...to find living with a newly-minted coffee snob a pain?

The freezer is full of little foil packets of coffee beans (varying caffeine levels, roasting temperatures, countries of origin), there's a set of super-accurate scales, a deconstructed mini-grinder and Aeropress on the table, partially ground beans have shot off all over the kitchen side and floor...

Earlier he was putting a thermometer in the kettle. And then when it's finally poured into the Aeropress (from a Pyrex jug), he sets a timer. I think he drinks it faster than he makes it!

I usually use a cafetière, but I'm suddenly tempted to plonk a jar of Nescafé on the side in protest. Grin

If/when you do buy a jar of instant coffee, keep it upside down. That’s what the experts do enabling the aroma to be at its best.
I enjoy the cheapest coffee and also the best perked, but non of the mediocre. Oh well we all have different tastes.

I’m the same with cola - I don’t enjoy the market leaders yet the stores own brands suit my palette.

fetchacloth · 25/01/2022 19:09

OP, your OH would positively hate me.
My preference is a jar of Nescafe Gold Blend every time. Tastes great and sooooooo quick😁
Personally I couldn't be doing with the faffing with coffee pods, and other paraphernalia.

evilharpy · 25/01/2022 19:50

@BouleBaker

Could be worse. Cycling or a far flung football team obsession maybe.

As for the Aeropress, what am I doing wrong then? All the water dribbles out the bottom before I get the press bit in????

Look up the inverted method, I think that's what most people do. I certainly do. I love mine!
barkymcbarky · 25/01/2022 19:52

What a twat.

Morgysmum · 25/01/2022 19:55

It's so funny that they think they know it all, after reading a few books.
My FIL, is a wine snob, you have to drink x wine with starter, X wine with this course, blah blah. The best bit, was him explaining, that this wine was the best, from Italy, the pope blesses it, or drinks in it or pisses in it (something to do with the pipe) apparently, it's expensive and that's another reason it tastes wonderful. I don't drink, do I didn't try it, but rembered the name.
When we get home after Christmas, there is an advert for this wine, same name, on special offer at one of the supermarkets for £14:99! Which makes me laugh so much, there was FIL, saying it was worth £40 a bottle and it's not, 🤣🤣 it's something you can buy from a supermarket, not a posh winery.

Green light for the Nescafé, I'm a tea, total but when I have coffee, in sure all the fresh beans ect will make for a nice drink, but usually I prefer speed and drink over time taking a while to make the drink.

Nodding & chortling in sympathy OP (& to all other coffee widows) We used to have a nespresso machine that made lovely cups and capsules that suited everyone's tastes/strengths.Apparently though this is vvv NON U
In 2021 lock down DH worked out the amount we spent on pods daily with 4 avid coffee drinkers confined to barracks & thus he too emerged as a newly hatched coffee wanker.
He had done RESEARCH & wanged on about bean to cup being vastly superior/more economical in the long term, blah blah blah.......
We now have a Melitta all singing dancing thingy that needs a NASA engineer to operate. It has 2 hoppers, one for caff, another for decaf, multiple functions/buttons & a milk canister on the side. It needs special cleaning products & system procedural maintenance do-dah weekly as well as an app. It also cost enough to buy a second hand car... BUT it will PAY for itself in a YEAR ....allegedly....
I had to do a blind tasting test of different beans & strengths at his insistence & now we are only allowed to buy a set amount of coffee at at time to stop it going off too quickly. It MUST be stored in special air tight canisters. Hmm
It chugs and gurgles away and seems to need the drip tray cleaning multiple times a day. I just stab randomly at it and hope for the best when I want a coffee & DH isn't around to make it. On the plus side, he does bring me a cup first thing in the morning before I have to get out of bed and he clears up after himself. The 21 year old however is also borderline obsessed & barely manages to chuck a plate in the dishwasher, never mind clean anything else up....
DH is also a cycling wanker & car cleaning enthusiast with multiple accessories/products/specialist tools & cloths so I suppose I shouldn't really be surprised about the coffee carry on. He has applied similar research to all his 'passions' and it continues it to be an ever evolving, developing science. I should probably be grateful I haven't been 'upgraded' to a younger model... I blame the internet. Without it, people wouldn’t know about all this shit. Emperor’s new clothes!

Unescorted · 25/01/2022 21:01

Hides coffee machine, noisy grinder, sourdough starter, thermometer, Ooni, bicycles...I am quite about my obsessions and don't leave coffee grounds on the counter. After all where would I make my pastry or perfect my buttercream(s) and icing,?

ThistleTits · 25/01/2022 21:58

@FrankGrillosWrist

Only the best for him eh 🙄. Most of this stuff tastes like Camp coffee that we had years ago.
Lol my school was next to the camp coffee factory. Smell was vile.
N1no · 25/01/2022 22:46

My dad has had his for over 10 years and bakes 2 breads a week. It tastes amazing!

Crikeyalmighty · 25/01/2022 23:12

Mines a wine snob and likes his vinyl a lot too—

justasking111 · 25/01/2022 23:41

A friend is like this if you flit in for a quick visit always request tea, the coffee takes so long to create 😅😅

LoisLane66 · 26/01/2022 02:29

I got I to this fad about 3 years ago and have 2 Gaggia Classic machines, one used for hot chocolate and one for coffee. One is a beautiful brass machine with an enamelled relief of two coffee pots on the front in red and blue.
I had a personalised tamper made in Australia and also have an Italian stove top percolator.
I often resort to Nescafé Gold Cappuccino sachets if I can't be bothered to fuss.

WithABiffBangPow · 26/01/2022 06:31

My husband has 8 guitars in the house.
I wish he liked coffee instead.

RantyAunty · 26/01/2022 07:02

Are coffee snobs as obsessed and fiddly in the bedroom?

MummyWoodentop · 26/01/2022 07:16

I think it's clever American advertising - convince everyone it's something special. Produce v expensive gadgets to make it - people who have everything will decide they need this too.

MummyWoodentop · 26/01/2022 07:58

The best coffee was a sugary expreso sitting outside in the town square in a sunny French village.

hivemindneeded · 26/01/2022 08:05

Tricky. I love coffee so much I'd be delighted to try all the new ones. But the faff. I couldn't do with being made to wait 30 mins for my coffee in the morning. I love cafetiere coffee anyway, so I'd leave him to it and make my own. And he'd have to clear up the coffee grinds that scatter. Crumbs and grit on work surfaces set my teeth on edge.

Petlover9 · 26/01/2022 14:41

@TooManyPJs

Stuff the Nescafé; get out the Mellow Birds.
You have taken me back years! Used to love that, but can't drink much coffee now
ProseccoOnSafari · 30/01/2022 04:52

Please, please, please start making your Nescafé coffee at the same time when he is faffing about with his Aeropress and thermometer and stand on the side drinking it whilst watching him and video the whole thing!! I love good coffee, but this would seriously fuck me right off!

ProseccoOnSafari · 30/01/2022 04:54

Smile It really is the little, simple things which make life that much more enjoyable! Smile
