Wedding breakfast- choice of meal?

Hey everyone.
Currently in talks with our catering company.... who are suggesting we give people the option to pick from a few starters/ mains & pudding.
They charge an extra £5 for that.
However every wedding we have attended we just got given one option and we had no issues with that.
My plan is to pick a set menu & a vegan option for our vegetarian/ vegan friends.
AIBU towards our guests? Should we offer them the option to choose what they want to eat? Our caterer wants a reply by tonight and I'm questioning myself now
TIA x

It does work out as a lot but it is nice for people to have some choice.

HoldingTheDoor · 22/01/2022 13:43

Personally I've never attended a wedding where there wasn't a choice. I'd prefer to offer my guests options, assuming that it's financially feasible to do so.

Newmumatlast · 22/01/2022 13:43

Just do a set menu. Never been to a wedding with a choice. Only one I know like it was my friend's sister's wedding which I didnt go to but they only had free choice as they got married at a registry office then went to a pub for pub grub and ordered what they wanted when there

Dogshitduty · 22/01/2022 13:44

Just do a set menu. People aren't arsed about what they get from experience, if they don't like it.. they can get a chippy on the way home!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 22/01/2022 13:45

I don't think there's anything wrong with a set menu, but if you're vegetarian it can be really annoying to have to eat a more restrictive vegan meal. Can't you do meat/vegetarian/vegan?

Chely · 22/01/2022 13:45

Nope. We had 1 set meal and people had to lump it or leave it.

Womencanlift · 22/01/2022 13:45

I have always been provided with a choice at weddings. Usually a fish and meat option. I thought that was the standard.

Because of my experience I would be a bit Hmm if I didn’t get a choice and it was basically this or nothing.

Brunonononooo · 22/01/2022 13:45

I think it’s nice to hair a choice but personally I wouldn’t do that. I certainly wouldn’t expect it at any wedding! Obviously some people will have dietary requirements and they can be catered for but I don’t think many people expect a choice really.

Caughtavibe · 22/01/2022 13:46

Set menu is fine.

I’ve only been to one wedding where there was a choice.
One wedding I went to there was no choice and they served me lamb. I’m vegetarian!

SummerHouse · 22/01/2022 13:47

What's your set menu? The vegan option is a choice in itself. I think you should save all those fivers.

TheFuckingDogs · 22/01/2022 13:47

Set menu fine however definitely need an option for veggies. It’s rubbish having to eat vegan food because you’re vegetarian

sunflowerdaisyrose · 22/01/2022 13:48

I've been to loads of weddings and can only recall two I had a choice, plus a few with buffets. I wouldn't offer a choice.

RoseAndRose · 22/01/2022 13:48

I would have three choices - omnivore, vegetarian and vegan

2pinkginsplease · 22/01/2022 13:50

Every wedding I’ve been to there has been 2 choices for each part of the meal. I’d always offer a choice.

themosttiptoptopcat · 22/01/2022 13:50

I’ve never been to a wedding where I was offered a choice of meal - only a vegetarian option.
We got married at Christmas so our wedding breakfast was a typical ‘Christmas dinner’ with a veggie option for vegetarians.

Caramelvanillafudge · 22/01/2022 13:50

It’s interesting reading peoples thoughts, it does work out expensive but our guests are travelling, will have paid to stay overnight and will give us presents, I feel the leash we can do is give them a meal they’ll enjoy!

Honeyroar · 22/01/2022 13:50

Your caterer sounds cheeky. As long as they pre order, why should it cost another £500 for 100 people to have a choice?? I think they’re trying to bump their bill up. In this scenario I’d go with the original plan -a set meal and a veggie/vegan option (an option for each if poss)

RabitWhole · 22/01/2022 13:51

I've been to a few weddings in recent years and mostly they were set menu with a veggie option for veggies. My own wedding we did a set menu and other than one person who complained and wanted a different starter (who was known to be a PITA about everything any way) everyone was happy. It is our wedding and if the cost is going to add up then just do set menu, I think most people will be happy to be fed and watered at all. Keep in mind it is a free meal for them so if they don't like it that's unfortunate but you can't please everyone.

FreedomFaith · 22/01/2022 13:51

We went with a choice of two options for each course, but that's simply because we both wanted our favourite meals for our first meal together and they were both completely different meals. Grin There is a veggie option though for others.

Travis1 · 22/01/2022 13:52

We had two options plus a veggie option. Last wedding I was at had 3 options. All the hotels I’ve worked in normally had options. I’d be a bit 🤔 if no option is given but then I’m quite fussy. I’d just end up leaving early to get food on the way home

Pleaseuniverseplease · 22/01/2022 13:52

I'd ask to have a choice of two starters, two mains, two deserts plus the vegan option.
That way you are providing an alternative for the vast majority (probably) of guests but I don't think several options is needed and surely they won't charge £5 per head extra for that.
I'd not pay an extra £5 for unlimited choice.

Mosaic123 · 22/01/2022 13:52

In my culture we ask on the invitation. When you accept the invitation it asks if you want vegetarian/GF/no fish.
Much less waste as meals are pre ordered. I like knowing roughly what I'm getting for my meal at a wedding.

maddiemookins16mum · 22/01/2022 13:56

Stick to a set menu and make your starter veggie (people will be hungry and eat it regardless of if they are veggie or not.

BoodleBug51 · 22/01/2022 13:56

As a vegetarian, I hate eating out and there's only a vegan choice available. Vegan is a very restrictive diet...........
