To ask why you only get half a cup of coffee when you order a flat white

I have to order two

Well thankyou for posting this! DH has the same complaint. Sometimes they do make a large sometimes they don't. I'll start asking for a latte with an extra shot from now on

Booksandwine80 · 02/02/2022 12:04

Ooh I love a flat white. Latte, no thanks 🤢

ShowOfHands · 02/02/2022 12:11

Latte's are for people that don't really like coffee

Are you one of those people who also wangs on about how other people should have their steak.

Ozanj · 02/02/2022 12:17

Flat whites are for people who like proper Italian style cappuccinos - small, strong with minimal milk. That’s why they were created because cappuccinos in the UK have become milkier and milkier.

Etinoxaurus · 02/02/2022 12:21

@Mozzie123

I ought to report you for that! As an Australian, a flat white is most certainty NOT a small latte.
I agree. I’m also slightly worried about how affronted I was by the description. OP don’t try a cortado.
Cloudfrost · 02/02/2022 12:25

Lattes are mostly for people who either live milk or not that keen on the taste of coffee 😂
I am not keen on milk but I dislike the taste of coffee, but sometimes I just need the caffeine, so latte is a drinkable option for me.
Will miss the point of this thread and enrage coffee livers by saying my favourite drink is a mocha (which is the live child of coffee and hot chocolate) and I ask for whipped cream on top and add 2 sugars to it. Sometimes u ask for caramel syrup in it as well when I feel extra tired, the combination of sugar rush and coffee rush perks me right up Blush

My ex, who is a coffee addict, would always give me dirty looks about my "glorified dessert in a cup"

Although the very best coffee I ve ever had was in Greece, called freddoccino, which is basically a coffee slushie

Honeyroar · 02/02/2022 12:33

Why are people so snobby about coffee?? There’s something for everyone. It really doesn’t matter whether you get asked if you want milk in your Americano! I own a coffee shop and 80% of people ordering americanos want them white. I have a regular who asks for marshmallows on her cappuccino, another who has chocolate dust on her latte. It really doesn’t matter. There shouldn’t be all this eye rolling, and people shouldn’t feel like they can’t go to a coffee shop because they don’t know what they want! It’s just a coffee! I have a lot of people tell me roughly what they want and I steer them towards the nearest thing. And if the say they want a simple/normal/plain white coffee they generally get an americano with milk.

swapsicles · 02/02/2022 12:37

Might sound odd but give dunelm coffee shops a try, they do have lovely coffee in my local and always happy to oblige if you have no idea which type of coffee you like, they use 2 shots in all the coffees which suits me fine, the flat white is great there, if I do go to Costa I'll have a cortado, but find the coffee bitter sometimes.

Deux · 02/02/2022 12:47

Question for those in the know. My favourite coffee is a cortado followed by a flat white, especially my local Cafe Nero. Is there a coffee that is double the volume of a cortado? So like 2 cortados in one glass? Or would a flat white with an extra shot be similar?

Caerulea · 02/02/2022 12:49

@Cloudfrost Here's a fun fact, I own a coffee shop & IME mochas are overwhelmingly ordered by/for men & there's no shame in that. Honestly a mocha with whipped cream etc just sounds like a cupful of smiles to me.

SoupDragon · 02/02/2022 12:49

it’s only really us and the US that have this weird penchant for huge bowls of sweetened nursery-style milky drinks.

"Nursery style"?

Absolutely this!

OneTC · 02/02/2022 12:58

@Cloudfrost

Going by what you seem to enjoy give an affogato a go

Caerulea · 02/02/2022 13:00

@OneTC

The reason I stopped selling filter at my place was twofold - if it didn't sell (which it largely didn't) then it would have to be thrown away & started again to probably not sell more than a couple of cups. It made no sense to have the machine sat on all day for a couple of cups of coffee.

Second thing was space, I put a grinder in its place so we could have fresh ground, good decaf (which is considerably more expensive than filter 😭) which there just wasn't room for before.

OneTC · 02/02/2022 13:05

Makes sense

If you hadn't considered it and you want to add it back in at minimal cost and space consider the V60 route, or clever coffee dripper maybe? Looks great on the counter, generates interest, made fresh for every cup so no wastage

IntermittentParps · 02/02/2022 13:08

Yes, it's about the proportions. It's if you want the foam of a cappuccino with not as much milk as one of those or a latte.
Although I think (?) flat whites are also frothed/foamed in a specific way to produce a specific texture; they're meant to be velvety, whereas cappuccinos are often quite 'airy' and lattes more about hot steamed milk with just a layer of foam on top.

I know what you mean, though, OP: I love a flat white for texture and strength reasons, but they can seem to be over a bit too quickly Grin
Maybe try a latte or cappuccino with an extra shot, although be careful if it's a place where they use two shots as a matter of course and your tolerance is not that high!

Years ago when new in London, I went into an old-school Italian cafe in Soho and ordered a latte. I asked for chocolate dust and the guy looked at me like I'd asked him to spit in it Grin

I will drink any kind of coffee, filter, espresso, latte, flat, instant, you name it, but it is NEVER hot enough for me from a shop!

I dream often of a simple Cafe con leche served in Spain, mmm gorgeous.

Have you tried asking for extra-hot? Sometimes IME they go over the top and it ends up scalding, but for a flat white, which baristas tend to make not that hot, it generally works. I have to say I've never really had good coffee in Spain. Italy and Denmark, yes.
mixum · 02/02/2022 13:32

IntermittentParps

Thanks for the tip about asking for extra hot!

I think the Spanish coffee is great, probably a remembrance of sunny times though, and it is hot to my liking also. All good.

Honeyroar · 02/02/2022 13:53

@IntermittentParps (fab name!) you’ll have to come to my coffee shop then!😄

Yes, food/drink is so often tied to fond memories. I do remember a tiny, scruffy cafe in a run-down bit of Rome when DP and I went years ago (we could only afford a cheap hotel in said bit of Rome). Cafe round the corner, full of workmen and cleaning women etc, did cappuccino and a croissant for 1 euro in the mornings. It remains the best cappuccino and croissant I've EVER had Smile

Love to! Where are you?
I'm a flat white drinker now, not latte; but I bet you wouldn't mind if I asked for chocolate dust (or even marshmallows) in one Grin

YellowbellyLass · 02/02/2022 14:00

I was introduced to flat whites in Oz by my BIL. Struggle to get a good one in the UK but I've found some indies are getting better at it Smile

Cloudfrost · 02/02/2022 14:00

@caerulea that's cool to know, though ex criticisms was due to him liking his coffee bitter like his mood 😂

@OneTC thank you for the suggestion, I will give it a try next time I am in the big city near me, local town has only got a Costa and some independent cafes with just basic hot drinks sadly

Cloudfrost · 02/02/2022 14:02

@intermittentParps in Greece a dusting of cinnamon powder is traditional on latte and cappuccino. Imagine the guys face if u asked for that one haha
