To think Adele’s been shockingly unprofessional?

Adele was due to start a Las Vegas residency at Caesar’s Palace this weekend and cancelled the entire thing less than 24 hours ahead of time, saying they weren’t ready for a number of different reasons.

FIL had bought tickets to the opening night for himself and MIL as a 40th wedding anniversary present, they had pretty much just checked into their hotel when she announced it wasn’t going ahead, and the cost of that and their flights is now money down the drain. DH and I and BIL and SIL were planning on taking them away for a family weekend at Easter but have instead offered to pay for travel and accommodation when (if?) it gets rescheduled.

I get that covid is fucking a lot of things up for a lot of people, but surely they could have faced reality a bit sooner? Even one more day’s notice would have saved so many people taking flights and checking into hotel rooms that they could have rebooked or been refunded for.

@100problems

I don't believe for a second Covid would have prevented Caesar's staging Adele. Not only are they a massive organisation, more than capable of sorting production issues, but they've hosted some rather big names in the past who pretty much knock Adele from Tottenham into perspective:

Frank Sinatraa_, Reba McEntire and Brooks & Dunn, Sammy Davis Jr., Ella Fitzgerald, Teresa Teng, Count Basie, Dean Martin, Rod Stewart, Stevie Nicks, The Moody Blues, Celine Dion, Ike & Tina Turner, Shania Twain, Bette Midler, Cher, Elton John, Liberace, Diana Ross, Liza Minnelli, Julio Iglesias, Ann-Margret, Tony Bennett, Harry Belafonte, Lena Horne, Judy Garland, Gloria Estefan, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Matt Goss and Deana Martin.

I read that list and thought Matt Goss? Matt Goss from Bros? Had no idea he’d done a Vegas residency and then googled and saw it ran for ten years and is down in history as one of the best ever! Every day is a school day. I’d no idea he’d done anything since about 1989.
Jobseeker19 · 22/01/2022 21:07

She could stand on the stage with a mic and sing, no theatrics, and everyone would've been happy. Why didn't she just do that?

GellerYeller · 22/01/2022 21:08

The venue holds over 4000 people. Even at an average £1000 per person on hotels and flights -that's a huge sum- I can't see her chipping in. It sets a precedent if it happens again in future. Nice thought but it's not going to happen.

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/01/2022 21:42

Cant stand her now.

She insists that she is just a normal dahn to urf gurl in I? and then pulls this diva type crap.

What she doesnt seem to realise is that the biggest stars in terms of following and live perfomance sell outs are not neccesarily the ones that sell the most records but the ones who treat their fans properly and are professional.

Throwing a hissy and cancelling at the last minute is guaranteed to lose her fans and income.

@Coconuttts

TBH, I was quite stunned at the adulation she received for "putting her own happiness ahead of her child"....I get that relationships break down, but to go around saying it in this way - just came across as really selfish to me. For that poor kid, everyone the world over knows EVERYTHING about that break up now, including she made herself miserable trying to make it work for her son. That is a lot to put on a kid.
@Coconuttts agree with this. She's being literally celebrated by some people for divorcing and breaking up her family in that manner. It's very weird. On top of that she's seems to be going downhill since she divorced so it doesn't seem to have even done her any good...
HelloFrostyMorning · 22/01/2022 21:59

I think Adele has always seemed like an OK sort, very down to earth and affable - but I do wonder (as a pp said) if she s believing her own hype now. She is coming across as a massive drama queen now, and although she is talented and quite good, she is overrated. That luvvie ITV 'Audience with Adele' show was pretty nauseating.

When she made her comeback last year with her album '30' she was treated like a God. She is decent and her songs are OK, (although they're quite dreary and samey, and very few are upbeat and actually very good.) But she is not even in the top 10 best female singers of all time IMO. And she is also not very professional...

I also wonder if there's more to it. Someone mentioned poor Vegas ticket sales (on twitter) and I wonder if the Tottenham lass has bit off more than she can chew and tried to rise too far above her station.

As I said earlier though, I can't get angry or upset for the 'poor people' who have lost money. Obviously got more money than sense to spend two to three thousand pounds on a naffing concert ticket. I mean WTAF are they charging THAT much for? Just because it's coming from America's version of Blackpool? Confused Fuck that! i would not have gone to see her in BlackVegasPool, if the tickets were a fiver!

As also, as I said earlier, anyone who can afford three grand for a concert ticket can afford to lose five to seven hundred pounds for the flight and hotel. That's the risk you take with concerts, they can be cancelled, especially with covid about STILL.

That's why I don't feel sorry for people who booked holidays and they got cancelled and they lost 1 or 2 thousand pounds or so. We are STILL in the biggest pandemic in anyone's living memory, and people are acting like covid never happened. Fine, go ahead, but don't cry off when things go tits up like this, and you lose money. That's the risk you take.

Her and Coldplay fascinate me. Mediocre singers with mediocre songs but still doing so well.

I know right. And the dreary and tedious Katie Melua. Hyped to fuckery in the noughties, and sold oodles of albums, yet I don't know, and never HAVE known - a single soul who likes her or listens to her dirge music.

And, she was still a chaaaaaaaaaald. Grin

queenofarles · 22/01/2022 22:38

I thought that there would be extra precautions taken by everyone involved to not get COVID and risk the shows getting canceled , so Adele saying this is exactly what happened is quite shocking? It just doesn’t make any sense.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/01/2022 22:44

Used to work as a tech/stage manager when not gigging myself.

My money's on the thing not being 'ready' being her. Which means a whole bunch of people will have lost significant income just when opportunities are so reduced, they will be unlikely to find anything of a par.

It probably doesn't even show

anotheronenow · 22/01/2022 22:49

I feel mean saying this but she lost me as a fan after thanking Oprah for the safe space to tell her truth thing. Wtf? Multimillionaire Adele has divorce snd lives cordially over the road from ex?

This canceling the whole thing is more of the wembley and blackpool crap. And the cringey crying video -- pls.

Wish OP had done a poll.

Uk press harder than the US press (more realistic).

Her, Coldplay, Katie Melua....all names mentioned in the thread

All the musical equivelant of beige food.

Music for people who dont actually like music

DrSbaitso · 22/01/2022 23:01

Katie Melua is still around?

Wouldn't notice if she were, I guess. Musical white noise. Musical magnolia walls.

100problems · 22/01/2022 23:07

@CovidCorvid I can't answer, I can't answer that but I guess you can be famous even if you're not in the papers Smile

Hahaha! That's so funny. I love KM she is actually much more of an artist then many others. She has an amazing voice and is very expressive but it's subtle, I say this as a musician who lives and breathes music.
couldhavenotcouldof22 · 23/01/2022 00:00

Her music is shite. I'd bleedin pay to not go tone of her concerts.

BorderlineHappy · 23/01/2022 00:19

I don't buy it.
She's in the one place where putting on a show is their business. Also she's not known for her extravagant shows.

She's the one who was supposed to sing Like A Prayer with Madonna on the Superbowl.
She couldnt do it because of her voice.

NoCaffeine · 23/01/2022 00:20

Having read the article about the facetime calls from the pop-up shop and "encouraging" her fans to buy expensive merchandise I am disgusted by her. Very poor behaviour. Nobody wants to spend £60 on a hoodie from a show that never happened!

ArcheryAnnie · 23/01/2022 00:38

On the "Diva" thing - she turned up, without fanfare, a number of times to one of the primary schools most affected by the Grenfell disaster, and just sat and listened to the children singing, no diva behaviour on show anywhere, just someone who really understood the situation these kids were in. This is the sort of school that doesn't have "connections", where most of the kids are on FSM, and who don't normally get anyone outside the school giving any sort of shit about them It was a big deal to these kids, at one of the most traumatising times of their lives. Whatever the state of her Vegas show, I will always, always love her for that.
