I am not talking about conspiracies here that can't be proven with a bit of digging but more false stuff that seems to stick in the minds of the general population as truths.

 1. All/majority of lotto winners go broke after 5 years. I have seen this touted out a lot yet there is no known source of it as no such research exists. There is the handful of bad stories that are circulated but this is only a minority out of 1000s of big winners worldwide. Infact, I recall the tabloids doing a feature with winners to celebrate Camelot's 20th anniversary or so and many winners had said their lives were better.
 1. Marriage means all assets are split 50/50. Another huge misconception.
 1. Prenups will protect 1 in divorce- again I think 2 and 3 come from people watching tv shows and movies that use this as factual when it's not.
 1. Elvis sings 'Lonely this Christmas.'
 1. The capital of Brazil is Rio.

That food handlers/workers should wear gloves because it's more hygienic. Wrong, it's actually the opposite!

That dogs are can't see colour (they can).

WhoppingBigBackside · 02/02/2022 22:10

@ghostyslovesheets, muscle does weigh more than fat.

EarringsandLipstick · 02/02/2022 22:11

@SnackSizeRaisin

You can tell if an egg is off by seeing if it floats
This, while not infallible, is a good basic check

It's not about 'being off', it's about freshness.

A very fresh egg will sink to the bottom & lie on its side. A egg that floats has been permeated and is no longer fresh. It may not be 'off' but is not advisable to eat or use in baking.

Defiantly, surely? Grin
proopher · 02/02/2022 22:12

@Interviewdisaster

That Kansas City is in Kansas when it is actually in Missouri

Actually it’s in both as it straddles that state border. It also has an amazing art museum.

I think the 52 states comes from people adding Alaska and Hawaii to the 50 states, when they’re included, or from counting US territories like Puerto Rico and Samoa as states.

Hawaii and Alaska are part of the 50 states, not additional to it
StellaGibs · 02/02/2022 22:12

That babies need sleep training. Nah, theyre just being babies. Its you who needs training to accept it.

proopher · 02/02/2022 22:14

@Interviewdisaster actually, I think I misread your post!

lightisnotwhite · 02/02/2022 22:14

proopher Yeah that’s what Interviewdisaster said.

PotatoGoblins · 02/02/2022 22:15

@StellaGibs totally onboard with that sentiment.
Western societies have a really weird concept that normal infant behaviour is a problem to be fixed Confused
@ghostyslovesheets, muscle does weigh more than fat.
Of course it doesn't!

A pound of anything is the same as a pound of anything else!

So 1lb of fat weighs the same as 1lb of muscle - the difference is density.

Muscle takes up less space than fat, because it is less dense. Therefore at the same weight, your composition based on fat or muscle will be very different

comfortablyfrumpy · 02/02/2022 22:17

@OhWhyNot

That Blackheath was a mass grave in the time of the plague
I always thought it was - and the hill opposite Horniman Museum. Just had a look and see I am wrong on both counts!

Correction: it most likely is not off and is perfectly fine to eat. You will know if it's off as soon as you crack it open! Freshness is only really relevant if you want to poach it. Not for hard boiling or baking with etc

Don't bother saving for retirement as you may never get there...
In fairness, some people don't.
WhoppingBigBackside · 02/02/2022 22:19

@EarringsandLipstick, what I said is true. A pound of one thing weighs the same as a pound of something else but by volume, muscle weighs more than fat.

Similarly a litre of milk weighs more than a litre of water.

ExtraPlinky · 02/02/2022 22:20

Skilovingmama · 02/02/2022 22:20

Yeah and that’s what people mean when they say it weighs more. Obviously. It’s just idiots who then pipe up and say ‘but a pound of x weighs the same as a pound of y’. No shit, Sherlock. I think most people do know that a pound is a unit of measurement. The point is that muscle is heavier per square centimetre.

MagpiePi · 02/02/2022 22:20

@ghostyslovesheets

female cats/dogs need to have 1 litter muscle weighs more than fat
I foolishly tried to explain the concept of density to someone who was defiantley (Grin) sure that muscle was heavier than fat. She also believed that a pound of lead was heavier than a pound of feathers.
shortroundd · 02/02/2022 22:20

That Michael Flatley is Irish-American born and bred.

Mel Gibson is Australian, Olivia Newtown John is Australian or I think a lot of people back in the day believed Mother Teresa was Irish.

surely you mean that muscle takes up less room than fat because it is MORE dense?
