Stabbed to death in broad daylight by her ex husband.

Surely we can do more to protect women?
She’d been to the police countless times, panic alarms installed and restraining order in place.

What a travesty, yet another woman brutally murdered.

I know this sounds pedantic but her name is

Yasmin - no “e”

It would be respectful to spell it correctly. Perhaps the title of this thread can be edited?

Cocoabutterkim · 26/01/2022 08:32

Thanks @FrancescaContini

I lifted it from a news report! Didn’t think to double check. I’ll try to change the title

Dreadful case. Her poor boys.

I can believe the Met are overstretched and I know the court service is in a shambles. Surely it should have been a priority for police to find this piece of scum and arrest him when he failed to turn up in court earlier this month?

I also wonder what the police actually are doing. We hear reports from all sides that rapes and burglaries are going uninvestigated, never mind prosecuted. And yet in Gwent this weekend police had time to arrest a disabled grandmother on her mobility scooter for putting a sticker on a lamp post and keep her in a cell until the early hours of the morning. Confused

Fatherliamdeliverance · 26/01/2022 08:49

RIP Yasmin. That monster should have been locked up years ago. There were plenty of witnesses who heard him beating her. Flowers

Cocoabutterkim · 26/01/2022 08:59

Any police officers able to help us understand this?

It’s easy from the outside without an understanding of the system to say “they should have arrested him as soon as he didn’t show for court”! But what is the reality of these situations?

I am sorry. I took the spelling from the title.

skintasabint · 26/01/2022 09:04

I have just read that the man in the car has been charged with murder

OvaHere · 26/01/2022 09:06

It's such a dreadful thing for poor Yasmin's family. I feel so sorry for her children.

It feels like terrible acts of violence in broad daylight are becoming more commonplace particularly against women. I'm not sure if that's just my perception though.

I don't know what the answer is but I have zero faith the police will properly address VAWG even if they have the capacity. Which I'm not sure they do because there are issues on a wider structural and legal level than need addressing too.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 26/01/2022 09:59

I haven’t heard that skint

But another man has been after the death of a young woman in Norfolk.

bettybadger · 26/01/2022 10:47

I'd read the first news article and like pps, found it really odd that they seemed focussed on the driver of the car and didn't say much about the victim. Also surprised that given I read the original article, the update about Yasmin's identity didn't show in my news feed.

RIP Yasmin. Feel so so sorry for her poor sons.

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 26/01/2022 11:45

Yet another woman killed by an ex who had been stalking her. Another woman who had lived in fear and was not protected by the police. This was avoidable. It just doesn't end.

RIP Yasmin.

picklemewalnuts · 26/01/2022 12:04

To be fair, it's a depressingly normal story, until the part about the car. I can see why that's been a focus.

What's appalling, apart from the tragedy for her and those who know her, is how commonly men abuse their partners, how inadequate the support for those women is, and how often it escalates.

I know we can't prosecute for things people may do in the future, but surely we can take 'gateway' offences more seriously and be more punitive?

We could but when women dont matter, why would we waste the time and effort?
When will we matter? After the revolution?

I hope that soon all women will rise up and say enough. I'll be right there with y'all.

Sorry, I really can’t see what you see - a genuine reason why the car should be the focus and not the victim.

If someone can point on why in this circumstance the victim should not be the focus, then I am all ears. No problem in talking about the car and the desperate attempt by that poor man to save her but the victim should absolutely be the main focus.

picklemewalnuts · 26/01/2022 13:26

She absolutely should, @Why2why . But newspapers focus on novelty. 'New' s.

When I mentioned it to DH today- 'poor woman, stabbed, daylight, ex attacked her, long history of trying to get away from his abuse...' He didn't recognise the story until I said '...and a driver...' at which point he remembered he'd read the story.
That's what makes this particular tragedy stand out from others and get media time.

It's no more tragic, she's no less important, than all the other similar cases.

RIP Yasmin. In the Metro today, there was a picture of her and her killer, but the car guy wasn't mentioned, or as a small detail.

Cocoabutterkim · 26/01/2022 18:46

The driver of the car has been released on bail. Hopefully that’ll be the end of things for him.

But the more that comes out about the torture that Yasmin experienced over the years at the hands of her murderer the more appalled I am at how terribly she was let down

This is scandalous. The man shouldn’t have been walking free around the streets.

Owlink · 26/01/2022 20:33

Poor Yasmin. Heartbreaking for her family. RIP.

We are 2nd class citizens.

Absolutely horrendous, and so maddening that this man could have been stopped.

RIP Yasmin.

Really … was that how the cases of the recent murders of white women captured the heart and attention of the nation? I’m really struggling to understand your justification of this and would really like to also understand whether you’re saying there isn’t a huge difference in how the media treats women of colour.

I’m confused by what it is you’re trying to justify or explain away.
