For me, it was Paris. Not an AIBU, I know

OP posts:
oviraptor21 · 27/01/2022 23:56

Las Vegas

TrashyPanda · 27/01/2022 23:56

London. Dirty, overcrowded and unfriendly. Never feel safe.
Give me NY every single time.

DappledThings · 27/01/2022 23:58

@MogsBestestFurball

Malta was overdeveloped. I can see how it would have been so beautiful years ago before holiday resorts were allowed to take over.
Loved Malta. So much to see. We had 8 days there and filled them so easily. Buses were really easy to get you everywhere too. So many amazing sites, forts, museums, history from so many different significant periods. Always comes up on these threads, always a mystery to me.

I also love the Giant's Causeway. I've been three times and always find it incredible how something so oddly but uniformly shaped can be natural.

Sri Lanka has been mentioned, my favourite country I've ever been to.

Zero interest in the Maldives. Not into scuba or lying on a beach. Not sure what else it was a PP was expecting.

@HoneyFlowers

Another place was Sweden, wow so many rude people there.
@HoneyFlowers

They weren't rude. They were just Scandinavian.

TheHoptimist · 28/01/2022 00:00

@Infinitemoon

Sam Francisco. After I'd watch the second person shit on the pavement I was over it.

Birmingham has similar so...

Birmingham is probably by choice

SFO is due to the total absence of any card for adults with ASD and Semh

BayesBlues · 28/01/2022 00:01

@namechangedforthisoneok

Sri Lanka
How can Sri Lanka be OVER rated!? It's amazing!! Culture, nature, beaches - so much variety in such a small place. Plus great food, lovely people. I've been there twice and can't wait to get back at some point.
CaliforniaDrumming · 28/01/2022 00:03

Vegas. Other than that soulless city, most destinations have had something I have liked.

PurpleFlower1983 · 28/01/2022 00:03

Cornwall, lovely beaches and towns but shit when the weather is crap which it is a lot.

I would have agreed about Paris until my most recent visit when I absolutely loved it. I’d been twice previously and thought it was hugely overrated.

Thirtytimesround · 28/01/2022 00:04

Yep Paris. So disappointed.

MogsBestestFurball · 28/01/2022 00:05

National Trust cottages in the UK. The ones we stayed in looked amazing in the photos but were in reality dingy, grimy and impractically furnished for self catering. And they would only give me 1 key for the property, despite it being a 6 guest property. It made me yearn for the drab looking but actually fantastic HPB cottages.

DorsVenabili · 28/01/2022 00:07

I think it depends what you expect- places like Las Vegas/Blackpool/DubaiGold coast etc- surely everyone expects them to be a bit soulless/naff/charmless?
You expect to be hassled in places like Cairo/Delhi/Sharm etc - its a trade off for the other attractions.
Anyway I love both NYC and London.so appear to be in a minority
I found the alhambra to be totally overrated and also a bit meh about Machu Pichu- it didn't feel worth the walk and was very touristy and covered in mosquitos!

PurpleCarpets · 28/01/2022 00:07

@Mercier1

Belfast is NOT a shithole!
It's catchy - I can see you've got a fine future writing social media posts for the Belfast Tourist Board Grin
thing47 · 28/01/2022 00:07

LA. Just grim, delighted so many of you agree!

Criticising Barbados for just being beaches is a bit bonkers, though. It's a flat island the size of the Isle of Wight and surrounded by oceans, what else did you expect to be its main appeal?

TheHoptimist · 28/01/2022 00:08

@nonono1

Anyone who found NYC underwhelming clearly didn’t do it right!
Or those who like it live in boring suburbia

Been to nyc many many times but can totally take it or leave it
Live in central London which generally trumps it

nocoolnamesleft · 28/01/2022 00:08

New York city. Didn't really do it for me. Much preferred Chicago.

PurpleFlower1983 · 28/01/2022 00:09

When we went to Venice we stayed in a gorgeous little hidden gem of a hotel off the beaten track. It had amazing restaurants locally and it was great getting lost around the back streets. I loved it but hated the overcrowded touristy bits and found it so different to that vibe. The Rialto Bridge with all the tacking stalls - awful! I did love the gondola ride though and found the whole place fascinating.

KloppsTeeth · 28/01/2022 00:11

Niagara Falls. Wow and all that, but once you stop looking, the rest of the place is dreadful.

Volhhg · 28/01/2022 00:11

Boracay in the Philippines

wanttomarryamillionaire · 28/01/2022 00:12

Cornwall, incredibly boring and full of middle class tossers on holiday.

WidgetyWoo · 28/01/2022 00:13

Barbados. Soulless and miserable. With hospitality staff who huffed and puffed and seems completely inconvenienced to be asked for anything by tourist customers. As well as the risk of being approached by groups of men offering to sell drugs (even to families with small children) and with “no guns” signs up outside many venues.

Beautiful beaches though.

PurpleCarpets · 28/01/2022 00:13

@wanttomarryamillionaire

Cornwall, incredibly boring and full of middle class tossers on holiday.
And the Cornish.
waltzingparrot · 28/01/2022 00:13

My vote goes to Dublin too

Filthy, with litter just everywhere.

thefinn · 28/01/2022 00:16

Monaco, Milan and Cornwall

Daisymaybe60 · 28/01/2022 00:19

Some of my favourite places have been nominated - London, NY, anywhere in Scotland, Sri Lanka, Paris, Venice, San Francisco, Whitby.

But I completely agree that LA (God, it’s soulless), Sydney (no history or decent nightlife) and Barcelona (muggers’ paradise) are overrated. And the most boring, up itself place I’ve ever been to is St Moritz. I’d add Budapest to the list, as we were ripped off and overcharged everywhere we went.

SeaWitchly · 28/01/2022 00:20

I don’t understand how you can dislike the whole of London. There are so many distinct parts and there’s endless stuff to do. Your loss!

Well, some on here think the whole of Australia is like a 1980s shopping centre Grin
