Have you mistaken flat white to mean simple white and you actually want to order a white coffee?

IntermittentParps · 02/02/2022 14:05
@intermittentParps in Greece a dusting of cinnamon powder is traditional on latte and cappuccino. Imagine the guys face if u asked for that one haha
Quite tempted to try Grin
I didn't know that about cinnamon in Greek coffee. I am quite partial to cinnamon, chocolate AND vanilla but haven't come across anywhere offering all three for years.

HootOwl · 02/02/2022 14:08

I find all of the coffee labels really confusing. Surely there an infinite number of ways and proportions for drinking it? Much better to make it at home then you can have it exactly how you like and don't have to navigate these nonsense labels.

I make myself an iced coffee first thing every morning. Ice, large glass of milk and a triple espresso. No idea what that is supposedly called!

SamphiretheStickerist · 02/02/2022 14:10

I would guess that what you actually mean to order is an Americano with milk ?

Cloudfrost · 02/02/2022 14:11

@intermittentParps I believe its because when the fancy coffees from abroad first got fashionable in Greece, cinammon was cheaper than chocolate, especially since cinammon is a very popular ingredient for cooking so everyone has it in Abundance, or at least that's what I was told when I lived there. These days u are offered both cinnamon and chocolate as a dusting option, with mostly the younger generations going for the chocolate

BarbaraofSeville · 02/02/2022 14:11

Is the milk in white Americanos hot or cold as standard?

I like my coffee properly hot, so I'd need an Americano with hot milk, to be able to drink it.

OneTC · 02/02/2022 14:12

"No idea what that is supposedly called!"

If you asked for an espresso over ice in most places this is what you'll get. You would need to specify the number of shots

Cold, I'd say, but some places will give the option of hot. And I'd imagine if you ask, most cafes would oblige.

The poster has milk too, though. I'd think 'an iced coffee' would get you approximately what she describes. Might have to specify the three shots though.

How interesting!

What if you want cinnamon AND chocolate like I would ? Do you get escorted firmly out? Grin

SamphiretheStickerist · 02/02/2022 14:16

I don't have milk but you could ask for it to be heated. They heat milk all the time, it wouldn't be odd ...

OneTC · 02/02/2022 14:17

Yeah I missed that somehow sorry Grin

/Replaces pp's drink

I seem to remember having an espresso over ice (lovely elegant-looking drink) in a Spanish place in London and it had a name. Can't remember it though.
Cloudfrost · 02/02/2022 14:21

@intermittentParps I think u would only get a weird look if u asked for something outlandish like milk alternatives or gluten free 😂
They are a bit behind in some things sadly

IntermittentParps · 02/02/2022 14:29

Ah, yes, I am an oat milk person. Might have to stay quiet about that and just have dairy Grin

It’s quite normal for people to ask for hot milk with an americano and it makes no difference to me to make it that way. Just ask.
Nutsohazelnuts · 02/02/2022 14:51

it’s only really us and the US that have this weird penchant for huge bowls of sweetened nursery-style milky drinks

Actually, in Russia and parts of Eastern Europe they’re very keen on Raf/Raph (раф) coffee which is certainly quite nursery-style. From Wikipedia:

‘Prepared by adding cream and vanilla sugar to a single shot of espresso and then foaming the mix with a steam heater. The main differences from latte are the use of vanilla sugar and cream instead of milk and the fact that the whole mix is foamed together instead of just milk. Syrup is often used instead of vanilla sugar.’

God, that sounds delicious and quite addictive!

@BuickMcKane

Flat white from the coffee shop I go to is the same size as the rest of the coffees.
Well they're doing it wrong then.
IntermittentParps · 02/02/2022 15:08

Yep, as is anyone who gives size options for flat whites; properly, they come in just the one size.

Hankunamatata · 02/02/2022 15:50

Ask for 2 extra shots in latte

mixum · 02/02/2022 17:12

Just another small thing.... it must be the way it's made, or the machinery, and/or the blend that makes Italian/Greek/French coffee so nice. I don't think they grow coffee beans in those places do they? So they are not really "Italian" coffee as such.

Nevertheless, and I don't mean to split hairs or anything, but cafe au lait in France for breakfast is often served in a bowl or a large wide cup. Dip the croissant in it and voila. Gorgeous.

IntermittentParps · 02/02/2022 17:20

Yes, I thought that cafe au lait was pretty milky.

RussiasGreatestLoveMachine · 02/02/2022 17:26

You’d have my husband mithering now! An Americano is a black coffee. I don’t meet his eye when someone says, “with or without milk”

Right, an Americano is a black coffee.

But it’s also the only option for people who prefer milk in their coffee, but don’t want steamed or frothed or too much milk.

So - an Americano with milk in it is - an Americano with milk.
