Man cleaner in women changing rooms

Globaluser · 22/01/2022 08:17

So I moved to Europe a year ago nearly and just recently started coming to the gym.

In this gym there were no notices up to state there’s both male and female cleaners. So I was caught kinda off guard when I walked out the shower and came across a man mopping the floors.

So I’m wondering since I didn’t really go to any u.k gyms. Is this actually normal?

I mean for me that means I will be showering at home from now on, as I see a difference between women seeing me naked and a man seeing me naked.
So I just wanted to ask how many of you would mind and how many of you have come across a male cleaner in a womens changing room in the u.k.
Thank you ☺️
@WomanStanleyWoman you imply that communal showers are equally a problem for men. You’re wrong. The younger men stand there grinning and covertly watching the women wash. They seem quite happy and occasionally have erections, it’s grim. The more mature men turn towards the wall, pull their trunks away slightly from their bodies, and allow the shower to cascade in to clean them. Both groups look comfortable to me and certainly this is completely different to having filthy chemical pool water move in and out of the vagina during swimming and then having no way to clean it straight after, particularly as the shower points down not up: again fine for men less useful for women for cleaning genitals. Why are you so keen to say the male experience is just the same as the female experience, in a situation when the completely different biology is so relevant?

No need to reply, I won’t be bothering to check back, if you can’t grasp this very simple issue I can’t imagine we have much to say to each other.
I’ll decide whether I reply or not, thanks very much. I was responding to the point that communal showers are ‘fine for men’. I made it clear I think they’re a bad idea all round.

You’re right about one thing, though. I can’t imagine we’d have much to say to each other.

MananaTomorrow · 22/01/2022 13:34

The thing is, men are a risk to women, whenever women are.

So unless you decide hat women should live a aggregate life away from men, there will always be a risk.
If we are living together, then women need to make a risk assessment of how dangerous the situation is. That assessment will be different from one person to the next.

@Globaluser I’m not sure why you are still posting.This thread is clearly triggering for you (and Tbf, as it often happens, some posters are obnoxious). I’d step put leave people have a chat together.

JigglyPiggly · 22/01/2022 13:34

@Globaluser

Is this good enough for you?
Nope

As this is sexual harassment from other people at the gym

Christ alive

MananaTomorrow · 22/01/2022 13:35

@Globaluser

Is this good enough for you?
Sexual harassment at the gym doesn’t mean it’s the cleaners though. More likely to be other users who seem to think that any woman around is fair play…..
JigglyPiggly · 22/01/2022 13:35
@JigglyPiggly is very much under the impression everything is reported and everything is circulated in the news 😂

You really shouldn’t be so naive.
If it was such an evident risk there would be one report surely

One single report

But no

JigglyPiggly · 22/01/2022 13:36

@MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor

I'll be waiting for this proof it's such a real life concern

There's plenty of evidence of men in their work, accessing women's spaces deliberately. There's plenty of evidence of men, not in their work, accessing women's spaces deliberately.

Do you think male cleaners who clean changing rooms in gyms are a special kind of male that wouldn't do this?

Do you think your children are special kind of children who wouldn't kill their parents

You see how silly your argument sounds right

Tbh I'm concerned you don't

They walk among us

Mo1911 · 22/01/2022 13:37

@girlmom21

Why don't you just wrap yourself in a towel when you get out the shower if you don't want him to see you naked?
Completely agree. I wouldn't be wandering around starkers no matter what the gender of the cleaner is. Grab a towel if you're not comfy, I 's not something that's a big problem.
MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor · 22/01/2022 13:38

It's a totally bizarre attempt at a gotcha anyway. Clearly there's stacks of evidence of men doing whatever it takes to access women when they are vulnerable in toilets and changing rooms. Actions by both employees and non employees. This is why space has always been segregated. But this strawman is set up where it's never happened by a male cleaner in a gym. But it has happened by a male cleaner in other settings. And there are plenty of incidents of males in gyms doing this kind of stuff. Just look at the WiSpa incident. But male cleaners who work in gyms are a special kind of male who wouldn't do this. For some totally bizarre illogical reason.

Iorderedyouapancake · 22/01/2022 13:41

This thread is weird- I have been going to the gym, showering and getting dressed every day before work for over 10 years now, in multiple different gyms in different locations - I have never ever encountered a male cleaner in the female changing rooms?! On extremely rare occasions where a man required access eg a plumber as in the above scenario a female member of staff would come in at least 10 minutes beforehand to warn everyone and give them a chance to get dressed. Very intrigued to know which gyms those who think it’s entirely normal to have male cleaners in female changing rooms attend! And for the posters who think no one is ever anything other than fully covered in the changing room- you’re a better woman than me if you can regularly put a bra on under a towel without the occasional slip! Very few people walk around starkers but most people will end up with a bit of incidental flashing as they get dressed in my experience

WomanStanleyWoman · 22/01/2022 13:41

If gyms, pools etc had to employ 2 cleaners, one of each sex, the cleaning bill would double.

Where are all these tiny gyms and pools that only require one cleaner?

MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor · 22/01/2022 13:41

Do you think your children are special kind of children who wouldn't kill their parents

I would like to think not. But someone out there is going to be that parent.

You see how silly your argument sounds right

I can see how desperate you sound to normalise men being in spaces where women undress. And dismissing their concerns

Tbh I'm concerned you don't
I think your attitude is concerning. Minimising safeguarding is never a good look.

They walk among us

Sadly you do. Women would be much safer if people like you didnt.

grey12 · 22/01/2022 13:42

@girlmom21

Why don't you just wrap yourself in a towel when you get out the shower if you don't want him to see you naked?
Still don't want a strange man to see me coming out of the shower in just a towel Hmm
grey12 · 22/01/2022 13:43

I have only seen in toilets with cubicles and most of the times they have announced themselves

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 22/01/2022 13:46

@Globaluser you can feel how you like. Doesn't mean I have to worry, I would think the chances of being assaulted in the gym changing room by someone who works there are quite rare

Not something I'm going to waste my time worrying about for myself

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 22/01/2022 13:48

And I doubt very much all those serial harassment claims are towards the staff

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 22/01/2022 13:48

Sexual

Justleaveitblankthen · 22/01/2022 13:48

This is not normal at all in my Gym! I know it is the case in my town's public toilets though, but no, it is not normal everywhere.

To the PPS telling you to use a towel..you would still have to drop it to get changed properly in the communal area.

Struggling under a beach towel is not cricket when you pay a King's ransom in monthly fees Hmm

MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor · 22/01/2022 13:50

@EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall

And I doubt very much all those serial harassment claims are towards the staff
Because employed males are a special safe kind of male right?
MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor · 22/01/2022 13:51

Struggling under a beach towel is not cricket when you pay a King's ransom in monthly fees

Too fucking right.

Or is it a case of pay up and shut up ladies.

LondonQueen · 22/01/2022 13:53

Very normal in the U.K., surely you should wrap up in a towel? I'm sure other women don't want to see you walking round with everything hanging out either.

CounsellorTroi · 22/01/2022 13:56

I am surprised at the comments on here given that the Mumsnet prevailing view seems to be that transwomen with penises shouldn’t be allowed in female changing rooms.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 22/01/2022 14:00

@MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor because I'd think most sex offenders don't want to get caught so aren't likely to be waiting around trying to catch some women on her own in a changing room at their place of work

Not when they could just follow someone into a public toilet or somewhere with more chance of them getting away with it

MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor · 22/01/2022 14:05

most sex offenders don't want to get caught so aren't likely to be waiting around trying to catch some women on her own in a changing room at their place of work

And these same men don't put cameras up in these spaces that they have easy access to, for their own enjoyment right.
Plenty of men have accessed jobs in order to target women and children. Shop assistants, teachers, taxi drivers, the church, the list is endless.

But seemingly male cleaners in the gym don't do anything like this.

MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor · 22/01/2022 14:08

After all, this man was simply doing his job

Globaluser · 22/01/2022 14:19

@CounsellorTroi quite right.
