But will Johnson pay his fine? Will he go and overlook it being so busy partying running the country?

DuncinToffee · 01/02/2022 12:40

Which Tory donor will he use this tme?

Florianus · 01/02/2022 12:43

Alexandra2001:
Who said it was wrong?

I did. Sorry if you were not referring to me, but you didn't say to whom you were referring.

DuncinToffee · 01/02/2022 12:46

The Speaker on that comment

Jessica Elgot @jessicaelgot
Hoyle gives a light touch rebuke to Johnson on his Savile comments."Procedurally, nothing disorderly occurred. But such allegations should not be made lightly

"I am far from satisfied that the comments in question were appropriate on this occasion... I want a nicer Parliament."

AdamRyan · 01/02/2022 12:46

www.reuters.com/article/factcheck-britain-savile-idUSL1N2RP200

Starmer subsequently criticised the handling of the allegations by police and prosecutors in his 2013 statement on the report. He also apologised for “shortcomings in the part played by the CPS in these cases” and said he hoped it would be a “watershed moment” for the handling of such complaints. (that's from the fact check link upthread)

Read his own words about what he tried to do as DPP from 2014

This focus on starmer is absolutely disgusting and in my opinion straight out of the facist playbook - it's getting the public to respond based on emotions not facts.

Johnson is a disgrace.

DuncinToffee · 01/02/2022 12:47

Her next tweet is intriguing

Hoyle gets much angrier about a press release of education funding that went out last night and apparently something MPs didn't know about

Florianus · 01/02/2022 12:48

DePfeffoff:
None of that changes the fact that the Cabinet Minister is responsible for what his or her department does.

And that's the trouble with the whole system. Civil servants can run rings around their minister, bring in suitcases of alcohol, undermine policy - knowing that they will never be named and that their minister will take the blame.

(I am not saying that every CS does that - but the essence of Partygate is that the staff have run wild. Ministers don't have time to supervise them, as a boss in a factory or office could do..)

Notonthestairs · 01/02/2022 12:55

"It'll take more than a No10 reorganisation to address the problems highlighted by Sue Gray's work. For as long as he is prime minister the character of the government will be determined by the court of Boris Johnson"

Interesting reading from Alex Thomas at the Institute for Government. Essentially change of staff won't make much difference because Johnson "is avoiding the other critique – of his leadership and approach to decision making."

Bollocks. The essence of Partygate is that our leader is a corrupt liar who should never have been allowed anywhere near high office.

DuncinToffee · 01/02/2022 13:00

It's a distraction and it is working well.

Peston

Buried on page 199 of the Department of Health and Social Care’s annual report published yesterday is the shocking disclosure that it has incurred £8.7bn of losses - £8.7bn ! - on £12.1bn of PPE bought in 2020/21. Think about how that money could have been…

Especially when the reason ITU staff were working 13 hour shifts without a break was because there was a shortage of PPE.

Isn't Keir Starmer playing to emotions here? (15 Jan)

Keir Starmer
Last year, Her Majesty the Queen sat alone when she marked the passing of the man she had been married to for 73 years. She followed the rules of the country that she leads. On the eve of that funeral, a suitcase was filled with booze and wheeled into Downing Street. A DJ played, and staff partied late into the night. The Prime Minister has been forced to hand an apology to Her Majesty the Queen. Is he not ashamed that he did not hand in his resignation at the same time?

The Prime Minister
I understand why the right hon. and learned Gentleman continues to politicise—

Mr Speaker
We normally would not, and quite rightly, mention the royal family. We do not get into discussions on the royal family.

I thought it had been confirmed that Boris Johnson wasn't in Downing Street when this gathering took place?

Mmm, realistically what supervision could Johnson of all people have offered in that situation?

Is that not factual, Clav?

Notonthestairs · 01/02/2022 13:17

Duncin - that Preston thread is terrible.

This impairment relates to: • £0.67 billion of PPE which cannot be used, for instance because it is defective; • £2.6 billion of PPE which is not suitable for use within the health and social care sector but which…(they haven't yet found a use for)
^
"In other words the DHSC paid above the odds for more PPE than was needed, tons of which are not fit for purpose. A jaw dropper, even in jaw dropping times"
^
My wording in brackets. I wonder who they over paid for PPE.

DuncinToffee · 01/02/2022 13:18

Johnson’s official spokesman has also refused to repeat the PM’s false remarks about Jimmy Saville.

There is growing pressure from Tory MPs for him to withdraw his remarks ahead of PMQs tomorrow.

Clavinova · 01/02/2022 13:20

Is that not factual, Clav?

No idea - I have only read media reports - not facts. The account is padded out for effect by Keir Starmer and he should know not to mention the Queen as stated by the Speaker.

Blossomtoes · 01/02/2022 13:20

This should be interesting.

Well, if he doesn't pay up he will go to court and then we'll know that he was fined.

Youre still waiting for the Sue Gray report? Oh bless you.

He'll get it on expenses.

PPE

CNN April 2020

The cost of personal protective equipment is skyrocketing more than 1,000% in some cases as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

The federal government's Strategic National Stockpile has nearly emptied and states have been left to find PPE supplies on their own. The surge in demand has left importers, suppliers and purchasers scrambling. And price gouging has exacerbated the problem.
"The cost keeps rising and rising and rising, and there's no end in sight," said Michael Einhorn, CEO and President of Dealmed, a PPE distributor based in New York.

Like it or not, he achieved high office through a series of democratic votes.

All the more critical to ensure that you buy what you need and will use.

When loo rolls had vanished off shelves and there was price gouging I didn't pay twice the normal price for A4 paper.
