To think that this Etsy items have to be a piss take

I used to love Etsy for lovely handmade or bespoke items but there’s more overpriced shite on there these days than anything else.

I give you:
Pink sequinned raving trousers for men www.etsy.com/uk/listing/905823261/mens-rave-pants-pink-sequin-trousers?utm_term=Apparel+%26+Accessories&utm_medium=display_product&utm_source=Facebook&utm_campaign=uk_pros_daba_olfv2rev&utm_content=domestic_toppower_combined_listing&utm_custom2=23845226411560123&fbclid=IwAR0xzbXWzNNS6poxyjpNL-ex0LtvLE2OeN5PmXeO6tl2pg4C9rebboy9EnM_aem_AULU0iqg9MgPpZWDj0RdPAC_8K54-o1TvZ7S6uGxOvk4XSRDelnnsQENLK_gTEuNyPuWp5jRqJamJVbhCtPvSWxjdIZti9j00RY3JY3MLb4v5i6QMl2M3rZtdXfTt_693DM

Baubles hanging off a tie rack for £75 www.etsy.com/uk/listing/256931750/drag-racing-startline-christmas-tree?utm_term=Home+%26+Garden&utm_medium=display_product&utm_source=Facebook&utm_campaign=uk_pros_daba_olfv2rev&utm_content=domestic_toppower_combined_listing&utm_custom2=23845226411560123&fbclid=IwAR2wcR7fWknc2vca0obU_JQZjkcxsVJZBt79TF5lDKmZRkDpklUDuygWqpQ_aem_AULU0iqg9MgPpZWDj0RdPAC_8K54-o1TvZ7S6uGxOvk4XSRDelnnsQENLK_gTEuNyPuWp5jRqJamJVbhCtPvSWxjdIZti9j00RY3JY3MLb4v5i6QMl2M3rZtdXfTt_693DM

A magic wand with Googly eyes for £50. Pretty sure my kids have made very similar on rainy days from the crap at the bottom of their craft box www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1074692986/green-googly-eye-stiletto-handmade-magic?utm_term=Apparel+%26+Accessories&utm_medium=display_product&utm_source=Facebook&utm_campaign=uk_pros_daba_olfv2rev&utm_content=domestic_toppower_combined_listing&utm_custom2=23845226411560123&fbclid=IwAR21cgswfLgl3AhpuhfeAg7WnhrOiZnj-P7SWYMqwbPiCwVWC3BeOQk1dMc_aem_AULU0iqg9MgPpZWDj0RdPAC_8K54-o1TvZ7S6uGxOvk4XSRDelnnsQENLK_gTEuNyPuWp5jRqJamJVbhCtPvSWxjdIZti9j00RY3JY3MLb4v5i6QMl2M3rZtdXfTt_693DM

And last but not least for £20 you can purchase, straight from the multipack aisles of Poundland and Iceland, a ‘bouquet’ of crisps worth about £1.20 www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1017488141/crisp-chocolate-bouquet?ref=sim_items_grid-9&frs=1

@drinkingwineoutofamug No way! Thank you 🤗

When I first opened the shop I ordered a box of carved crystals from Alibaba. Hearts, wands, cabochons, etc. What actually showed up was a box of carved crystal vulvas. I made a thread about it! I was ready to send it back but a few mumsnetters actually asked to buy them so I listed them and they've been there ever since. I've probably appeared in a few 'wtf is this?' posts on various forums for my crystal fannies.

AsYouWishButtercup · 23/01/2022 10:32

@JustYourAverageSue

This one on Not On The High Street got me at Christmas. £12.99 for the Orange, an extra £3 for the name to be put on it, £3.99 for the gift box, and then almost £4 for delivery. So a grand total of almost £24 for one chocolate orange. 🙄 Lots of reviews about how wonderful and well received the gift was. Personally, I'd rather have 24 non personalised ones. 🤣
Absolutely! Also that wouldn’t be that hard to recreate with melted white chocolate and a bit of piping!

Yes I ordered 2 of your vulvas 😂 you may remember my message that my partner thought it was a slice of black pudding 😂😂😂

@DisforDarkChocolate

I feel the same about Etsy. Definitely losing its USP.
I agree. I have a regular Carnatic maker who I’ve bought vases, candle holders, Christmas decorations etc off for years. But if you search for ceramic vase the mass produced tat shows up which is a shame because the lady I sue makes everything from scratch and is extremely talented

CuriousaboutSamphire · 23/01/2022 10:36

YABVU. They have found a niche market and are selling to it. That looks like well made stuff, not the knitted yoghurt, crocheted fog kind of crap I expected to see.

Or is this a sneaky advertisement?

AsYouWishButtercup · 23/01/2022 10:38

@DrBlackbird

Bloody hell. Apparently over 100 buyers have those wands in their baskets at this point in time. That wand seller has the last laugh given they’re each £40. Clever businesswoman!
I reckon that, similar to being able to purchase ‘fake views’ on Youtube you can probably buy fake buyers on Etsy! That’s a more plausible explanation than people actually spending £50 on a plastic wand.

I will concede on the trousers though - the more I look at them the more I think “actually I’m going to that festival in June…” Grin

Earlier post should say use not sue. I promise I don’t sue my Etsy sellers!

@stitchy

I knew that googly eye weird plastic asparagus 'wand' would be involved when I saw the thread title!
How have you seen this before?? Is it a weird sex toy??
WhoWants2Know · 23/01/2022 10:50

@LuckyMeISeeGhosts

What's wrong with the trousers?
They aren't exactly handmade. More likely mass produced in China.
inheritancetrack · 23/01/2022 10:54

I have an Etsy shop and my price are very reasonable and my work quality good, but my listings have fallen off a cliff and it's full of tat and rip offs. Totally agree and feel sorry for the wonderful artisans producing amazing goods

SmashingBIouse · 23/01/2022 10:55

Whenever I see threads on internet tat (whether it's from eBay/Etsy/Facebook) I'm reminded of this.

KatherineofGaunt · 23/01/2022 11:00

mademe.co.uk/ is like the original etsy, trying to keep it handmade, UK makers.

HaroldMeeker · 23/01/2022 11:01

I had a shop on Etsy for 6 or 7 years and it was originally brilliant. The decision to allow things made in factories on the site meant I left. I now sell on Folksy.com, a UK based online marketplace. Way smaller marketplace but it suits my products. All those who miss the old etsy format should take a peek.

brunonononono · 23/01/2022 11:05

I like the trousers Grin

The other bits of tat though Shock

Anyone remember that terrible handmade Christmas centrepiece on an eBay tat thread that was asking for 600 quid

AuntyBumBum · 23/01/2022 11:14

Love the fact that the googly-eyed plastic green wand says "Rare find - this item is hard to come by". Could this perhaps be because it's shit, and no one wants one? Something tells me that if Witchywandawoowoo got an order for 500 she'd manage to find them from somewhere Grin

Thanks for the tip. I'm thinking of setting up an Etsy shop but have been put off by some of the stuff on there. I just ordered a yoga mat bag and it's really cheap, flimsy, poor quality. Very annoyed I've been ripped off.
shinynewapple22 · 23/01/2022 11:19

I remember that thread @Littlewhiteballs - a mumsnet classic!

That is gross 🤢

StorminaBcup · 23/01/2022 11:54

Jesus that teddy bear turkey Shock

Here you go kids, come and watch this cute bear be cremated and then carved up in front of your very eyes. Merry Christmas Confused

Those sequin trousers are great but if anyone remembers actually raving in anything with sequins, will remember the chafing that occurs after 12 hours of solid dancing. I had a tiny Miss Moneypenny’s sequinned dress that used to shred the top of my underarms!

What is this abomination!
Shehasadiamondinthesky · 23/01/2022 12:03

I can think of a few male friends of mine who would go for the trousers but then I live in Glastonbury!!

The rest are trash. Especially the wand - what the hell is that?

I buy all my gifts off etsy but some of the stuff is outrageous. How I miss the regretsy blog.

Dilemma22 · 23/01/2022 12:13

Saw this on Etsy the other day…

To think that this Etsy items have to be a piss take
GreenerWithTheScenery · 23/01/2022 12:15

I used to sell on etsy. I gave up when I realised that my genuinely hand made jewellery could never compete in price with the amount of cheap Chinese crap other sellers were passing off as 'handmade'.

It really really irritated me. One seller had dozens of necklaces bought for pennies on Aliexpress, each one in an organza bag with a 'made with love' label and marked up at £20. Etsy of course did bugger all about it.

Not on the high street is exactly the same. Should be renamed 'On the high street in China'.

Wafflesnsniffles · 23/01/2022 12:26

What the heck is a "Drag Racing Startline Christmas Tree Santa Claus Raceway" ?? Im baffled!
