He's down for Christmas, and there was a converstaion misunderstanding involving pets and batteries running down. A few seconds later, he said "Well, I think it would be a disaster if the batteries on your rabbit ran out" and he winked at me.

I was a bit We don't have that kind of cheeky friendship at all, and actually, he's always been quite chilly with me before now. No alcohol was involved. AIBU?

And I don't have a rabbit anyway. [deprived]

The winking is worrying though isn't it .

Perhaps he thought you were being cheeky with your conversation misunderstanding so was just joining in?

I think he loves you. He'll be pulling your pigtails next.

No, the misunderstanding was really pedestrian - someone mentioned the batteries were dead on their camera, and someone else was discussing their pet and heard the phrase 'found them dead in the morning'. It wasn't even giggle-worthy.

tbh, I'm shocked he even knows what a rabbit is.

I think it's always a bit surprising when family/inlaws make comments like that, especially if they aren't normally the 'type'.

Yes, that's probably why I'm a bit , really, he's not the type, not with me, anyway. He is with Dh, but they're twins, so they kind of have their own odd language anyway.

I'd try not to get too worked up though!

lol, no indeed. I'm just trying to squash the rising panic that he might appear in our bedroom with a surprise present

Maybe he just took the opportunity to link the dead batteries-dead animals themes together and make a joke, without really thinking about what exactly he was saying and who he was talking to?

Are you sure there was no alcohol involved? (grasping at straws)..
