www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10419543/Christian-couple-ban-gay-man-partner-buying-dream-650-000-sexuality.html

A church-going wife who banned a gay man and his ITV producer partner from buying her £650,000 Surrey home has hit back in the row and insisted they are just sticking to their beliefs.

Luke Whitehouse and Lachlan Mantell were stunned when they were told that they could not buy the three-bedroom home because the Christian owners didn't want to sell to 'two men in a partnership.'

Honestly, they should be ashamed of that text. I hope no estate agent will work with them ever again.

Yanbu.

But vendors often choose their buyers. Apparently some only sell to 'locals' which can be a euphemism for 'white'.

We found out after many years in our home, that the previous owners turned down a higher offer because they didn't want to sell to developers.

LadyNell · 20/01/2022 20:29

Don't agree with it but they are entitled to their opinion

‘ It's difficult for some people to keep up with what is acceptable in "modern society"’

Really? REALLY? These arseholes Are in their 30s, not their 80s. They are ‘modern society’ aren’t they?
Except in their version of modern society you get to make nasty comments to people who have the audacity to love someone of the same sex and not be ashamed of it.

Pinkandpurplehairedlady · 20/01/2022 20:30

Another Christian here and I’m ashamed that are people who would use the bible like that. Jesus was about love and besides as someone else said it’s none of my business what two consenting adults chose to do.

@Omicrone

Nah, fuck them. They’re cunts.

Just as there’s nothing illegal about refusing to sell your house to a gay couple, there’s no law against splashing their photos, names, addresses and pictures of their cunt’s nest across the internet.

We don't even know for sure that the wife was involved. It was the husband messaging the blokes, and then when he was contacted by the Mail he said 'I'll have to speak to my wife'. And now a full on close up photo and personal details including her employment history is in a national newspaper.

I totally disagree with these people of course, i don't understand what they think would happen if a gay couple bought their house, but they weren't being violent against that couple, or publicly inciting hatred, it was a private message stating their position.

Hey ho. You bend over backwards to stick up for this pair of bigots. Decent people (who you’ll notice are the large majority here) will continue to call them out.

Giving the wife the benefit of the doubt, if she doesn’t want to be married to a crushing homophobe, she can leave. I can’t imagine that this is the first time her husband’s hate-filled shit has manifested

onlychildhamster · 20/01/2022 20:32

I am not really shocked tbh. I have been refused service at a pub in bucks cos we are a mixed couple. Surrey doesn't strike me as the friendliest place for a gay couple.

People will tell me that not everyone in Surrey would be like that and that is obvious;but the chance of such incidents is much higher in non diverse areas...it's like a filter; if you were intolerant, you wouldn't want to live in a place that is 60% non white, or where there are gay couples kissing in the street and therefore it makes sense to house search in such places if you are not the standard white heterosexual couple..it's why there are so many threads on Mumsnet that go 'please find me a diverse town/suburb outside London with good schools and greenery!' there is a reason; if the world wasn't like that, we would all be able to live anywhere we like, irregardless of skin colour, sexual orientation, religion etc.

Tbsp, I don’t think any serious person is suggesting that the sellers have done anything illegal. The point is that it’s just appallingly wrong. The law doesn’t, and should never, define the parameters of morality.

And there’s a huge moral difference between refusing to sell to developers, and refusing to deal with gay people

Rockdown2020 · 20/01/2022 20:37

If only we regulated estate agents so they were obliged not to accept those who do not want to sell to people on the grounds of what is termed a protected characteristic in the 2010 Equalities Act.

I thought we'd moved away from 'no dogs, no blacks, no Irish'.

^ this. Why even have laws to protect people if we aren’t able to enforce them.

Cultish · 20/01/2022 20:39

It's in the public interest to take this to the papers, sell his story, shame someone else for holding different values, ( which are also a protected belief?), Invite a pile on and do their best to make sure they can't sell the house to anyone else? Like hell it is. Typical trial by public shaming behaviour that makes the world such a shit place. They both have different views and values. So what. Find another house. Move on.

Religious belief is also a protected characteristic in the EA🤷‍♀️
Isaw3ships · 20/01/2022 20:41

I’m glad they went public, it’s the only way to deal with this insidious bigotry.

Omicrone · 20/01/2022 20:43

I highly doubt that publishing their details and effectively organising a pile on of these people, which will inevitably lead to the usual death threats etc against them, is going to change theirs, or any other homophobes, views on gay people.

It's not how you make change.

SavBbunny · 20/01/2022 20:44

Another Christian here. Married to a black man with a trans child. We have been refused property in the past. I get angry, my husband prefers not to give them our money.
And a final point without gay clergy there would be a lot of parish vacancies!

FitAt50 · 20/01/2022 20:45

Shocked that 21% of mumsnetter's agree with the homophobic couple.

Fair enough. But you can't expect everyone to keep changing their opinion according to what's "deemed acceptable to modern society " . Regardless as to what year it is people always live in modern society. People who lived in 1865 also lived in modern society. Who decides what's acceptable?
CorneliusVetch · 20/01/2022 20:49

I am disgusted by the behaviour of the couple. Gay people should be able to go about their lives in society without having to fear at any given moment that they won’t be welcome somewhere because of their sexuality.

This couple can privately hold whatever views they want about homosexuality; the issues is acting in those views in this way.

onlychildhamster · 20/01/2022 20:49

@Omicrone there are a few sects of born again Christianity where they don't believe interracial marriage is wrong. Is it ok to refuse to sell properties to interracial couples or even people of mixed heritage? Where do we draw the line.

BIWI · 20/01/2022 20:52

21%, so 84 people, voted that YABU. Who are these bigots? None of whom have come on to the thread to say why they voted that way.

Isaw3ships · 20/01/2022 20:53

Telling two people they can’t buy a house because they are a same-sexual couple is not acceptable.
So if these bigots want to do that, and then defend their position while using offensive language from a ‘holy’ book then they may have to face consequences.
I think they’re batshit crazy for believing in fairy stories but I wouldn’t refuse to sell my house to them because they believe that there’s a man with a big beard controlling the universe.

sadpapercourtesan · 20/01/2022 20:55

21% doesn't surprise me, sadly. There are still a LOT of homophobes out there, particularly among the fervently religious. Unsurprising that they don't have the chutzpah to come and argue the toss.

It's not acceptable to talk about religious people in that way either.
itsgettingweird · 20/01/2022 20:57

They don't want their house anymore.

But are cuntish enough to think it's ok to dictate who can have it or not.

I hope no one wants it after this.

CorneliusVetch · 20/01/2022 20:59
