A colleague told me they took day off work to go on a coach trip. Aibu to think I should tell our manager?

A coach trip? Like a bus? Who willingly spends hours on a bus?

aristotlesdeathray · 24/01/2022 14:13

@GaiusHelenMohiam

So was it a sickie, or a day off?

It seems unlikely that someone would book a coach trip and then just call in sick for it.

Seems unlikely?

Pull the other one

@Toottooot

Ooh ya clipe.
Haven’t heard that in years 🤣🤣🤣

Especially for a one day trip
Babyroobs · 24/01/2022 14:15

@Margaret103

It did directly impact me as her workload was then added to mine so made my day extremely stressful
My colleague did similar just before xmas, leaving me having to do his work and had to let some of my own clients down. I expressed concerns, I think he has bene spoken to or had some kind of disciplinary. I also strongly suspect he lied about why he needed the day off.
Yellow85 · 24/01/2022 14:15

I mean I’d bank it for when I needed a favour or had ‘a dentist appointment’

Cissyandflora · 24/01/2022 14:16

@HunterHearstHelmsley

It seems odd that she would tell you that being as you were having to cover her.

I used to work with someone who used to twist things and report to management. One of the other staff used to tell her random crap like this (if they could prove it wasn't true) so she would report it and look like a dick.

Yes I was wondering if it’s something like this. Someone wanting drama and then making op look bad. Perhaps

Do it But be sneaky
TheBestofTimesTheWorstofTimes · 24/01/2022 14:25

Why are people saying "MYOB"? The colleague made it the OP's business by telling her. They didn't know by reading his/her mind.

Cant you happen to ask colleague about it when manager is around?

JudgeJ · 24/01/2022 14:27

@AmyDudley

Don't be a dobber - just book your own coach trip.
I recall when the Deputy Head from my school, when I was a pupil so back in the late 60s, took a day off to go to the Test match, he had a really good seat, almost on the front row, exactly where someone took a brilliant catch on the boundary, as shown on TV with many replays!

To be honest and employer that then doubles another employees workload probably deserves it. How do they expect you to do that? They sound like twats.
GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 24/01/2022 14:28

Think about it long-term. She is unlikely to be fired for a one-off offence, and then you have to continue working with her, with her knowing that you have grassed her up. Which could make life very awkward.

What did you do when she told you? I'd have said, "You owe me one then' and left it at that.

Next time, don't cover her workload; either share it with other colleagues or tell management they will have to make other arrangements.

Too right I'd tell.

That would piss me off.

ilovesooty · 24/01/2022 14:29

@MrsTimRiggins

Honestly, I probably still wouldn’t report her but I’d have told her at the time that I was fucked off and to not leave me in the shit again.
Same here.
trunktoes · 24/01/2022 14:31

None of your business

Certainly not.

You don't grass people up unless it's a question of violence or abuse of some kind for goodness sakes.

What would you get out of telling management they 'skived off' ? Your colleague presumably trusted you.

WhoWants2Know · 24/01/2022 14:32

If she did lie about being sick to go on her coach trip, it might be better to speak to her than your manager. As in' "you realise you really left me in the shit by doing that, right?" But generally people who do stuff like that don't give a shit anyway.

maddy68 · 24/01/2022 14:32

Nothing to do with you

@glassylady

Good for them. Don't be a snitch.
Good for them?

Why?

KissKissButtCheek · 24/01/2022 14:33

@NotImpossible

I hate this. Nobody should be so affected by their colleagues days off (sick or otherwise) that they end up with 2 people's work. It's poor management. Your colleague's days off are between them and their manager. Your workload is between you and your manager.
^^ this!
Croissantly · 24/01/2022 14:37

Just ask how her coach trip was loudly when she returns.

ChargingBuck · 24/01/2022 14:37

Grin "gloating knobbery" made my day @godmum56. Ta!

ilovesooty · 24/01/2022 14:37

@JudgeJ the Assistant Head where I was on teaching practice called in sick and went to the Wimbledon Ladies Quarter Finals. She was spotted on TV too.

itsgettingweird · 24/01/2022 14:39

I'm torn.

A colleague of mine frequently took Mondays off after BH due to illness. I knew they went camping.

One time been went abroad and quite happily told me.

It annoyed me but I felt like a child telling tales to keep quiet. They also got promoted. (But they were always and still are junior to me so I guess that didn't impact me neither?).

In the end I decided the fact they got away with it said more about management than them. They were dire at picking up any sickness especially patterns.

New management came in and they couldn't do this as were very hot on following absence policy. What happened is they couldn't sustain the workload of not doing this and ended up sick here and there for odd days. Always having sickness interviews and didn't like it so left.

So I guess saying something depends on how you think it impacted or will impact you in the future if she/he did it again and if you think saying something will make a difference.
