Stabbed to death in broad daylight by her ex husband.

Surely we can do more to protect women?
She’d been to the police countless times, panic alarms installed and restraining order in place.

What a travesty, yet another woman brutally murdered.

Poor Yasmin another woman let down and her children had to witness the consequences of these failures.

Women are systematically being let down.

I do think race plays an issue in how this crime is perceived. Yasmin was a Muslim woman of North African origin with a foreign sounding name. (DH is also North African).

This case really really highlights the need for stalking and violent ex’s to be taken more seriously.

RIP Yasmin

picklemewalnuts · 27/01/2022 08:01

@Why2why, all I was explaining was the focus on the car involved. I agree that white women (and pretty women, too) get more attention in the media. If there's a commercially pleasing photo, it drives things. I agree that's wrong.

As it happens, until I opened this thread I didn't know Yasmin's name, colour or anything else about her. I'd just heard reference to an awful stabbing incident which ended when the assailant was run over by a passing motorist. I don't think, at that point, I knew it was a woman- I was thinking more terrorism.

I agree with you on many things. I don't agree the focus on the driver is because he's white. I think the incident would have been described the same way had the driver been a person of colour. That said, I can believe media coverage of a 'have a go hero' might be different depending on the ethnicity of the driver. I don't read newspapers/watch tv news so can't comment.

I get my news from radio 4 and here, so miss a lot of the bias, I think.

But let us not pretend women are all saints.

Where does this idea that complaining about the prevalence of male violence means that we think women are “all saints”?

It’s a straw man. No one says it.

I too found the quote above in bold in extremely poor taste. I’m sorry, I don’t know which poster said it originally.

Shameful of you on a thread such as this to try and deflect attention away from the central person, Yasmin, with such a crass comment. What you say bears no relevance to Yasmin.

Whatwhywhenwhere · 27/01/2022 08:37

I agree.

My idea is to set up a buddy network for people at risk of dv, as the police don’t seem to have the resources to protect women. Would this have happened if she was there n a group of four people and not alone? Possibly but the chances would be much lower. Women need to start looking out for wmen.

Also where is the petition for the car driver not to get charged please? I couldn’t see it?

Agree with this completely. Would love for the poster who said this to point out where anyone said that all women are saints. Or that any women are saints. Or even that this woman, yes, notallpeoplearenice, Yasmin, the brutally murdered woman we're actually talking about here, was a saint.

Yet you still feel the need to start into the 'women are violent too, men are victims too' on this thread. Why? And I am genuinely asking why? If you want to discuss that, start a thread. Discuss away to your heart's content. But did you really need to post it on this thread? Could you not have enough respect for Yasmin to keep your agenda / opinions out of it?

Fatherliamdeliverance · 27/01/2022 09:49

Why on earth has someone come on a thread honouring a victim of fatal domestic violence, yes, by a man, to point out that NAMALT?

Well, that Some Women Are Like That Too, should I say. The point being that male violence against women is a huge, global problem. Poor Yasmin is far from alone here. It's like saying All Lives Matter.
MrsIglesias · 27/01/2022 15:21

Thanks for posting this. Horrific case and my heart goes out to her family. And what else could she have done? She reported him and he still got to her due to police inaction! They just don't care about women.

I've read a lot about stalking and the relation with murders of women and it seems they are very linked but still the police will do very little when women report stalking. Lack of action by the police leads to this. failure to act on stalking means that murderers feel like they can do what they want until it escalates to murder. The blood of all these women is in the hands of our government and police who fail to act. If we treated femicide like we treat things like terrorism (by death toll) we would have millions poured into prevention. two or three women dying a week is not deemed important enough. And not to mention the terror that so many women live with because their violent ex partners are roaming about freely despite being reported for domestic abuse and threads.

ThreeFeetTall · 27/01/2022 16:26

I heard on the news that her ex had breached the restraining order, and not turned up to court.I thought in those circumstances the police went round to your house to find you?

I don't know why people are going on about the reporting of this awful murder, racism, white women syndrome whatever. 3 women in this country are murdered a week, by their partner or their ex-partner. All of these women, black, white, brown and anything in between, are victims and are let down terribly by our misogynistic society. Some are reported more than others, but lots of white victims are barely reported at all.

But it's ok. Next time there is a racism in sport event all over the news for weeks, I won't feel guilty, I will wave it away with 'why are they focusing on this? Why aren't mainstream media giving headline news to women's sport being destroyed by men in women's sport. It's a scandal. Why isn't it headline fucking news?!'

He might not have been there - staying somewhere else, with friends, etc. It's not uncommon.

Also, the understaffed and underfunded police in London have been rather tied up at Downing Street recently.

Restraining orders can work very well in some cases, but not in every situation. But they're cheap. Cheaper than the safer option of relocating the survivor.

Whatwhywhenwhere · 27/01/2022 22:08

I can’t help but feel that the man in the car is still being investigated because it was not a madman on a rampage it was “just” another domestic violence case. So, not as important as a madman on the loose. The fact he attacked her in broad daylight tells me he was a madman on the loose and if he would do that to her, why not anyone else before the police got him?

Anyway, I could be wrong and I hope I am.

Tealightsandd · 27/01/2022 22:29

I would happily donate to a crowdfunder for legal expenses, if the car man needs it (also to a similar crowdfunder to help Yasmin's children).

We need more good Samaritans.

Is it any wonder that bystanders don't get involved?

This poor guy is probably very traumatised by what he witnessed and experienced.

He tried to save a woman's life. He should not be charged for that.

His family are so right. He needs a medal.

"We are repeatedly told we don’t matter. Our voices are taken from us and so are our words. Our rights seem to diminish by the day.

And acts like these are happening more and more.

Men have it impressed upon them (usually by other men) that their wants matter more. Their rights matter more. They matter more.

And all the panic alarms and restraining orders in the world don’t matter when men who make women live in fear are permitted freedom.

If these attacks against women aren’t hate crimes then I don’t know what is."

This is so true. There are some organisations trying to make misogyny a hate crime.

I also wonder what children are being taught about Coercive control etc in schools. My guess is not much but if anyone can enlighten me. We need women and girls to know what is normal and what is not normal in relationships - violence, control, abuse is not normal. We need women and girls to know this, know how to get to safety and how to report it.

RIP Yasmin Chkaifi. Thanks

Italiangreyhound · 28/01/2022 01:32

Actually we need all people to know this, we need help for young people learning to know what is appropriate in relationships. We need to stop this cycle.

coldfeetmama · 28/01/2022 07:59

Reading this whole thread is very very sad

RIP Yasmin , my thoughts are with your family

What the fuck is happening to our country ?

I seriously fear for my grandchildren and their children

ThreeFeetTall · 28/01/2022 09:03

@Tealightsandd yes I guess if he was on the run (not sure if that's the right phrase) then they couldn't find him.
And yes if someone want to move they should be supported but what if they don't - massive upheaval of jobs/uni/friends/family/kids schools.

True, if he were assumed to be a terrorist on a stabbing spree there would be a different reaction.
