To think that this Etsy items have to be a piss take

I used to love Etsy for lovely handmade or bespoke items but there’s more overpriced shite on there these days than anything else.

I give you:
Pink sequinned raving trousers for men www.etsy.com/uk/listing/905823261/mens-rave-pants-pink-sequin-trousers?utm_term=Apparel+%26+Accessories&utm_medium=display_product&utm_source=Facebook&utm_campaign=uk_pros_daba_olfv2rev&utm_content=domestic_toppower_combined_listing&utm_custom2=23845226411560123&fbclid=IwAR0xzbXWzNNS6poxyjpNL-ex0LtvLE2OeN5PmXeO6tl2pg4C9rebboy9EnM_aem_AULU0iqg9MgPpZWDj0RdPAC_8K54-o1TvZ7S6uGxOvk4XSRDelnnsQENLK_gTEuNyPuWp5jRqJamJVbhCtPvSWxjdIZti9j00RY3JY3MLb4v5i6QMl2M3rZtdXfTt_693DM

Baubles hanging off a tie rack for £75 www.etsy.com/uk/listing/256931750/drag-racing-startline-christmas-tree?utm_term=Home+%26+Garden&utm_medium=display_product&utm_source=Facebook&utm_campaign=uk_pros_daba_olfv2rev&utm_content=domestic_toppower_combined_listing&utm_custom2=23845226411560123&fbclid=IwAR2wcR7fWknc2vca0obU_JQZjkcxsVJZBt79TF5lDKmZRkDpklUDuygWqpQ_aem_AULU0iqg9MgPpZWDj0RdPAC_8K54-o1TvZ7S6uGxOvk4XSRDelnnsQENLK_gTEuNyPuWp5jRqJamJVbhCtPvSWxjdIZti9j00RY3JY3MLb4v5i6QMl2M3rZtdXfTt_693DM

A magic wand with Googly eyes for £50. Pretty sure my kids have made very similar on rainy days from the crap at the bottom of their craft box www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1074692986/green-googly-eye-stiletto-handmade-magic?utm_term=Apparel+%26+Accessories&utm_medium=display_product&utm_source=Facebook&utm_campaign=uk_pros_daba_olfv2rev&utm_content=domestic_toppower_combined_listing&utm_custom2=23845226411560123&fbclid=IwAR21cgswfLgl3AhpuhfeAg7WnhrOiZnj-P7SWYMqwbPiCwVWC3BeOQk1dMc_aem_AULU0iqg9MgPpZWDj0RdPAC_8K54-o1TvZ7S6uGxOvk4XSRDelnnsQENLK_gTEuNyPuWp5jRqJamJVbhCtPvSWxjdIZti9j00RY3JY3MLb4v5i6QMl2M3rZtdXfTt_693DM

And last but not least for £20 you can purchase, straight from the multipack aisles of Poundland and Iceland, a ‘bouquet’ of crisps worth about £1.20 www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1017488141/crisp-chocolate-bouquet?ref=sim_items_grid-9&frs=1

I've started to get alot of etsy adverts on my socsil media and they are the strangest things! I can't even tell what half of them are supposed to be!!

AuntyBumBum · 23/01/2022 13:47

@Dilemma22

Saw this on Etsy the other day…
Haha! I just looked it up. For £138 you don't actually get a physical picture to hang on your wall. Just a "digital download" of you photoshopped into a slightly creepy picture with Jesus. However, Jesus can be photoshopped into your wedding, which has got to be worth it Grin
SuitcaseOfWhine · 23/01/2022 13:52

@JustYourAverageSue

This one on Not On The High Street got me at Christmas. £12.99 for the Orange, an extra £3 for the name to be put on it, £3.99 for the gift box, and then almost £4 for delivery. So a grand total of almost £24 for one chocolate orange. 🙄 Lots of reviews about how wonderful and well received the gift was. Personally, I'd rather have 24 non personalised ones. 🤣
The reviews must be fake. I don't know anyone who would pay £24 for that and anyone with a lot of money would not part with£24 either.

I think some people are a bit deluded.

For the wand one, although 100 people have it in their baskets, I think it is just to bookmark it so they can show it to their friends.

ConsuelaHammock · 23/01/2022 14:25

Love the sparkly trousers. I’ve noticed a lot of tat from AliExpress on Etsy being described as ‘ handmade ‘ . Yes handmade in China but not by you.

Binglebong · 23/01/2022 14:27

Do bear in mind that when you see the exact same product on wish there's a fair chance it's only the exact same picture. Bernadette Banner did a video where they stole a picture of her work and did a side by side of what actually came.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 23/01/2022 14:39

I mean, the wand looks a little, erm…specialist but those trousers are marvellous! I’d totally wear those to a festival.

As for the turkey teddy bear, what on earth possessed the maker to think that is a good idea? Could you imagine serving up a a baked bear to your now-traumatised children?! It’s like Frankenstein was let loose on Pooh…

BlowDryRat · 23/01/2022 14:44

I'm so glad I read your second post before I commented on the vulva crystals. DH and I had a good laugh at the reviews. I might buy a couple for friends...

BlowDryRat · 23/01/2022 14:45

Oops, that was to @Littlewhiteballs. Listing: www.etsy.com/uk/listing/936769948/vulva-crystal-vagina-crystal-yoni?ref=shop_home_active_29&frs=1

pepperaunt · 23/01/2022 14:58

I have a lovely talented friend who had an Etsy jewellery shop for years. She got so frustrated at all of the cheap Chinese tat overwhelming her listing that she’s shut down her business. I get sad whenever I see her listing for materials she no longer needs.

Gilly12345 · 23/01/2022 15:07

Omg that stuff is awful, no wonder people who buy such shite complain of having no money.

A fool and his money are easily parted 😂😂😂😂

stitchy · 23/01/2022 15:19

I have had that wand appear as an advert on my FB repeatedly - I must be their target market, weird because I have zero interest in magic or shite crafted by a hot glue gun artisan

Binglebong · 23/01/2022 16:23

Ffs I'm now getting followed by adverts for that wand and others by the seller.

LadyPoison · 23/01/2022 16:43

@raffys

This is so frustrating, I've had a shop on Etsy for 6 years and unfortunately Etsy have allowed more and more mass produced stuff on over the last few years. Those authentic Etsy sellers that are hand making everything and trying really hard to give something a bit unique are still out there though I promise!
Yes - my Etsy shop is empty and I won't be using it again.

I make unique OOAK hand crafted sterling silver jewellery and I'm just crowded out by the cheap mass produced rubbish, a lot of it purporting to be sterling but in reality anything but.

I was wondering whether to give Folksy a go but I'm not sure it gets the numbers visiting to make it worth the bother

Bearwiththehairs · 23/01/2022 16:45

I like the trousers 🤷🏼‍♀️

IrritableOwlSyndrome · 23/01/2022 17:16

@DrBlackbird

Bloody hell. Apparently over 100 buyers have those wands in their baskets at this point in time. That wand seller has the last laugh given they’re each £40. Clever businesswoman!
I'm suspicious of this too, I think it's gimmick to make people impulse buy in case it sells out.

A bit like the thing I used to see where a pop up would say "Tes Jones in Leeds has just bought this item"

Littlewhiteballs · 23/01/2022 17:18

@BlowDryRat I've had many orders where people have bought them as joke presents. Sometimes they include a personal message with the order. I won't repeat them here but some have really made me giggle!

Thelikelylass · 23/01/2022 17:20

@SmashingBIouse

Whenever I see threads on internet tat (whether it's from eBay/Etsy/Facebook) I'm reminded of this.
The Silence of the Turkeys.
Shadappayourface · 23/01/2022 17:29

Agreed!

I tried looking for some personalised baby clothes recently - there used to be lots of sellers who hand-made tops, trousers and babygros with material of your choosing or the seasonal material they had in stock.

Now when I look for personalised baby clothing I find tacky baby clothes with personalised "Jayden" and "Courtney Mae" names printed on them. The kind that people sell to their mates on Facebook.

LadyPoison · 23/01/2022 17:34

@KatherineofGaunt

mademe.co.uk/ is like the original etsy, trying to keep it handmade, UK makers.
Thank you for this - Just signed up and uploaded a pendent to start with. I'll add a few more later.

I'm prepared to risk £25 for a shop front there :). Let's hope it catches on

JugglingJanuary · 23/01/2022 17:52
@drinkingwineoutofamug No way! Thank you 🤗

When I first opened the shop I ordered a box of carved crystals from Alibaba. Hearts, wands, cabochons, etc. What actually showed up was a box of carved crystal vulvas. I made a thread about it! I was ready to send it back but a few mumsnetters actually asked to buy them so I listed them and they've been there ever since. I've probably appeared in a few 'wtf is this?' posts on various forums for my crystal fannies.
I did think WTF, but decided nothing good could come of being bitchy about them for a laugh.

AsYouWishButtercup · 23/01/2022 17:55

@GreenerWithTheScenery

I used to sell on etsy. I gave up when I realised that my genuinely hand made jewellery could never compete in price with the amount of cheap Chinese crap other sellers were passing off as 'handmade'.

It really really irritated me. One seller had dozens of necklaces bought for pennies on Aliexpress, each one in an organza bag with a 'made with love' label and marked up at £20. Etsy of course did bugger all about it.

Not on the high street is exactly the same. Should be renamed 'On the high street in China'.

It’s actually infuriating and I’m seriously disappointed in Etsy for selling out

SpikeySmooth · 23/01/2022 18:24

Etsy used to be a bit posher than eBay but not as posh as Not on the High Street. I used to buy a lot of birthday cards from Etsy. Now though, the quality has gone down and you don't get anything different or quirky than anywhere else. Tat, in essence.

Having said that, on a good man's figure, the trousers are ace.

RoseSays · 23/01/2022 18:58

@RobertaFirmino

The man in the pink sequinned trousers looks fantastic! I bet he would go down a storm in a gay club!
He is just right!
