To be so annoyed at potato sizes

I am so sick of tiny little potatoes that mean I need to peel double the amount of them, I know they never used to be so small. Even "baking" potatoes are just standard sized these days. Why oh why don't they grow regular sized potatoes anymore?! Some are literally smaller than "new" potatoes. Is there some kind of tiny potato conspiracy going on? Aibu to just want decent sized potatoes?! It's so frustrating I'm actually considering just giving up and making smash 😂

YABU for suggesting Smash 🤢

Fatgalslim · 26/01/2022 12:39

I would refuse mash that had skins in, the same way as I'd go somewhere if only skin on fries were served.

Otherpeoplesteens, I don’t think ours is aimed at passing traffic, as it’s on a tiny B road, and not visible from the nearest A road at all.
The DC insist on taking any visiting friends inside it to marvel at its existence, and roll about laughing at their reactions!
It was a blessing during lockdown, as was the wee village shop.
Interesting to hear that the French got there first - I’d heard of automated unmanned general stores in small villages, with milk, eggs etc in refrigerated compartments, but never one purely for potatoes.

RobinPenguins · 26/01/2022 12:42

I’ve got massive ones from the market recently but agree supermarket ones seem generally small this year.

HeronLanyon · 26/01/2022 12:59

fat I offer you may full support re skin on french fries and I include all ‘wedges’ (even the word makes me angry and a little sick feeling) and any sweet potato abomination.
Phew feel better to have said that.

There is a farm with a 24hr milk vending machine a couple of villages over from us. You need to bring your own carton/bottle to fill, but you can even add shots of syrup to create a milkshake.

Every time I buy them from M&S they seem to all be huge in comparison, and a lot cleaner.
Apart from the spuds they sold a few days before Xmas, they were naff.

trumpisagit · 26/01/2022 13:30

I don't peel potatoes unless I am mashing them.
I much prefer small potatoes.

Skanking and Babdoc

At the risk of derailing the thread, if I recall the French farmers in Nouvion (which is NOT the same Nouvion as in 'Allo 'Allo!) had seen the idea in Germany.

It's hardly surprising that these things are becoming more common - it is the inevitable result of 'high wage' economies. In France the minimum wage is over €10 an hour now and employers' social insurance costs add about another 22% on top of that so it's not at all unusual to see automated bean to cup coffee machines even in fairly upscale establishments, and the idea of paying someone to stand in a kitchen peeling carrots disappeared a decade ago in favour of pre-prepared stuff. It just doesn't stack up to pay someone to sit around not selling potatoes in the French equivalent of Bumblefuck or Little Pissington on the Marsh.

Babdoc · 26/01/2022 14:47

Otherpeoplesteens, yes, it makes complete sense re wage costs, but I think it tickles my DC to see a vending machine for potatoes and nothing else!

More commonly, farmers send their produce to Farmers’ markets, or a large farm shop selling a wide range of local produce.

iklboo · 26/01/2022 15:56

@Ylvamoon - love potatoes cooked like that. Lots of herbs scattered over (especially rosemary), a lot little garlic. Perfect for making potato salad that way, too. DS will ask me to make him some for a snack.

LoveInTheFurDegree · 26/01/2022 15:57

@neverknowinglyunreasonable

I agree. I've got around this by moving the potatoes closer to my face so they appear bigger.
Ha ha ha! Made me snort.
