...to find living with a newly-minted coffee snob a pain?

The freezer is full of little foil packets of coffee beans (varying caffeine levels, roasting temperatures, countries of origin), there's a set of super-accurate scales, a deconstructed mini-grinder and Aeropress on the table, partially ground beans have shot off all over the kitchen side and floor...

Earlier he was putting a thermometer in the kettle. And then when it's finally poured into the Aeropress (from a Pyrex jug), he sets a timer. I think he drinks it faster than he makes it!

I usually use a cafetière, but I'm suddenly tempted to plonk a jar of Nescafé on the side in protest. Grin

Our kettle has different temperature settings from 60-100 degrees. bought so that I could make the perfect hot Vimto/Ribena. No need for kettle thermometers, unless I am missing a trick?

Well, obviously you do need one if your kettle (like 99.9% of kettles) doesn’t have temperature settings that allow you to use it to not boil water…

We bought a bean to cup machine, which I wanted, but DH insists the stronger the coffee the better. Now I like strong coffee to a degree, but he seems blinded by the numbers and we have a 6 strength beans that's just so bitter.

@tiredanddangerous

Life is too short for this shit.
Exactly this!
NewlyPassed · 24/01/2022 08:42

Are you annoyed at the faff or the mess?
Easy solution for the second, get him to clean it up. Shouldn’t impact your life at all

DoTheyKnowItsLemonJuice · 24/01/2022 08:43

I've had a builder turn up and had to apologise because I have no idea whatsoever how to make him a coffee. Turned out he was a coffee wanker too and he had a great time pressing buttons and sampling DH's wares.

/cries about the coffee in the freezer 😭

LadyPropane · 24/01/2022 08:50

My DH does stuff like this. Not with coffee, but plenty of other things. He's obsessed with making things perfectly and monitoring and observing everything to be sure that it is just right.

If you can persuade them to channel it into something useful (I went for cooking) then it's actually quite a bearable trait to have to live with.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 24/01/2022 08:56

YANBU at all.

I am very relieved that my Aussie DH, while snobby about coffee he gets from coffee shops etc., still drinks basic instant at home and has so far avoided even wanting to get a nobby coffee maker that requires pods of any kind.
We have a Bialette (stove top coffee espresso maker) and a Bodum plunger jug, but even they don't come out of the cupboard regularly!

Could not be doing with the level of fuss your DH seems to have developed!

And the pp who says pizzas cooked in the normal oven are as good as the Ooni is being VVVU. Ooni pizzas are amazing! And only take a minute to cook.
That was me @ginandplatonic - they do taste nice, and they take a minute to cook.....but.....he hand stretches the dough so has to do it for one at a time....tops them....is currently still 'perfecting the process' - so at the moment it is very very painful and no fun. (He did buy some special mesh tray things to make more than one at a time to speed up the cooking but then they aren't baked directly on the stone so the base isn't as delicious, and the pizza stuck to the mesh...so they are being confined to the garage I think....with the massive box of wood that was a complete bargain as cheaper than ooni branded wood....but is actually great big logs....)

Mumdiva99 · 24/01/2022 09:00

@ElftonWednesday

I'd continue to use my faff free bean to cup machine and let him get on with it.
No one likes boasting @elftonwednesday Grin - I lust after a bean to cup....
RoseDog · 24/01/2022 09:00

He uses a thermometer in the kettle?? Does he not own a digital gooseneck kettle?? He sounds like an amateur. My dp is a coffee cunt with various devices that take up space in the kitchen.

I loves my pink tassimo machine, me and him are very different people Confused

Coffee snobs are the worst Grin About twice a year I get a cat groomer. The first time this guy came over I offered him a drink. The conversation went a bit like this:

What would you like? I can offer various teas, juices, hot chocolate or water.
Do you have coffee?
No just the drinks I mentioned above.
I guess I can make do with instant.
I do not have any type of coffee in my house.

Ginandplatonic · 24/01/2022 09:11

@Mumdiva99 😂 it is a bit of a faff I have to agree and I haven’t yet perfected a way to prepare them all at once without them sticking to whatever they’re on. But the results are worth it.

My DH once tried to make a dessert pizza with, amongst other things, chocolate and marshmallows. It was less than successful - the marshmallows almost instantly caught fire, which burned the chocolate which melted all over the stone. So we ended up with an inedible pizza - incompletely cooked base covered in charred sugar, burned marshmallow on the top of the oven, and burned marshmallow mixed with chocolate which set like cement on the stone. 🙄

thisplaceisweird · 24/01/2022 09:19

Ohh just let him enjoy his hobby and enjoy your lovely coffee! As long as he cleans it up and pays for the stuff who cares.

DontBlameMe79 · 24/01/2022 09:21

The Aeropress is brilliant !!!

So much to unpick here.

Firstly, travelling cat groomers are a thing?!

I’d love to see a venn diagram with coffee snobs and cat groomers.

@Preemptedyou - in your favour, it was 6:30 am! Grin Thanks

I'm honestly about as far from hipster as you can imagine! I just really like tasty coffee. my brother though would fit right in on this thread, and he has that pizza oven thing too!

Mumdiva99 · 24/01/2022 09:33

@ginandplatonic glad it's not just him and we have missed an obvious trick.
Thanks for the warning about sweet pizzas.
What he really wants to do is cook his steak in the pizza oven!! So far I have said no because I'm worried about steak flavour pizza.....but the kids tell me dad's just waiting for a day I go out and will try it then.....going with the 'what she doesn't know won't hurt her' school of thinking. Grin

theruffles · 24/01/2022 09:36

I love coffee but just have a cafetiere and various nice ground coffees we keep in the fridge. I do turn my nose up at instant coffee but I'm glad we don't have all the gadgets and grinders for making fancier coffee littering up the kitchen.

My DH got into tofu and we now own a tofu press which I didn't even know was a thing but apparently it's great...?

Crimesean · 24/01/2022 09:39

There's a brilliant routine that Dara O'Briain does, about young people who are obsessed with [insert new obsession here] and will whang on about "THIS is the best album", or "wines from THIS region are the best", "THIS coffee bean in the best" - he says that once you've grown up a bit, it sounds exactly like a six-year-old saying "A stegosaurus is the BEST dinosaur" Grin

2catsandhappy · 24/01/2022 09:39

Didn't Spar used to do an own brand coffee and chicory blend?

tenredthings · 24/01/2022 09:40

I think you could see in this that life is evidently going so well for him that he can waste time and money on this little luxury. Celebrate the good times !

seekinglondonlife · 24/01/2022 09:41

It could be worse OP, someone on another coffee thread said she's on a coffee Facebook group and someone has a spreadsheet with ratios of how much of each bottled water they use per cup.

RainingYetAgain · 24/01/2022 09:43

Oh don't!
DS1 hand grinds his own coffee beans and has a dinky set of scales for accurate weighing. If I am going to the deli that roasts their own coffee I get texts specifying different beans to buy. Thank goodness he is moving out soon, but he can leave the Aeropress behind.
DS2 prefers fancy teas- so when he is home life involves checking for Oolong or which Sensha is current favourite. He did introduce us to a tea pot with an inbuilt filter thing which is great for Jasmine tea when we have Chinese.
We just have to have a kettle which heats to various temperatures. DH moans the temperatures aren't low enough for bread making. I dread the day he decides to try sour dough again.
Where did I go wrong?
