Man cleaner in women changing rooms

Globaluser · 22/01/2022 08:17

So I moved to Europe a year ago nearly and just recently started coming to the gym.

In this gym there were no notices up to state there’s both male and female cleaners. So I was caught kinda off guard when I walked out the shower and came across a man mopping the floors.

So I’m wondering since I didn’t really go to any u.k gyms. Is this actually normal?

I mean for me that means I will be showering at home from now on, as I see a difference between women seeing me naked and a man seeing me naked.
So I just wanted to ask how many of you would mind and how many of you have come across a male cleaner in a womens changing room in the u.k.
Thank you ☺️

My gym rely on the gym staff cleaning. All males. I think it puts them in a vulnerable position, they could be accused of anything
It's a bad idea around

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 22/01/2022 14:31

I dont really understand why there is a need to have a victim of a male cleaner in the gym

The issue more seems to be that OP wasn’t advised that there MAY be a cleaner

Female victims of male violence or religious women etc shouldn’t be confronted with a male when they are partially dressed or naked UNLESS the have been warned it MIGHT happen and they can then make an informed decision

Surely it's common sense that the gym needs cleaning?

Surely it’s common sense to put a sign on the door saying ‘this changing room/toilet is cleaned by male and females’ like ive seen in every gym and toilet that i think ive ever been in

Obviously places need cleaning but not necessarily at which time or by whom

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 22/01/2022 14:46

🤣 maybe you should just stay in your house then . Seems its not safe anywhere.

Personally I'm not going to spend time worrying that the gym cleaner is lying in wait to attack me or that someone could possibly have put cameras in the changing rooms

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 22/01/2022 14:48

I should obviously have typed MAY be a male cleaner

It was obviously an error and I thought equally as obvious that i was talking about male cleaner as thats the entire point of the thread

Beebopbopbopbopbop · 22/01/2022 14:50

I don’t think it is normal actually. In a toilet yes. In a changing room - I’ve never seen a male cleaner.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 22/01/2022 14:57

Maybe just email the gym and ask them to put signs up

Chickychoccyegg · 22/01/2022 15:08

Any gym I've used has been a wide open plan changing area, one for women, one for men, with maybe 1 or 2 cubicles, ive never heard of a male cleaner going into this kind of space, its completely inappropriate, a male cleaner going into a female toilet is completely different to going into a large open plan changing area.
I can only imagine a lot of posters are thinking its cubicles rather than open plan.

Beebopbopbopbopbop · 22/01/2022 15:16

@Chickychoccyegg agree. My (fucking extortionate) gym is open plan. There are about four cubicles scattered around and it’s very normal for most people to at some point be naked.

I don’t think it’s ok for male cleaners to enter that sort of environment to be honest. And have never seen it happen

JigglyPiggly · 22/01/2022 15:38

@CounsellorTroi

I am surprised at the comments on here given that the Mumsnet prevailing view seems to be that transwomen with penises shouldn’t be allowed in female changing rooms.
Those sensitive souls who are funny about this are most likely also the same type of person who gets annoyed with trans women entering female spaces

Thankfully we aren't all like that on here

JigglyPiggly · 22/01/2022 15:39

@MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor

Do you think your children are special kind of children who wouldn't kill their parents

I would like to think not. But someone out there is going to be that parent.

You see how silly your argument sounds right

I can see how desperate you sound to normalise men being in spaces where women undress. And dismissing their concerns

Tbh I'm concerned you don't
I think your attitude is concerning. Minimising safeguarding is never a good look.

They walk among us

Sadly you do. Women would be much safer if people like you didnt.

I'm not normalising anything

It's already normalised

You are the outlier here

MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor · 22/01/2022 15:43

Interesting response. So rather than ensuring women are safe, and minimising the distress caused to women by cameras, you think women should just stay at home.

Enablers gonna enable I guess ✅

MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor · 22/01/2022 15:44

You are the outlier here

Except that I'm not. Nice try. But it's not going to wash.

I think it was sarcasm but are you saying only women should be allowed to clean womens changing rooms, showers, hospital wards?

That's discrimination against men and forces women into roles that fit the gender-stereotype we try so hard to fight against.

JigglyPiggly · 22/01/2022 15:51

You are

That's a fact

If you were the majority gyms wouldn't have male cleaners, as they'd be suffering financially due to not offering a solution that fits the needs of the many.

I see you're now going on about cameras, you need to seek some therapy. It's not normal to be this worried about a man putting a camera in a changing room, or doing his job cleaning up. I feel sorry for you having to live with such high levels of fear

Baystard · 22/01/2022 15:52

You might have a towel wrapped around you but that is not the same thing as 'wearing' a towel. I come out of the gym shower cubicle needing to use my hand to ensure my towel definitely up, and if I have a lower locker need to bend down carefully so I'm not flashing my arse when getting my clothes out. It's really in no way comparable to being dressed.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 22/01/2022 15:58

Why is not being frightened of men cleaning a gym changing room being an enabler Confused or spending my life worrying one may ne lurking around with a camera. Ots not healthy

We are in a pandemic , maybe there was no women cleaner due to staff shortages.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 22/01/2022 16:00

And no, I think you should stay at home not most women.

MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor · 22/01/2022 16:11

I think we've hit bingo on the enablers checklist. ✅✅

Globaluser · 22/01/2022 16:13

@MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor yes, I beleive that is what’s happening as well.

Iorderedyouapancake · 22/01/2022 16:19

I’m beginning to think many of the people posting on this thread have never been to a gym. The vast majority of gyms have open plan changing, not cubicles, and most women will be briefly exposed at various points while getting dressed after a shower- it’s easy to put knickers on under a towel without showing anything but a bra or a pair of tights not so much! Of course it’s inappropriate to have a male cleaner in a space where women are at times nude (and vice versa). It is absolutely not normal for gyms to have male cleaners in the women’s open plan changing room during opening hours.

No youre not the outlier 😀

Every gym ive ever been to has said they have male cleaners if appropriate…notice on the door or in the room itself

Beebopbopbopbopbop · 22/01/2022 16:32

I agree Lorded. The only place I can think of with full cubicles is the local leisure centre.

UsernameNotAvailableHmm · 22/01/2022 16:48

Hello OP, I'm with you on this completely.
Have never seen a male cleaner in a female changing room and would be very unhappy about it if I did.
Not necessarily because I'd fear being attacked, but just the fact that the cleaner could see me.

Having read through (more or less) all the posts here, a lot of posters are in agreement with you.

I get the impression some, just a few, are goading and provoking others and enjoying their reactions.

I wouldn't want to meet them in any changing room either that's for sure!
