I am not talking about conspiracies here that can't be proven with a bit of digging but more false stuff that seems to stick in the minds of the general population as truths.

  1. All/majority of lotto winners go broke after 5 years. I have seen this touted out a lot yet there is no known source of it as no such research exists. There is the handful of bad stories that are circulated but this is only a minority out of 1000s of big winners worldwide. Infact, I recall the tabloids doing a feature with winners to celebrate Camelot's 20th anniversary or so and many winners had said their lives were better.
  1. Marriage means all assets are split 50/50. Another huge misconception.
  1. Prenups will protect 1 in divorce- again I think 2 and 3 come from people watching tv shows and movies that use this as factual when it's not.
  1. Elvis sings 'Lonely this Christmas.'
  1. The capital of Brazil is Rio.

@LifeIsBusy

Babies sleep all night 🧐
Right, babies are meant to sleep all night. They are naturally going to wake up to check they are safe and feed. Adults don't even sleep all night.

Many moons ago when homeless people got Supplementary Benefit- they did receive extra money for having a dog. I think it was 27p a week extra. This was over 30 years ago though.

Staffy1 · 02/02/2022 20:59

That it makes any difference which party is running the country.

That vellus hair becomes terminal hair if you shave it.

That Marie Antoinette said the ‘let them eat cake’ quote - it was brioche and at the time Rousseau said it happened, she was still a child.

Is it not? Not that I’ve ever done it…definitely wouldn’t do it after a boyfriend left…😬
KarenTheGammonRemoaner · 02/02/2022 21:00

@Clymene

That giving children sugar makes them hyper
It does mine as she's not used to it. Unless she's putting it on, but why would she and how would she know to? Skittles do it for me, if I eat a bag I get the shakes as I don't eat much processed sugar.

@NewarkShark

That rape victims can be questioned about what they were wearing, or their sexual history (very limited circumstances, but so many people think it’s routine in rape trials).
The victim will already have been asked these things by the Police who will have passed the info to the CPS who will use it as a reason not to proceed if they possibly can.

@ceilingfaninmyspoon

Any issues in the workplace can be solved with a visit to HR
Who believes that?
HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 02/02/2022 21:01

@HeyBlaby

That carbs make you fat. Aspartame causes cancer. Chronic Lyme disease. The police decide whether to charge or that an individual can decide to 'press charges'.
Aspartame is associated with an increased risk of dementia. It actually IS.

Not if they all report to a central authority that oversees everything.

@LittleBoPeepHasLostHerShit

That gluten is "bad for you" even if you don't have coeliac disease.
Oh this x 20. I inadvisably got into a row on YouTube (I know) about this.

That Godparents get your kids if you die.

JinxandBinx · 02/02/2022 21:04

Defibrillators send an electric shock to your heart, but will only work during a cardiac arrest if the heart is in certain rhythms - there needs to be some electrical activity. Flatlining (Asystole) means there is no electrical activity, so the defib will do nothing.
I’ve been involved in quite a few cardiac arrests, never used the defib to shock anyone
