Supermarket clothes as a gift

This morning whilst I was in sainsburys i picked up a really lovely outfit for a friend who has just had a baby, it cost £16.

My mother (who isn't usually pearl clutchy at all) initially said it was "beautiful, so pretty" when I showed her but upon telling her it was from sainsburys she appeared genuinely horrified by the idea that I would then gift it to someone.

I've heard comments before about supermarket clothes as gifts so AIBU to give it as a gift? We're "mum" friends rather than very close friends and to be honest if I were buying something from Next (or A N Other shop approved by my mother) I wouldnt spend much more than £15 anyway.

If it makes any difference I happily dress my own children in supermarket brand clothing and they quite often get comments about how lovely their outfits are!

Is your Mum Hyacinth Bucket?

Mommabear20 · 03/02/2022 17:16

I love supermarket clothes! They usually wash well and can go in the dryer (a big park when they're being spit up on our pooped on daily!) and are cute and comfortable! Wouldn't bother me in the slightest!

ProfessorPlumb · 03/02/2022 17:17

Sainsburys do lovely kids clothes, I'd be very pleased to receive it

Mrsjayy · 03/02/2022 17:22

Sainsbury's have gorgeous baby clothes I've bought a few baby gifts from there and asda babies are in clothes for such a short time,. Your mum is being a snob.

Tiramysu · 03/02/2022 17:24

Ignore her

(And buy her next present from a supermarket)

Camomila · 03/02/2022 17:25

Perfectly fine, I've given and received supermarket and Primark baby clothes as presents.

MsFannySqueers · 03/02/2022 17:35

As PP have said Sainsburys do some really lovely clothes. I had a linen skirt from Sainsburys. I wore it for years when I was teaching. It was just the right length, flattering fit and it went with loads of different tops. It washed and ironed like a dream. Did I once work with your DM? I only ask because a colleague once admired the excellent skirt. ‘Oh Sainsburys’ I told her. Another colleague looked up in the staff room and said with horror ‘I would rather die than wear clothes bought from Sainsburys’! I have never forgotten it. I still bloody loved that skirt.

I’ve not long had a baby and the overwhelming majority of the gifts I received were from supermarkets. The clothes are lovely. And some aren’t cheap at all. The only thing is you tend to get duplicates but it’s easy enough to take back and swap for something different or in a bigger size.

Your mum is being a snob.

Hockeyboysmum · 03/02/2022 17:46

Agree sainsbury is upmarket. Ive bought baby toddler clothes in lidl

justasking111 · 03/02/2022 17:49

Tu clothing is lovely and unlike Next doesn't shrink or fade

TheGoogleMum · 03/02/2022 17:50

You can get lovely clothes from supermarkets! I have been happy to receive supermarket clothes as gifts for DD

Anonymum30 · 03/02/2022 17:50

You chose a lovely present for your friend, don't overthink it Smile

NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/02/2022 17:50

It's not as if we can give presents from Mothercare anymore.

Numnumcookie · 03/02/2022 17:51

Nothing wrong with supermarket clothes.

The Tu ones fit our little boy lovely. Some of the best ones we had and good quality.

EishetChayil · 03/02/2022 17:53

My mum is snobby like this. It's ridiculous!

Some of my favourite clothes for DD - and the ones I've kept aside for #2 - are Sainsbury's.

SheWolfOFFrancee · 03/02/2022 17:55

Ignore her!

Sainburys and Asda do beautiful stuff and it washes / lasts much better than some of the more expensive “brand” stuff we’ve got.

Tesco also have beautiful stuff but we only have a small store so don’t get all of their lines

DrSbaitso · 03/02/2022 17:58

It's fine but why tell her where they came from at all?

girlmom21 · 03/02/2022 18:01

Almost all the clothes we've been gifted are from Asda, Sainsburys or Tesco. We get the occasional Next or Matalan outfit but the supermarket ones are longer lasting.

Mulhollandmagoo · 03/02/2022 18:02

My toddler has been kitted out in supermarket clothes since day one 🤣 it's perfectly fine, your friend will think nothing of it and be really grateful for the gift I imagine.

Carpedimum · 03/02/2022 18:05

Unnecessarily & shamefully snobby.

ultrablue · 03/02/2022 18:05

Tesco have some lovely baby clothes in at the moment. I just need a baby to buy them for.. No DGC yet 🙂

sadpapercourtesan · 03/02/2022 18:07

Your mum's a snob. I'd troll her mercilessly tbh - give her Happy Shopper washing up liquid for Christmas etc.

elbea · 03/02/2022 18:08

I don’t like a lot of baby clothes from supermarkets that have slogans and cartoons on but Sainsbury’s do lovely clothes. If your mum is worried I’m pretty sure Prince George has been pictured in Sainsbury’s clothes…

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/02/2022 18:10

Your DM is nuts. Sainsbury's do really nice baby clothes, some great designs and they wash well.

Jfb23 · 03/02/2022 18:33

I think sainsburys clothes are generally nicer than asda or tesco. But even with that in mind, if someone bought my baby a gift, it really wouldn't bother me where it was from.
