To forward face my carsick toddler?

DC1 is 2.5. A few months ago we forked out for an expensive rear facing car seat that we were hoping would keep him safe for a long time (axkid minikid). He's always been rear facing, but a month ago he suddenly developed awful travel sickness. Even the 5 minute drive to nursery has on several occasions caused him to be sick, especially when in stop start traffic.

Is there anything I can do? We chose a rear facing seat as I'm fully aware of how much safer it is, but I can't face him throwing up for every small car journey we make. He's still so young he doesn't even understand to be sick in a bag etc so just ends up throwing up all over himself and the car, and I just feel so bad for him.

This sounds difficult OP. My daughter is the same age and we have the same car seat. I get how much you want to keep your child rear facing. However you definitely need to weigh up the risks and the stress of having to turn and check if your child has been sick which is probably more dangerous being distracted/constantly distracted.

In the short term, can you try:
Opening the window a crack?
Trying a mirror so he can see you?
A dvd player or tablet to distract him?
Books or toys or music player?

Sorry if you've done any of these already, just might help a little.
If they're still not working, it would definitely be worth considering FF. (I'm saying this as a big advocate of RF, my daughter still is and my eldest did until 4.5)

I forward faced from one and we've had no issues. I had a bump on the motorway and there were no broken necks or spines Hmm

@SickAndTiredAgain what would "decrease the inconvenience" is to forward face, but I wouldn't do that.
Ultimately, it's up to the individual. There's no law against forward facing. I wouldn't do it under any circumstances, but that's my choice.

How is it going? I hope you found a solution!

I'd face him forward, personally. Feeling sick all the time is miserable and debilitating.

Use the safest seat you can. We had one of the Cybex ones with the impact shield. DS had been VERY prone to sickness but facing forward he's been okay except on really twisty rural roads.
