Supermarket clothes as a gift

This morning whilst I was in sainsburys i picked up a really lovely outfit for a friend who has just had a baby, it cost £16.

My mother (who isn't usually pearl clutchy at all) initially said it was "beautiful, so pretty" when I showed her but upon telling her it was from sainsburys she appeared genuinely horrified by the idea that I would then gift it to someone.

I've heard comments before about supermarket clothes as gifts so AIBU to give it as a gift? We're "mum" friends rather than very close friends and to be honest if I were buying something from Next (or A N Other shop approved by my mother) I wouldnt spend much more than £15 anyway.

If it makes any difference I happily dress my own children in supermarket brand clothing and they quite often get comments about how lovely their outfits are!

I love Sainsburys clothes, both for me, DH and my DC when they were younger, much prefer them to Next

Definitely not a problem!
I bought a beautiful outfit for a friend's baby from Sainsburys. She loved it. A couple of years later she sent me a picture and it had been included in her memory bunny that she'd had made. I was so pleased. Plus lovely friend has plenty of money and didn't give two hoots I'm sure!

All gifts were very gratefully received when I had DD. She wore the supermarket stuff often - the pricey stuff I felt like I needed to save for ‘best’ for some reason and most
Of it never got worn

I think it's a generational thing. My DM is on board with supermarket clothes but when I had DD she honestly couldn't believe the difference between supermarket clothes when I was a child and what's on offer now. So potentially that's why your DM was taken aback?

I think Sainsbury's do some lovely children's clothes!

Omg! No way! I still have a gorgeous cotton frock outfit that my daughter was gifted 24 years ago! And in truth, i work in fancy offices in SE1 London and id say.. 60%of my outfits are supermarket based, mostly Sainsbury's, and .. I think they look good, people who have a problem with this need to check themselves maybe..

I like Sainsbury’s clothes and would be pleased to receive this gift.
But you know your friend the best. Will she be likely to like it? It doesn’t really matter what your DM thinks.

I've had a a baby recently and got given clothes from everywhere. I can't say I'm bothered if they are from the supermarket or not although I do prefer Morrisons limited stuff to Sainsburys. I don't tend to buy my kids clothes from supermarkets myself though I'd only usually get basics and pjs.

Yanbu, I'm sure the gift will be appreciated.

Wow...I don't think I've gifted any baby clothes not from the supermarket...they great quality. My mum is abit strange re this. I was grateful for all DD clothes she was gifted which 99.9÷ was from the supermarket
