pay £12 a month Tesco contract for unlimited calls, texts and more data than I ever use.

SartresSoul · 04/02/2022 13:21

£25 a month, iPhone 12 mini with sky.

Blackisblackisblack · 04/02/2022 13:36

EE £5 everything pack: 250 minutes, 500 texts & 250MB data, for 30 days.

Redglitter · 04/02/2022 13:41

I pay £55 a month. That's with Samsung S21, unlimited calls, texts & 40gb data. I also have my 2 nieces phones as part of that so I can share my data with them

Snoozer11 · 04/02/2022 13:46

@GunsNShips

I agree - if you can afford to buy a phone upfront you’ll save in the long run. But not always possible to do so. I recently bought a secondhand iPhone 8 for my DD for £50 and then her tariff is £10 pm.
Surprisingly this isn't always true. You have to shop around and work the costs out yourself.
Summerhillsquare · 04/02/2022 13:48

25 quid a month for 2 years, includes a new Fairphone (repairable, no child labour etc) which is like new still as I approach end of contract. From the Phone Coop.

PickAChew · 04/02/2022 13:49

Another £10, SIM only, unlimited data.

Gladioli23 · 04/02/2022 13:50

@BonnesVacances

I paid for my phone up front. Think it was £200. And I pay £7 a month for the SIM but get around half of that refunded each month for unused data.
@BonnesVacances - who do you use who ffers this? I often don't need all my data but the random months when I do it's really annoying not to have it. Something like this would be ideal for me!
Didioverstep · 04/02/2022 13:52

I pay 31 a month for handset and 25 for sim. I know it's high but it was the newest phone at the time. And it is great fr my line of work. Also connects to my other devices. Coming to an end soon then will switch to sim only which will be about 15 a month

ivegotthisyeah · 04/02/2022 13:58

Get yourself over to sky mobile great deals

uncomfortablydumb53 · 04/02/2022 14:01

MsAgnesDiPesto · 04/02/2022 14:04

Tesco: £10 pcm for a Samsung on a 2 year contract. Includes family perks which brings it down from £11.
