To be so annoyed at potato sizes

Blinkingheckythump · 25/01/2022 16:17

I am so sick of tiny little potatoes that mean I need to peel double the amount of them, I know they never used to be so small. Even "baking" potatoes are just standard sized these days. Why oh why don't they grow regular sized potatoes anymore?! Some are literally smaller than "new" potatoes. Is there some kind of tiny potato conspiracy going on? Aibu to just want decent sized potatoes?! It's so frustrating I'm actually considering just giving up and making smash 😂

I think it’s more a case of us getting used to giant sized baking potatoes and thinking regular baking potatoes are small tbh.

Jellycatrabbit · 25/01/2022 16:20

Our allotment crop was all littles this year - dry spring and early summer messed it up.

mumda · 25/01/2022 16:20

Stop peeling them. Give them a wash. Mash them with skins on.

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 25/01/2022 16:21

I agree. I've got around this by moving the potatoes closer to my face so they appear bigger.

FadedRed · 25/01/2022 16:21

Wash them, cook them rigour peeling first. Then either eat them skins and all (good fibre and vitamins just under the skin surface) or peel them once cooked, much easier to get the peel off without taking away the actual potato.

MsAgnesDiPesto · 25/01/2022 16:21

Don’t peel them. Just wash if they haven’t been washed already. For anything other than mash, you can leave the skins on. For mash, halve and boil them, then you can slip the skins off once they’re cooked, and mash them up. (I remember my Nan doing this last thing, but haven’t ever done it myself. I imagine asbestos hands are needed. Or gloves.)

Also, you should probably calm down a bit 😁. It’s only spuds.

Sartre · 25/01/2022 16:21

I prefer smaller jacket potatoes because they cook quicker. Agree about regular potatoes though, peeling tiny ones is horrible.

junglejane66 · 25/01/2022 16:22

COVID, Ukraine crisis and gas and electricity prices are all to blame

TheChemicalMother · 25/01/2022 16:22

I don’t peel small potatoes.

Just have them ‘crushed’ with the skins on rather than mashed.

More fibre and vitamins too.

LethargicActress · 25/01/2022 16:23

I agree. It’s almost impossible to buy a decent sized potato for baking in my local supermarket.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/01/2022 16:27

You need “proper” potatoes in a sack. The ones with the soil still on. They are whoppers. Usually found in a sack at the butchers or farm shop. You need to wash the soil off, but they keep better in a sack.

Lockheart · 25/01/2022 16:27

It was a bad year for them last year, it's no conspiracy. The weather was dry and hot, no good for potatoes which need plenty of rain.

We also had next to no apples when normally the orchard at my parents would still be knee-deep in windfalls even now!

Mash with skins on?! No!

Don't subject people to that please Shock Sad

Yes they are smaller and yes I also hate it!

FangsForTheMemory · 25/01/2022 16:28

Roast them whole with the skins on. It really works.

Oh for the love of Mary, is this the potato version of "we've forgotten what a healthy weight looks like"?

I feel like some sort of cultural Rubicon has been crossed today. We are officially fat-shaming vegetables Grin

Wouldn't bother. Just wash them, rub them with coarse salt and black pepper and bake them

I live in the Fens,, all the supermarket ones I’ve seen are tiny but the ones direct from the farmer are massive. They take forever to bake!

The local farmers sells 25kg of bakers for £10 delivered. I have a suspicion they sell them locally in bulk because they can get a better price than the supermarkets. I have no idea what the supermarkets pay them but I suspect the supermarkets are making a massive amount on the mark up. 25kg of small bakers from Tesco’s would be £17.50.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 25/01/2022 16:32

It's caused by climate change, or is this one Brexit?

No they aren't! I'm struggling to find nice "small fist" sized ones. They're all too big.

Onions seem to have shrunk - I do think it's related to the weather during their growing season though..

😂😂😂😂 this made me laugh on a dreary day thanks
Skeumorph · 25/01/2022 16:35

It's the opposite here - I ordered 25kg last week too and I could not believe the size of it when it arrived.
