To be so annoyed at potato sizes

113 replies

Blinkingheckythump · 25/01/2022 16:17

I am so sick of tiny little potatoes that mean I need to peel double the amount of them, I know they never used to be so small. Even "baking" potatoes are just standard sized these days. Why oh why don't they grow regular sized potatoes anymore?! Some are literally smaller than "new" potatoes. Is there some kind of tiny potato conspiracy going on? Aibu to just want decent sized potatoes?! It's so frustrating I'm actually considering just giving up and making smash 😂

I agree. I've got around this by moving the potatoes closer to my face so they appear bigger.

No @neverknowinglyunreasonable. Those potatoes are small. These potatoes are far away.

Blinkingheckythump · 25/01/2022 17:44

@Crepuscularshadows

You know that Elvis Costello song "a good year for the roses"? Well 2021 was "a bad year for the tatties".

Don't despair though - as pps have noted, you have options: moving them closer to your face in some kind of father Tedesque confusion of small and far away; eating them anyway (complete with rancid skins of boak); or my personal favourite, walking past them in the shop while giving them the middle finger and saying "I wouldn't eat you if you roast in goose fat"

Oh but they would see through the bluff instantly, roasties are life!

Get a potato ricer. Boil them in their skins. Rice them and pick skins out.

OneTC · 25/01/2022 17:45

Yeah skin mashers should get in the sea

mumda · 25/01/2022 17:48

@RoomOfRequirement

Mash with skins on?! No!

Don't subject people to that please Shock Sad

Yes they are smaller and yes I also hate it!

I put the peas in too and mash them. Or broccoli.
Valkyrie40 · 25/01/2022 17:48

I agree with you OP - is it something to do with the weather I wonder?

There is never any excuse for resorting to smash though - that's just unacceptable!

ScrambledSmegs · 25/01/2022 17:50

You can buy potatoes as big as a baby's head in our local farm shop.

That may be an inappropriate analogy on this site, I'll admit.

TheVanguardSix · 25/01/2022 17:52

Also, you should probably calm down a bit 😁. It’s only spuds.

Them's fightin' words to a spud lover. You've just signed your own death warrant. Grin

Seriously though, OP, you have a point! I wonder if psychologically, I eat way less potatoes now because I've gotten sick and tired of peeling 'new potatoes but not new potatoes'. And my kids hate mash with the skins on, the heathens, so... less potatoes in this household, which feels all sorts of wrong. I grew up with an Irish mother and Polish father. I feel like I'm letting the side down!

Horst · 25/01/2022 17:52

You need to get them straight from the farmer pretty much. All supermarket ones are tiny tiny thingy. Mr farmer has potatoes as a big as a baby’s head.

lunepremiere79 · 25/01/2022 18:02

Roast and mash with the skins on, like others said - you get more nutrients that way and save yourself so much time! I haven't done it in years

JudgeRindersMinder · 25/01/2022 18:05

@mumda

Stop peeling them. Give them a wash. Mash them with skins on.
🤤
100problems · 25/01/2022 18:19

@neverknowinglyunreasonable excellent Grin

100problems · 25/01/2022 18:21

The question is are they smaller, or are you just further away?

Thinkbiglittleone · 25/01/2022 18:25

I thought this was going to be that are too big.

The ones I see are massive, there is only really my 4 year old who eats potatoes so I have to quarter it, then hope the rest keeps until the next few days.

WutheringHeights66 · 25/01/2022 18:28

But that’s how potatoes come out, not perfectly one sized spuds. If you want those, pay over the odds and buy the four “jacket potatoes” in a pack.

I’m with the unpeeled mash and crush them in their skins camp. Mashed with the skin on over a shepherds pie is delightful, smashed on a tray with olive oil and baked is also lovely. They’re both also a novelty and my adventurous family love something different, they usually think it’s been done on purpose not that I’m just a lazy mare.

Use what you have and use your imagination.

Unfortunately, quite a few people live nowhere near a farm or farm shop. We're lucky to have a proper greengrocer but many folk have only a choice of supermarkets. Bring back The Spud Van Man!

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 25/01/2022 20:36

@piglet81

I want big spuds and I cannot lie…
🤣
TheVolturi · 25/01/2022 20:38

I've bought baking spuds for years for this very reason! If you buy them loose you can pick the big ones, and they make great mash!

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 25/01/2022 20:38

Ooo I love a Vivaldi from Sainsers me! 🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔

lightisnotwhite · 25/01/2022 20:41

@DobbyTheHouseElk

You need “proper” potatoes in a sack. The ones with the soil still on. They are whoppers. Usually found in a sack at the butchers or farm shop. You need to wash the soil off, but they keep better in a sack.
Yep. Supermarket ones are for the benefit of the chain.

Yes this works a treat, but you need to slump over your plate when you're eating them or you're back to square one.

Teenagers naturally slump over plates whilst eating, so it is only when one gets older you find that potatoes aren't as big as you thought they were. Sad
