Supermarket clothes as a gift

This morning whilst I was in sainsburys i picked up a really lovely outfit for a friend who has just had a baby, it cost £16.

My mother (who isn't usually pearl clutchy at all) initially said it was "beautiful, so pretty" when I showed her but upon telling her it was from sainsburys she appeared genuinely horrified by the idea that I would then gift it to someone.

I've heard comments before about supermarket clothes as gifts so AIBU to give it as a gift? We're "mum" friends rather than very close friends and to be honest if I were buying something from Next (or A N Other shop approved by my mother) I wouldnt spend much more than £15 anyway.

If it makes any difference I happily dress my own children in supermarket brand clothing and they quite often get comments about how lovely their outfits are!

Perfectly fine OP. Ignore DM.

Anystarinthesky · 03/02/2022 16:51

I don't see anything wrong with that at all.

YellowLemonz · 03/02/2022 16:51

Absolutely fine!
I love supermarket clothes for my own, and regular give gifts from them.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 03/02/2022 16:52

She’s crazy it’s fine

DappledThings · 03/02/2022 16:52

Your mum's being silly. There are lots of nice clothes in supermarkets, especially Sainsbury's in my opinion.

Shamoo · 03/02/2022 16:52

Agree it’s fine. We got some lovely supermarket clothes from family and friends when our baby was born, which were very gratefully received.

Chely · 03/02/2022 16:53

Snobby rubbish, ignore her.
Supermarket clothes are pretty good for all ages.

grapewine · 03/02/2022 16:53

She's being a snob. Ignore.

AuntyJanet · 03/02/2022 16:53

Absolutely fine.

I hate to break it to your mother but supermarket clothes are probably made in the same place, in the same way, as clothes from her approved retailers.

buckeejit · 03/02/2022 16:54

I'd much prefer something from Sainsburys than next

Youdoyoutoday · 03/02/2022 16:59

Nothing wrong with that at all!!

freecuthbert · 03/02/2022 16:59

There's nothing wrong with supermarket clothes. I have been given and gifted supermarket clothes for a baby, and that has never crossed my mind. Sainsbury's do lovely clothes, one of my friends bought me some absolutely beautiful clothes from there when I had a baby and I was so sad when she outgrew them! And I don't think Sainsbury's clothes are cheap at all. My dad is very well off and always buys my daughter clothes from George ASDA, again never crossed my mind until this post. So basically your mum is being a bit mad, maybe it was different when she had kids years ago but supermarket clothes these days are perfectly lovely and fine.

FiveGs · 03/02/2022 17:00

I've never heard of this as a thing Confused

Crack on OP.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 03/02/2022 17:00

Sainsbury's do lovely baby clothes so I can't see the issue at all other than your DM is a bit of a snob. Personally I wouldn't even spend £16 on an outfit for a friend's baby so you're being more than generous. You'd just get less for your money shopping at Next anyway.

Chocomelon · 03/02/2022 17:01

It's absolutely fine

Kopenbergglass · 03/02/2022 17:03

Sainsburys is upmarket.

My babies wore asda clothes.

aunthilda78 · 03/02/2022 17:03

One thing I was completely unprepared for was how obsessed I would become with the Sainsbury's clothing range in my 30's!

So often I'm complimented by people who seem surprised when I say my outfit is from there. Their stuff is lovely.

RunnerDuck2020 · 03/02/2022 17:05

Sainsburys do lovely baby clothes, as do most of the other supermarkets. Definitely don’t worry about it!

spiderlight · 03/02/2022 17:05

Absolutely fine! Sainsbury's kids' clothes are fab - when my DS was little I got loads of lovely colourful things for him there.

Luhou · 03/02/2022 17:06

Absolutely fine.

I love sainsburys baby clothes. I do like premium brand baby clothes too, but my DD wardrobe is mainly boden, jojo, joules and sainsburys and I would love a sainsburys outfit as a gift!

gogohm · 03/02/2022 17:06

It's fine, mine mostly wore Asda clothes

InTheNightWeWillWish · 03/02/2022 17:06

We’ve received loads of clothes from Asda, Morrison’s, Tesco and Sainsbury’s as gifts. We’re grateful for all of them. I haven’t tried Morrison’s yet as they are the next size up for DD but the other 3 are all decent quality, wash well and have really cute designs. Sainsbury’s is my preferred shop at the moment because the fit is so much better for DD.

Piglet89 · 03/02/2022 17:07

Next time your pal has a baby, but a second hand outfit from eBay for it and ensure your mum knows.

Her teeth will fall out from all the gnashing.

NotNowBoris · 03/02/2022 17:09

People have bought me Sainsburys stuff as presents for my kids and it's been really nice. I was actually in there the other week and bought a load of really cute stuff. It would make lovely presents. Maybe I would avoid the other supermarkets for gifts but definitely not Sainsburys, it's really nice stuff.

ChampagneLassie · 03/02/2022 17:10

Nah your mum's being a bit odd. I'm sure you're friend will be very grateful. There was a post on here recently about someone whose friend wanted to return the baby clothes as colours not to her taste! If your friend is a normal decent person she will just thank-you nicely!
