Truss put herself in a tank, i'm sure our commander in chief can go one better.

Why raise "the failings of Alan Clark"?

You can meander as much as you like - it doesn't bother me. I was comparing, not complaining.

Clavinova · 31/01/2022 10:20

Is Johnson still going to the Ukraine?

I hope so - he had a very successful trip meeting troops in Estonia in December 2019. Great video -

Maybe Mark Francois could lend him a toy gun? Grin

Florianus · 31/01/2022 10:45

According to the BBC, the Sue Gray report is going to Downing Street this morning so hopefully we will soon get to see what remains of it.

jgw1 · 31/01/2022 10:45

@CryingAtTheDiscotheque

Who knows about Russia

Yes, we will never know. What we do know is (i) Johnson delayed the Russia report for 18 months and has not taken a single step to address the concerns identified in that report (ii) Johnson ennobled Lebedev and has holidayed at his house(s) (iii) Johnson last week pulled the economic crime bill - why, if he is serious about addressing laundering of Russian money and/or hitting the oligarchs?

He is also short of money, was regarded as a security risk by previous PM, and appears to be partial to "refreshments".

But Kier Starmer owns a field.

Imagine if Boris did have an army background. Scary thought seeing him operate a gun.

He does appear to be very prone to shooting himself in the foot.

I laughed at the Idi Amin reference! It's a bit of a come down from Churchill, isn't it?

notimagain · 31/01/2022 10:55

I suspect a visit to the Ukraine itself might present sorts of diplomatic difficulties ATM…not that that has ever bothered the PM…

On a more practical level I think if one aim is a photo op of the PM glad handing with sizeable numbers of British regular forces who are all happy having their pics taken, and preferably with lots of green kit in the background, then he’ll be going to Estonia or somewhere else currently a NATO member state.

Be genuinely very interesting to see what he does.

Wheresthebeach · 31/01/2022 10:57

Sadly I think it will be so watered down that it will be useless. A few fines, and Boris will sweep it under the carpet as best he can.

The May elections will be important. He won't go now before then. If they can convince their heartland that its a lot of fuss over a bit of cake, then he'll be fine. People want to forget the Pandemic and move on I fear.

the80sweregreat · 31/01/2022 10:59

The Sue Gray report.
It will be interesting to see if it does come out today and how they will proceed with the rest of of the investigations with the Met involved and the fines imposed ( if they fine them )
I agree that there are much bigger things to concern people and April will be so hard for many with everything going up. It looks as if the NIC rises won't be overturned and I'm sure the council taxes will also increase this year too as well as energy costs and food as well as the situation in Russia. Let's hope that can be sorted out.
It doesn't stop me being angry about the parties over lockdown , but soon there will be other bigger things to be worried about. How people will manage I've no idea , it all feels a bit bleak to be honest.

Blossomtoes · 31/01/2022 11:02

People want to forget the Pandemic and move on I fear.

Some do. Others, particularly those who are bereaved, are deeply traumatised and are unable to move on however much they might want to. This isn’t going to go away before May and, even if it goes quiet for a bit, it will be resurrected.

Peregrina · 31/01/2022 11:02

People will want to forget the pandemic and move on, but many of us won't be able to. In my case, there are funerals of friends and relatives that I wasn't able to attend and I am not going to forget that I wasn't allowed to pay my respects to them. Watching a zoom service from the Crematorium is no real substitute.

Florianus · 31/01/2022 11:04

I'm doubtful. The Prime Minister is currently in Tilbury, celebrating its new status as a freeport, and will presumably want to read it before presenting it first to parliament and answering questions on it, as he committed to doing. It might be released to the press and public after that - possibly this evening, but more likely tomorrow I would guess.

After much back and forth, expecting the Sue Gray report to land in No 10 today. Report will take into account the Met's request for 'minimal reference' to those events police investigating, so what PM will get won't be the entire findings of Gray probe

So it will continue.......

I do see what you mean, but what Partygate has thrown into stark relief is the fact that the current government does not care what the ordinary person has to suffer. I think (hope) that fact will stick in people's mind as the cost of living crisis continues to bite.

The May elections will be the proof or otherwise of the pudding. Or cake.

It's difficult to see what the measure of the May elections would be. It is normal for the party in power to lose seats in mid-term local elections, but I don't know what number of losses would be deemed acceptable for no change of leader.

... but possibly more useful than the investigation by the Met, who have now said that they are only looking into half of the gatherings, that they only expect to issue fixed penalty notices, and - even if they do - they are not going to name those they might fine.

If you mean Boris, thankfully he isn't our commander in chief.

I think part of that will be wanting a fresh start with a different PM.

But who? A current article in the New Statesman concludes that the party won't want to replace Johnson because they are too fearful of what a mess Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak could make.
SueSaid · 31/01/2022 11:25

'Some do. Others, particularly those who are bereaved, are deeply traumatised and are unable to move on however much they might want to. '

Yes and it's of course understandable, many people project when they are bereaved. Anger is a perfectly normal part of the process.

What the Government or impartial medical experts should perhaps be doing is reiterating that whatever lines may have been crossed the need for strict restrictions to prevent different households mixing at social events was of paramount importance. I absolutely understand why I couldn't attend relatives funerals, I'm not of the mindset well if they refreshments in the office we should have been allowed to go because I can see the rationale behind the rules.
