to think titanic movie is cringy

Came out when I was 12 and I loved it but at 36 caught it on tv last night and it is so cringy. Whilst I think Winslet and Leo are great actors their acting in it is cringe although I don't know if it's their inexperience or just the script. Every 2nd line is 'Jack Rose'. I don't get how both were nominated for Oscars for it when it genuinely wasn't good acting by any means on either part and again I think both are genuinely brilliant in their other films.

Watching it is reminiscent of watching 90s Home and Away or just bad teenage tv acting. Yea the effects are great but the script in itself is just so mediocre and so 12 year old girl stuff. It didn't occur to me how little the film actually go into the subject matter of the Titanic like the creation of it and the aftermath of the sinking etc.

The rich in it like Cal and Rose's mum are so 1 dimensional greedy villains which is kind of hypocritical considering how wealthy Cameron himself is, and the poor Irish on 3rd class are just laughably bad and cliche with accents Irish people never have. And I say that as an Irish person myself so no racism.

A critic said after that the only reason it got oscar noms was because of the money it gained and I sort of agree. Again the effects and cinematography were great but the film itself was just a predictable cringe fest.

It’s a teen film about first love, if you’re watching it at 36 you aren’t going to get much out of it.

Sorry to be grumpy but my parnts are forever watching Disney films and thn complaining about thm. They’re kids films! And Titanic is for 14-16 yr old girls.

GirlInACountrySong · 29/01/2022 20:15

for comparison we were in the midst of an onslaught of Steven Seagal films back then!

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 29/01/2022 20:22

@MadMadMadamMim

The main thing I remember was being fucking enraged when old crone Kate deliberately dropped the massively expensive jewel into the water. I mean - what the actual fuck? Who on earth would keep a priceless necklace until they were about 90 and then throw it away in silly dramatics. It was worth about $250 million dollars.

Old people are more pragmatic. She could have given it to her granddaughter. Or charity. It made me SO cross! Build homes for Irish orphans. Or something.

But I thought the old lady dropped it into the ocean at the end? Well, baby, I went down and got it for you. Awe, you shouldn't have.
HelloFrostyMorning · 29/01/2022 20:28

@DrSbaitso

MNers do spend a lot of time cringing....

I never liked it much, but love stories rarely move me. It was quite epic for the time. People are more critical of stories than they used to be. It shouldn't surprise you thar you feel differently about it at 36 than you did at 12. It was probably aimed at a younger audience.

This. ^ Another silly snobby thread looking down on a majorly successful mainstream film, that made huge stars out of the 2 main roles, and turned the male star into a 'heart throb.' And if you like it then you're not 'edgy' like the cool girls on here. Hmm

1/10. Boring thread, Must try harder @makkapacca See the teacher.

ghostyslovesheets · 29/01/2022 20:31

@eddiemairswife

It was far, far too long and didn't arouse any emotion (apart from boredom) in me whatsoever. Whereas 'A Night to Remember' was genuinely moving.
This! If you want a movie about The Titanic without the silly melodramatic love story (like the sinking of The Titanic wasn't enough!) A Night To Remember is epic - so stiff upper lip and makes my cry every time.

I’ve only seen it once. We thought it was boring and couldn’t wait for the fucking ship to sink by the end.

WhatWouldKalindaDo · 29/01/2022 20:42

Leo wasn't nominated for an Oscar for Titanic, though Kate was.

I love Titanic, cheesy or not. I was also 12 when it came out. It was the biggest movie to come out that year. I remember going to see it the day it was released and the queue went round the block.

Even though parts of it seem cheesy now, I have very fond memories of it.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 29/01/2022 20:43

I like plenty of cheesy uncool films but romantic epics aren't really my thing. I found Titanic overlong and the bit where it segues into being an action film jars, but I did think there were some moving scenes as the boat is sinking, as well as jaw dropping special effects. The old couple holding onto one another as their cabin fills with water, the Irish mother telling her children they were going to Tír na nÓg, one of the musicians telling the others that it had been an honour to play with them. I did get a bit sniffly then.

No one has ever put it on a list with Citizen Kane though. Grin

Yes! These made me cry for the people who were really onboard.

HelloFrostyMorning · 29/01/2022 20:53

@Ionlydomassiveonesonl

- they were both miscast. Leo looked 12 and Kate looked like his mother. But I’m glad it won an Oscar - popular films should. Not arty farty obscure ones that nobody ever sees.

I agree with your second sentence. I get sick of arty farty boring shit getting all the oscars too. But I disagree with the first. Leo looked a couple of years younger than Kate, but not like his mother! He looked 19 or so and she looked about 22.

DrSbaitso · 29/01/2022 20:56

Kate Winslet was 22 at the time of filming. Di Caprio was 23.

Yes, they look like kids to me now as well. Why could that be, I wonder...

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 29/01/2022 20:58

@veevee04

I do think gladiator has stood the test of time though it's still a brilliant film.
Definitely. Love Gladiator.
TrufflyPig · 29/01/2022 21:01

I never liked the bit where Rose basically says she always loved Jack more than her actual husband, whose grandchildren just smile indulgently.

Now you mention it, I did always think this at the end when she meets Jack on the stairs (I assume in some sort of afterlife), even when I was young I thought 'didn't she have a husband who she had children with?! Where is he?'.

sparklefarts · 29/01/2022 21:04

@skybluee

I didn't like it. When I laughed at one part my friend slapped me in the face in the cinema.
Your friend slapped you in the face? ShockConfusedConfusedConfused
Littlepaws18 · 29/01/2022 21:05

It's one of the greatest movies of all time- fact!!!

CathyorClaire · 29/01/2022 21:12

It was indescibably massive at the time and it's still absorbingly watchable.

I do get annoyed at Rose bleating 'Jack' while not making any move to budge up on the door at the end these days though.

HelloFrostyMorning · 29/01/2022 21:53

@DrSbaitso

Kate Winslet was 22 at the time of filming. Di Caprio was 23.

Yeah this. ^

I am roughly 11 years older than Leo, and I thought he was gorgeous at the time (In Romeo and Juliet, and Titanic, and The Beach...) He looked a bit younger and WAS a bit younger than me, but it wasn't weird. He was 24, and I was about 35 when Titanic came out.

NOW I am an old gimmer in my late 50s, and Leo looks super young in Titanic now, and finding him attractive at 23-ish now is just weird! Him at 47 is appealing though! And a woman in her late 50s thinking a man in his late 40s is attractive is perfectly OK.

Luzina · 29/01/2022 21:55

It’s an incredibly bad film. It was really popular but I don’t think anyone thought it was a highbrow classic at the time

Pedalpushers · 29/01/2022 22:00

It has some good parts but is way too long. Cheesy but good fun and I'm not going to complain about mid 90s Leo who I, much like Celine, see every night in my dreams.

A lot of its oscars were in technical categories and it was, like all of James Cameron's films, a huge technical achievement that used technology never seen before on film.

Pedalpushers · 29/01/2022 22:02

@HelloFrostyMorning I had a similar experience when I realised a boyband member who I was hopelessly infatuated with as a teen (who is older than me) was only 16/17 in their early videos and questioned the ethics of still finding him attractive.

Pyewhacket · 29/01/2022 22:03

Made an awful lot of money which I think was the point of it. And it didn't do Kate and Leo much harm either.

The only bit I thought was meh, was there was clearly enough room on that wreckage for the both of them.

Seemslikeagoodidea · 29/01/2022 22:13

I agree OP. It was massively overhyped at the time, and although the special effects and costumes were good, somehow the whole thing seemed lacking in something. I was just bored and underwhelmed at the end.

The old black and white film A Night To Remember is far better, IMO. It has a poignance and atmosphere that puts it in a class of its own.

Pedalpushers · 29/01/2022 22:26

whispers

Citizen Kane and The Godfather are both really boring.

LOL!Grin

It's OK to fancy Robbie Williams (or whoever it was) when he was 16/17 and you were 15, or even if you were early to mid 20s. Bit weird to fancy a 16 y.o. boy when you are 50! Shock Young enough to be my grandson! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeek! Shock
