Running a red light at a crossing

Latte123 · 29/01/2022 11:52

Help me, I feel so ashamed, can you hand yourself in for running a red at a crossing? I've been so stupid and I just didn't realise, until I looked in my rear view mirror and saw people walking on the crossing, I couldn't see them to my left at first because there was a bus there, no one was hurt but I feel horrific, is there anything I can do for more information about what I did?

Be far more careful and aware next time?

DeadSouth · 29/01/2022 11:55

Mumsnet really can be the most dramatic of places at times

ApolloandDaphne · 29/01/2022 11:59

We all do silly things and learn from them. No-one was hurt. Just pay more attention next time.

User12398712 · 29/01/2022 11:59

Learn from it. You made a mistake. Nobody was hurt. From now on, check more carefully before you move off at lights.

Latte123 · 29/01/2022 12:00

I know, I've no excuse for it, I feel terrible, and I don't know how to go about fixing my mistake

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 29/01/2022 12:03

Well you can't go back in time. Stop being so dramatic.

It will just make you more aware.

PonyPatter44 · 29/01/2022 12:03

Oh for goodness sake.. if this is for real, just be more careful next time. You might get a ticket through the post if there are cameras on that crossing, but they are quite rare.

Latte123 · 29/01/2022 12:03

I know it sounds dramatic, but I've more than likely traumatised someone and it's not fair is it

User12398712 · 29/01/2022 12:04

You can't "fix" your mistake. It's not like you can go back in time and not run the red light. No damage was done so there are no reparations to make. There is no point dwelling on a past mistake, concentrate on making sure you are a better driver in future so it doesn't happen again with serious consequences.

Georgeskitchen · 29/01/2022 12:06

What a bizarre Post. Who have you traumatised? Did you narrowly miss hitting someone? What are you worried about?
Just concentrate a little more in future, especially if there is a bus in the vicinity!!

sirfredfredgeorge · 29/01/2022 12:09

You can fix your mistake, surrendering your licence will fix the actual mistake - driving a car whilst not meeting the minimum standard required - however that does assume it really was an actual dangerous situation which isn't clear at all, it actually sounds like you proceeded entirely safely as the way was clear just not in adherence with the light, that's a relatively minor mistake, but one you certainly should take more care.

User12398712 · 29/01/2022 12:09

No, most likely you've momentarily pissed someone off who was about to cross. They've muttered "fucking twat drivers" under their breath and promptly forgotten about the whole thing. If you had nearly hit someone who was already crossing, you would have noticed.
Latte123 · 29/01/2022 12:11

No not narrowly missed, but when I checked behind there were people there, and they'll have been angry, it could have gone very differently and i can't help thinking what could have happened, because of my stupidity.

OP posts:
mynameiscalypso · 29/01/2022 12:11

People run red lights all the time. It's shit but it happens. I never assume that a car is going to actually stop at a red light. Nobody will be traumatised.

User12398712 · 29/01/2022 12:11

And, newsflash, pedestrians cross the road on red as well. If you aren't looking out for them even if you have a green light, you should be.

ComDummings · 29/01/2022 12:12

Don’t panic! But do learn from it and move it. Yes you probably annoyed the people waiting to cross. But nobody was harmed. Be extra careful in future, don’t beat yourself up over it.

ComDummings · 29/01/2022 12:13

Move on*

User12398712 · 29/01/2022 12:14

@ComDummings

Move on*
But check for red lights first! Grin
Chely · 29/01/2022 12:15

I see it happen a lot round these parts, seen poor people shit themselves when a car almost hits them at one set. They are all so eager to leave 1 set of lights that they seem to be blind to the 2nd set a short distance ahead where lots of people cross to get to the supermarket.
Just be more vigilant in future and be glad nobody was injured.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 29/01/2022 12:16

Errors happen. Nobody is perfect.

daisychainsandrainbows · 29/01/2022 12:17

They'll have muttered under their breath about the careless car driver and then went about their day. You were lucky, you didn't hit anybody so thankfully it's a learning opportunity and not something you need to repent for.

I get you're shaken up, I was when I'd had a hideous morning with toddler DD and ran a red light when I was really wound up and not concentrating. But you can't beat yourself up forever, just acknowledge it was a mistake, understand what led you to make that mistake and endeavour not to make it again.

Againstmachine · 29/01/2022 12:19

Don't dwell on it, nothing bad happened.

But by same token stop making excuses, the bus being in way is a excuse, if you can't see don't go.

MasterBeth · 29/01/2022 12:21

You are worrying unreasonably about this. Shit happens. Drive more carefully in the future.

Latte123 · 29/01/2022 12:22

It was so careless and normally I'm too careful, I can't believe it I'm so angry with myself, I feel so bad for the people I wish I could apologise for scaring them

monkeyadja · 29/01/2022 12:32

Latte

Do you have anxiety/ocd? I only ask because I suffer from this sort of mentality, that I find it hard to forgive myself for things.

As other people have said, you’re not perfect and these things do sometimes happen, for many reasons - temporary lack of concentration because you were stressed or your mind was elsewhere etc.

Please don’t worry too much - you’ve hurt nobody and the worry you’re putting yourself through now will probably be greater than that suffered by the pedestrians at the crossing!
