To ask why you only get half a cup of coffee when you order a flat white

I have to order two

I've had to stop going to coffee shops because of all the pressure when in line and the options I no longer understand. Always thought a flat white a regular home style coffee.

Also, I loved lattes but spotted getting them when I read that they're usually made with coffee and full fat cream (no milk, no water!).

What would I order if I wanted a coffee made entirely with milk? Latte or Cappuccino? What's the difference between the two?

Coffee made entirely of milk is a latte - caffe latte translates as milky coffee.

Cappuccino is generally a bit more frothy.

Subway is the same. WTF are all the bread types with names that give no information about what sort of bread it actually is.

They look like a sandwich shop but if you go in there and ask for a ham salad on white, they look at you as if you've just dropped in from Mars, because you didn't give them the special bread type code word or say yes or no to individual ingredients in the correct order.

@trunktoes do keep an eye on the caffeine level - a regular size Costa flat white has more caffeine than 3 cans of red bull. If you’re having two flat whites together that’s a pretty unhealthy amount of caffeine :(

SoupDragon · 02/02/2022 09:17

You’re one poster, and you want an Americano that is black, to actually be white

So, an Americano with milk. ie a black coffee with milk added. I don't see the problem really. No different to adding a flavoured syrup to a standard drink really.

Caerulea · 02/02/2022 09:26

@Cocomarine

Tbf to the person asking that of your hubby - since filter coffee went out of fashion, there's no word for what is essentially 'just a normal coffee', which is essentially an Americano with milk in terms of proportions.

I've made 1000's of coffees & trust me, it's harder for the person making them cos we have to work out what ppl are talking about half the time 😂. If you assume the order for an Americano is black you'll get complained at more often than not - so it's always best to ask.

trunktoes · 02/02/2022 09:27

I used to love a filter coffee

Thanks for the advice to order a Americano with space for milk!

I agree about all the silly names. I think they do it to make it seem elitist. I also dislike 'grande' etc. In an actual Italian cafe I'd not mind but Starbucks isn't Italian.

I rarely go to coffee shops as it is, and try to avoid the chains when I do but they're sometimes the only option.

BrimFullOfAsher · 02/02/2022 09:38
Hmm

As said already, that's the point of a flat white. Anywhere that does different sized flat whites are just selling you a latte.

Lattes (for me) are way to much milk, so a flat white is ideal. Or, if I want a bigger cup, then a latte with an extra shot is the closest to doubling a flat white I've found.

And for a PP - cappuccino should be 1/3 espresso, 1/3 milk and 1/3 foam shouldn't it?

OfstedOffred · 02/02/2022 10:02

Any of the latte/cappuccino/flat white type drinks has too much milk for me.

I like a strong american with just a normal amount of milk - like 1 ounce .

OneTC · 02/02/2022 10:05

It's a short drink that mostly gets murdered by UK chain coffee shops who put it into too big cups. The newish "mini" sized drinks in Costa for example are actually the correct size for a flat white, up until then they'd just been making lattes

If they give you half a cup full it's cos their cups are too big

Piccolo 👍

OfstedOffred · 02/02/2022 10:06

I also like a cafe crema - like a longer version of an espresso, then I add milk.

gunnersgold · 02/02/2022 10:07

Harris and Hoole do a large flat white , it has 4 shots in it ! Tripping all day ! 🤣🤣

OneTC · 02/02/2022 10:10

I wouldn't say they're out of fashion they are inconvenient for chain places to make

Plenty good coffee shops make filter coffee

OfstedOffred · 02/02/2022 10:13

But then
... [embarrassing confession]

I dont really understand why filter coffee went out of fashion.

OneTC · 02/02/2022 10:16

Filter coffee uses more coffee, much more coffee. You can't charge much more for it because there's a ceiling on what people pay for a given size of coffee

Convincing someone they want an Americano means you have less equipment to maintain and you can sell them an equivalent drink with a better protected margin on it. Also less training, less knowledge, less cost for the company.

If you go to Monmouth coffee for example then a significant chunk of what they sell is filter

ISmellBurnings · 02/02/2022 10:17

I hardly ever drink tea outside my own home as it is just so disappointing. I love tea but it has to be just right

I agree, tea is usually so disappointing and I don’t drink coffee.

Usually with tea you get the teabag dunked in quickly and then a ton of milk resulting in dishwater. It’s undrinkable. I like properly brewed tea. I’d rather make it myself.

SartresSoul · 02/02/2022 10:22

As everyone else has said, it’s always served in a smaller cup because it’s like a milky espresso. Get a latte or cappuccino if you want a larger coffee.

TempsPerdu · 02/02/2022 10:26

Because it’s a ‘proper’ coffee, with actual coffee in. As opposed to the buckets of lukewarm milk you usually get when you order a latte or cappuccino in most cafe chains.

Most of Europe drink small, stronger coffees as standard - it’s only really us and the US that have this weird penchant for huge bowls of sweetened nursery-style milky drinks.

There are plenty of other types of coffee to choose from if the standard flat white doesn’t work for you.

Comefromaway · 02/02/2022 10:28

@MrsDThomas

If you what a white coffee (like one you’d make at home), what do you ask for?

I had no idea what a flat white was till now.

Seriously, i never go into coffee shops. They never make them like i do at home . Not hot enough

An Americano with milk. It's what dh orders.
Aldidl · 02/02/2022 10:41

I asked Costa barista the difference recently! His first point of difference was that the water is only run through the coffee (he had more technical language, I can’t remember!) for 15 seconds in a flat white (shorter than Americano) so the coffee shot is slightly sweeter!

ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 02/02/2022 10:42

As with pavlovas, the UK took a New Zealand invention and just ruined it slightly.

I am pretty sure that lattes and cappuccinos aren’t made with full fat cream - they’re made with milk. You can see it being poured in! They might be being made with full fat milk - depends on the place. But you can usually specify semi skimmed or whatever fancy milk you want.
