To think that this Etsy items have to be a piss take

I used to love Etsy for lovely handmade or bespoke items but there’s more overpriced shite on there these days than anything else.

I give you:
Pink sequinned raving trousers for men www.etsy.com/uk/listing/905823261/mens-rave-pants-pink-sequin-trousers?utm_term=Apparel+%26+Accessories&utm_medium=display_product&utm_source=Facebook&utm_campaign=uk_pros_daba_olfv2rev&utm_content=domestic_toppower_combined_listing&utm_custom2=23845226411560123&fbclid=IwAR0xzbXWzNNS6poxyjpNL-ex0LtvLE2OeN5PmXeO6tl2pg4C9rebboy9EnM_aem_AULU0iqg9MgPpZWDj0RdPAC_8K54-o1TvZ7S6uGxOvk4XSRDelnnsQENLK_gTEuNyPuWp5jRqJamJVbhCtPvSWxjdIZti9j00RY3JY3MLb4v5i6QMl2M3rZtdXfTt_693DM

Baubles hanging off a tie rack for £75 www.etsy.com/uk/listing/256931750/drag-racing-startline-christmas-tree?utm_term=Home+%26+Garden&utm_medium=display_product&utm_source=Facebook&utm_campaign=uk_pros_daba_olfv2rev&utm_content=domestic_toppower_combined_listing&utm_custom2=23845226411560123&fbclid=IwAR2wcR7fWknc2vca0obU_JQZjkcxsVJZBt79TF5lDKmZRkDpklUDuygWqpQ_aem_AULU0iqg9MgPpZWDj0RdPAC_8K54-o1TvZ7S6uGxOvk4XSRDelnnsQENLK_gTEuNyPuWp5jRqJamJVbhCtPvSWxjdIZti9j00RY3JY3MLb4v5i6QMl2M3rZtdXfTt_693DM

A magic wand with Googly eyes for £50. Pretty sure my kids have made very similar on rainy days from the crap at the bottom of their craft box www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1074692986/green-googly-eye-stiletto-handmade-magic?utm_term=Apparel+%26+Accessories&utm_medium=display_product&utm_source=Facebook&utm_campaign=uk_pros_daba_olfv2rev&utm_content=domestic_toppower_combined_listing&utm_custom2=23845226411560123&fbclid=IwAR21cgswfLgl3AhpuhfeAg7WnhrOiZnj-P7SWYMqwbPiCwVWC3BeOQk1dMc_aem_AULU0iqg9MgPpZWDj0RdPAC_8K54-o1TvZ7S6uGxOvk4XSRDelnnsQENLK_gTEuNyPuWp5jRqJamJVbhCtPvSWxjdIZti9j00RY3JY3MLb4v5i6QMl2M3rZtdXfTt_693DM

And last but not least for £20 you can purchase, straight from the multipack aisles of Poundland and Iceland, a ‘bouquet’ of crisps worth about £1.20 www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1017488141/crisp-chocolate-bouquet?ref=sim_items_grid-9&frs=1

@AsYouWishButtercup The guy in those trousers looks amazing! ❤️ DH and I have tickets to see Elton John and I keep telling DH that it’s the done thing that everyone wears a pretty OTT outfit like Elton. I keep telling him he needs to wear a sequin jacket and wild glasses and I can see his nerves building (he obviously doesn’t but he’s so convinced I’m telling the truth) 🤣 I’m honesty tempted to but those trousers for him just to see his face 🤣 “Ohh, I knew you weren’t sure about a jacket so I thought you might feel more comfortable in these with a plain top?” 🤣

I agree with you though OP. Some of the stuff on Etsy at the moment is crazy 😳 I have a few sellers that I buy from regularly and have done for years but looking for anything new can take a good while to filter through all the shite like those wands 🤣🤣

truthfullylying · 23/01/2022 06:38

The trousers and alternative christmas tree are just a taste thing aren't they? If you are keen on sequin trousers for clubbing or drag racing they make sense.

JustYourAverageSue · 23/01/2022 07:39

This one on Not On The High Street got me at Christmas. £12.99 for the Orange, an extra £3 for the name to be put on it, £3.99 for the gift box, and then almost £4 for delivery. So a grand total of almost £24 for one chocolate orange. 🙄
Lots of reviews about how wonderful and well received the gift was. Personally, I'd rather have 24 non personalised ones. 🤣

@raffys

This is so frustrating, I've had a shop on Etsy for 6 years and unfortunately Etsy have allowed more and more mass produced stuff on over the last few years. Those authentic Etsy sellers that are hand making everything and trying really hard to give something a bit unique are still out there though I promise!
I agree. I too have an Etsy shop and sell things I make. Actually make. From raw materials. Using tools. Not assemble by clipping two pre made bits together.

I wish Etsy would go back to its roots and allow only actual handmade things plus supplies.

Mummyoflittledragon · 23/01/2022 08:17

YANBU
Congratulations on making a thread, where no poster wants to buy any of the items. Grin. I just wonder who is buying these things? A fair chunk of mumsnetters are an older demographic. Would it be millennials and younger then? They’ve never known a world, where choice for everything was so limited.

QuiteAtALoss · 23/01/2022 08:20
@raffys I shopped with Etsy from the start and have bought some amazing things over the years, that people always comment on when coming to the house. I have noticed in the last few months that it’s slowly turning into a more Amazon/Facebook Marketplace hybrid though with any old tat being flogged.
Everything is turning into to the same copies of each other, isn't it? All big websites/social media/selling sites seem to be the same! Bizarre.

DisforDarkChocolate · 23/01/2022 08:25

I feel the same about Etsy. Definitely losing its USP.

Cannyshite · 23/01/2022 08:29

You can still find some authentically hand made things but yes you do have to scroll through so much crap. Such a shame as it’s been my go-to place.

Tanfastic · 23/01/2022 08:31

It is a shame, I have an Etsy shop that does really well selling my handmade stuff.

I think it's because a lot of people that sell their tat on eBay are closing their shops and coming over to Etsy unfortunately. The terms are much better on Etsy for eg I don't get penalised if I get an order at one minute to midnight and don't have time to post it the following day 😳. It was putting me under far too much pressure when I also had an eBay shop. I've since closed eBay and don't regret it. I don't sell tat by the way!

LetHimHaveIt · 23/01/2022 08:33

Well, you've erred with the trousers OP. They're great.

Everything else m, you're bang on the money and I'm genuinely surprised at Etsy. The wand I just . . . can't. WHO IS BUYING THOSE?

Flocon · 23/01/2022 08:37

The whole point of etsy for me is you find those niche items. It might not be for you. The items might not sell but they might be exactly what someone is looking for. The sparkly sequin trousers look to be from a seller that specialises in sequin clothes.

Hadenoughofthisbullshit · 23/01/2022 08:41

@LuckyMeISeeGhosts

What's wrong with the trousers?
Nothing.

I’ve always thought of Etsy as a forum for small independent UK sellers. My DC saw these ‘handmade’ jumpers and ordered one. I became suspicious when DC was told it would take 6 weeks to be shipped. Checked the buyer and sure enough it’s coming from China. Lesson learnt not to make assumptions now. So difficult when you want to support independents and reduce travel miles.
Littlewhiteballs · 23/01/2022 08:53

The trainers are fabulous and look well made, nothing wrong with them. I don't get the baubles and the wand looks like a but plug.

I have an Etsy shop and it's so bloody hard to get your items viewed when the site is flooded with mass produced tat from China. Most people know to avoid it, but I bloody wish Etsy would put a stop to it as its putting potential buyers off!

Shameless self-promotion 👇

Littlewhiteballs · 23/01/2022 08:55

Also, sellers can see how many views their listings get, so the makers of the baubles and asparagus wand must be feeling a little puzzled right now!

fedup078 · 23/01/2022 08:55

I've also had the google eye wand suggested AND the creepy furby creations which seem to be 'a thing'
It's getting like wish.com for the random suggestions

DrSbaitso · 23/01/2022 08:56

Oh, Etsy can do better than that, trust me.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 23/01/2022 08:58

I offered DH a pair of those trousers, he said no. Have also seen the wands and elongated furbies. Why doesn’t Etsy show us things we might buy? Perhaps people clicking on the weird shit is messing up their algorithms?

Hb12 · 23/01/2022 08:59

I love Etsy still, I shop there regularly. But you do have to sift through more and more tat sadly.

DrBlackbird · 23/01/2022 09:01

Bloody hell. Apparently over 100 buyers have those wands in their baskets at this point in time. That wand seller has the last laugh given they’re each £40. Clever businesswoman!

Cubit · 23/01/2022 09:04

The crisp bouquet 😂😂😂

@MrPoppysParka the elongated furby thing came up on my news feed too, glad it's not just me! I was beginning to worry it was a targeted ad and wondered what in earth in my browsing history gave the impression I might want to order one of those. 🤣

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 23/01/2022 09:04

A few people I know really like those chocolate bouquets. If I was given one I'd just think, there is so much wasteful packaging in this. Just buy me a big bar of chocolate rather than loads of little ones all individually wrapped and then wrapped in card and tissue and cellophane and ribbon. No need.

I agree, there are a lot of drop shippers on there now and although you can report, Etsy do bugger all about it. Very annoying as a seller.

I believe I have bought of you in the past.
I love Etsy, but agree a lot of tat as appeared of late.
It's my go to place for birthday/Christmas, hand made cards and something that little bit different.
