I am not talking about conspiracies here that can't be proven with a bit of digging but more false stuff that seems to stick in the minds of the general population as truths.

  1. All/majority of lotto winners go broke after 5 years. I have seen this touted out a lot yet there is no known source of it as no such research exists. There is the handful of bad stories that are circulated but this is only a minority out of 1000s of big winners worldwide. Infact, I recall the tabloids doing a feature with winners to celebrate Camelot's 20th anniversary or so and many winners had said their lives were better.
  1. Marriage means all assets are split 50/50. Another huge misconception.
  1. Prenups will protect 1 in divorce- again I think 2 and 3 come from people watching tv shows and movies that use this as factual when it's not.
  1. Elvis sings 'Lonely this Christmas.'
  1. The capital of Brazil is Rio.

" Als Faustregel gilt: Etwa ein Drittel der Infizierten erkrankt mit den genannten Symptomen, ein Drittel zeigt eine mildere Symptomatik (wie bei Erkältungskrankheiten) und ein Drittel entwickelt gar keine Symptome." www.rki.de/SharedDocs/FAQ/Influenza/FAQ_Liste.html
One third of flu cases have typical flu symptoms, one third milder symptoms similar to that of a cold, and one third none at all. Says the RKI.

CellophaneFlower · 03/02/2022 12:15

@JuergenSchwarzwald Covid is like flu in the way it can be serious enough to kill or you might not know you even have it.

Of course studies into flu have been done before, hence they know you can have the flu and be asymptomatic.

Do I win the flipflops/driving thing by having been in a helicopter where both pilots were wearing flipflops?

Doesn't the fact that you're alive serve to back up the argument that it's ok to drive in flip flops?

I don't even hoover in flip flops.

If you work part time it's better to work Mondays because you get more time off than a part timer who doesn't work Mondays

In my office it definetly is, our holiday entitlement makes no allowances for BH so several colleagues who get the same annual salary as me, get 7 days off more than me and we all get 4.5 weeks. One of the reasons I am, leaving management say "tough luck"

That rape victims can be questioned about what they were wearing, or their sexual history (very limited circumstances, but so many people think it’s routine in rape trials).

There is no such thing as "Irish American". Or "French American", Scottish American" or "Japanese American".

Michael Flatley was born and raised in South Chicago and is American.

That he had built a successful career on his talent for Irish dancing and entertainment doesn't alter this.

There was a thread on here recently about the term African American being valid. I think you are denigrating people’s heritage by saying that they are American (or whatever nationality) Michael Flatley absolutely can use Irish American given his parents were Irish. I’m not convinced he would have become an Irish dancer had his heritage been different. He would have grown up with Irish traditions, food, hearing the accent constantly. The law says that you can apply for an Irish passport if your grandparent was Irish.

Cows milk made for their calf is completely normal for grown adults to consume It's as normal as anything else. Most people, at least in the west, have the enzyme necessary to digest cows' milk, and it has been consumed for thousands of years. Few things are made to be consumed, except fruit. Whether or not it is ethical to intensively rear cows for milk production is, of course, another matter.

The word 'normal' is so nuanced that it's practically meaningless.

Flu is asymptomatic in the majority. People like to say "I've never had flu" or "it can't be flu, you're too well" and both statements are likely untrue. If three quarters of flu cases are asymptomatic, you wouldn't know you had it and often, it's v mild. Not to deny it can be v serious but that's not the majority experience.

Halloween is not an American import.

It's rooted in Celtic tradition

I think most people mean 'trick or treat' not Halloween

That Marilyn Monroe was a size 16, or a size between 12-16

(Her measurements were recorded post mortem as bust 35, waist 22, hips 35, and her film costumes are usually displatpyed on a modern size 2 mannequin)

I always thought she was a 10 to 12

You can catch a cold by being cold.... Out your jumper or you'll catch a cold. Drives me insane

you can catch a chill and I suppose if you get really cold your immune system might be weakened.

I have definitely caught chills, once by sitting underneath a cold aircon unit. But you don't for example get a cold by going out with wet hair!

what is a chill? I have never seen a medical definition of it?

That the way to cure obesity in society is to tell overweight people to eat less and exercise more.
It is good advice though, Obviously there isn't a simple cure or nobody would be obese unless they wanted to be X
catscatscurrantscurrants · 03/02/2022 12:49

Re: Marilyn Monroe's measurements - 35, 22, 35 - modern standard sewing pattern sizes have a bust of 35" as between a modern size 12 and 14. In the 1950s pattern sizes were different, and a 35" bust would have been between a 14 and 16. So the belief about her dress size isn't a myth.

Sugar gives you diabetes…. um… no. People with diabetes have an inability to metabolise the spike in their blood sugar after eating or drinking virtually anything because their pancreas is either producing insufficient insulin or none at all.

The world is not flat and Australia really DOES exist. (I’m standing on it right now. *poke poke poke)

Just because you have the right to HAVE an opinion, even if it IS the right one, doesn’t mean that everyone HAS to listen to it.
